Good morning. The mom that fights me now on everything showed up today without formula ( I ran out here) she says "oh we aren't going to do formula anymore . We are giving her milk now". In this case, do u do what the parent wants or do u go with what a doctor would suggest? I am on the fence and was wondering what you ladies would do.

I wouldn't do it without a medical reason and documentation from a doctor. I'm also curious if there's a reg that would back you up... I know there's one that specifies what we have to feed older kids so I'm sure if there's one in there that says infants must get formula or breast milk.

That's assuming you're not on the food program... If you are then 100% no way

In my daycare it's a rule that the child has to be fully switched over to milk and been drinking it solely for at least 5 days before introducing it in daycare. Allergies, intolerance... this is a good practice for any new foods, so I refuse to introduce them to the child. If the parent has switched the 10-month-old over at home over a week or two, so be it--that's not your call to make. But guarding against a bad reaction (especially if it's the first time ever on milk) is common sense for a daycare provider, especially if other kids are around. Good luck.

Nutrition "experts" say formula or breast milk for the first year. With the food program we have to have a doctor's note to give milk before 12 months.

I am on the food program, and my sponsor requires breast milk or formula until 12 months (as is recommended). I'd insist on formula, but I would be providing it myself, too. Were I you, I'd tell Mom that you will need clearance from DCK's doctor and a note to keep on file explaining the medical reason for stopping formula early.

They have been given her both at home. I have always waited until 12 month. I haven't ever had a parent switch them this early. But everything is a fight with this mom and so I'm just not sure what to do. No I am not on the food program and personally I don't feel comfortable giving her milk because I know what a doctor would say. But this mom feels like it's her choice and that's that. But I also dont want to mess the baby up by her getting milk at home and formula here.

Do some research, give her the printouts and tell her you can't/won't do something that is harmful to a child.

Nope- I would tell DCM she has to be on formula till 12 months unless she has paperwork from her Doctor saying why she should do whole milk. Too much of a chance otherwise.

It's only her choice at HER home. At YOUR home, YOUR rules apply. I would not, food program or not, give a child that age milk. I'd let Mom walk before I did. I'd never knowingly do something that was not in a child's best interests, and this is not.

Since children younger than 12 months should be getting the majority of their nutrients and calories from breast milk it formula, how does dcm plan on making up for that?

I didn't use the food program either but that doesn't mean you can't cite it. You could say that while you don't use it that you do agree with its recommendation regarding milk so your policy is no milk at your house until 12 months.

Absolutely not. Mom can take the baby back home today & bring her back w/ proper formula or breastmilk tomorrow. It's dangerous to give them cow milk before a year old. I wouldn't want the liability. Mom can go kick rocks if she doesn't like it.

Oh sweet baby Jesus, I am not sure why there are people like this who dictate that their child WILL be following an unhealthy diet without any regard to what research says or what rules might apply to others.

My own SIL is just like this and I want to smash my head against a wall every time I talk to her.
