Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Thank You DCM For Letting Me Know You Know How To Sign "Thank You"

I am definitely going to make a policy and/or put up a sign about ending phone conversations before entering to pick up your child! This is one of my biggest pet peeves!

Dcm rarely picks up anymore, but when she does she is always on her phone. She p/u on Fri and of course was on her phone-we could see her in her car in the driveway. She walks in still on her phone, mouths sorry to me and goes about getting her ds and puts his coat on, still on the phone. I did not try to be quiet, usually I do, but I get so annoyed when this happens now. She looks at me again and takes the note I left about needing diapers and extra clothes and signs, yes signs the words "thank you" and taps the note with her hand and walks out the door!
Well, I'm surely glad she knows how to sign "thank you".

Another dcp was picking up and just stared at her and commented on how rude dcm was.

AND guess who didn't bring diapers....When I texted her about the diapers this morning, I so wanted to say "well maybe if you weren't on your freaking phone every time you pick up, you may remember things" but I didn't.

I have 2 dcm's that pull up into my driveway and talk on their cell phone for 10 to 15 minutes. My house is all windows so it is hard to keep the kids from looking out the windows at pick up time. I used to try to distract the kids and sooth them when they cried for their chatty moms. Now I dress the kids in their coats and open my door and wave for mom.

If this is something that really bothers you, I think it warrants a face to face discussion addressing it.

I think you should contact DCM and let her know that often times there are things that YOU need to discuss with her or let her know and that being on the phone while picking up or dropping off her child is really rude and not something that you want to allow in your business.

Tell her that you would appreciate it if she hung up BEFORE entering your home.

Sometimes these types of behaviors simply need to be addressed and speaking up outloud immediately to the offender is required.

I find cell phones to be a wonderful intervention that greatly benefits society but at a BIG cost. We each need to decide how and when we will allow this to affect (or not affect) us.

So true! I need to just muster up the courage to talk to her about it. I'm getting better at telling parents things I'm uncomfortable talking to them about, but it's been a process for me.

It's just this one dcm and it seems like it's every time she picks up, which isn't very often. And sometimes when dcd picks up, he has his bluetooth on and guess who's on the other end...I can sometimes hear her!

Am I the only one who would be glad she was not talking to ME?

I would get the kids ready and interrupt her conversation. "Excuse me, dcm I wrote you a note but wanted to make sure I told you. We need diapers for tomorrow. *sign thank you*!"

Today I suddenly appreciated it. I will happily hand over the child w minimal words now. Quick exchange!

my kid attends a center that also houses a head start, pre-K, and some private therapy- but there are notes everywhere that parents are not allowed on their phones during pick up. There's a big one on the door and then all through the building. I think it's great!

Haha. She has done this before and then will call me later to ask about his day or something. Now, I let it go to voicemail.

Yeah, when I drop my kiddos off at daycare in the mornings I am always glad when my provider is on the phone. Then i dont have to talk to her.

I couldnt imagine bringing my kids to someone who is glad she doesnt have to talk to me.

Ahh don't take it personally. I have had hundreds of thousands of arrivals and departures over a twenty year career. Yours is just one more. It's special to you but to us it's a task. It's not an unbearable task. Just a task we have done thousands of times. If we don't have anything important to ask or tell it is easier if you drop and run or pick up and run.

Obviously this dcm has little respect for her provider, since talking to her about her child is NOT her priority.

I also like kids. The parents? Not so much. Talking to parents exhausts me, in all honesty. Most of it has to be redirected back to their child. I hear way too much personal stuff. Way too much about their day. It's really NOT personal.

This is one of the reasons why I envy teachers. Less parent interaction. Most of what I say goes in one ear and out the other anyway. I dislike wasting my time/energy. Last year our local schools locked down so parents can't even walk to the classrooms to drop off and pickup their children. I know several teachers (friends, family and a former dcm) they ALL love it. Less conferences.

I would have picked up my phone & called her (while she was on the phone) & reminded her she needed to bring diapers..., tell her to have a nice day too!
