A parent brings in her child to your classroom most mornings with a diaper that has not been changed, has not been fed breakfast, and usually is still in her pajamas. The parent is always in a rush and hands her daughter to you or another staff person. Mom comments that she is late and leaves quickly, often without saying goodbye to her daughter or to the staff. What is the best way to get the parent to bring the child ready for the day?

Do you have anything in the contract or handbook requiring a child to be completely ready before they are brought to daycare? What is the penalty for not following the rules? You have to hold her accountable to the agreement or make new rules for her and have some sort of penalty (usually monetary) that accompanies the rule to keep them accountable. Some parents will do the least amount of work possible because they are either lazy, self centered, or trying to get the most for their money. There are a few that are just not aware that it does cause a problem in group care but many more know good and well and just don't care to change, especially if no one is stopping them.

1. Have a written, signed policy stating it is required.

2. Enforce it.
