Very close but this is how mine goes
--are you eating a granola bar?
--are you drinking water?
--are you holding the baby?
--are you feeding the baby?
My question is what do you think I am doing.

Mine is "what is that", "what are you doing" - all day long.

My answer is to point and say "toys".

Ha! My middle son could hear the cookie jar lid no matter how quiet you tried to be. I remember watching my BIL trying to replace it without being caught. Hilarious.

And yes I have had kids who narrate my life to me. It comes in handy at Christmas because the parents seem to know I like tea.

Here is my dcg

* note that this is the same conversation we have had every day this week, almost word for word.

- dcg: Is that a birdhouse?
- me: Yes
- dcg:Why is it inside?
- me: The string broke.
- dcg: Why the string broke
- me: The string was old...

You get the idea.

The problem is, EVERY conversation with this child is the same. It is like she has Pre-planned conversations in her head that need to go a certain way.

So today, when she asked 'Is that a birdhouse?', I said, 'No, it is a dog house'. She just stared at me. Her little brother said, 'Noooooo, you are just kidding!'

I ask, "Am I?" or "What AM I doing?" It seems to be infecting my 4-year-olds in a terrible way.

LOL we have nicknamed it the Captain Obvious Stage. I have survived several. Reminds me that I should enjoy that all my current ones are just babblers or one-worders for now

I have a little girl here who I actually sometimes have to avoid talking to first thing in the morning beyond, "Good Morning." From the second you talk about anything, with anyone, she is there like a steam roller, asking obvious questions and then standing there and just staring at me. and God FORBID another child gets even a second of attention. She is interrupting, steam rolling, and chatting about herself. Much like her parents!

Today, she even asked me what I was typing! Argh!!!! Leave me ALONE for 2 seconds! Play with toys and kids!!!!!!

Lord Jesus in Heaven! I have two, a boy and a girl, and it drives me up the wall.

Me sitting and cutting out paper:
Ms. Teacher are you cutting paper?
Me: You tell me.
DCK: Yes

Me pouring milk:
Ms. Teacher, are you pouring milk?
Me: You tell me.
DCK: Yes

Now do this for about six hours and you have my day. I love both of these DCKs to death. They are some of the best kids I've ever had, but this habit drives me crazy. Why do kids do this?

My niece is repeating everything these days.... but i think that comes from when she was smaller and we did that with her to confirm what some things were or what we were doing. Kind of asked ourselves for it i guess.

The obvious questions drive me batty! I vary my answer between "What AM I doing?" and "I am riding on an elephant!" The second one usually gets me "No, not an elephant! Making lunch!" And they wander away

Why is that green?
Why did you put on that sweater?

Sounds like my ex husband...

He used to drive me crazy. He constantly asked me what I was doing...yes, a grown man.

Finally one day I couldn't take it any more and was tired of trying to be so nice about the obvious. He asked me what I was doing...I said "I'm flying a kite!!! What does it look like I'm doing!"

He never asked again...

I think it has alot to do with when they are babies and their parents/ caregivers narrate everything everyone is doing. Then the child grows up thinking that it is weird if you don't narrate everything you are doing and wondering. Don't get me wrong it is a great way to teach babies vocabulary but there are some drawbacks to that as apparently everyone on here can see. I think too much focus on talking to babies is the actions and what is visual and not enough on just conversation- just talking out loud to the baby like a real person instead of patrinizing them all the time.

If parents just talk to them more and not always focus on actions (or question) so much but actual conversations (even if they are one-sided for a while) they will learn MORE vocubulary that way. Like telling them a funny story, talking about your day or your childhood memeries or even just reading; as long as the conversation is not too stress inducing. I think when you talk to them more about mental concepts than just what is visual concepts they will become deeper thinkers instead of a 'surface thinker' as my ECE teacher would call it. It will also help create a stronger bond between the child and the adult; I never heard of a strong relationship based on the fact that the sky is blue .

I think its just the kid and their own built in personality

My daughter is like this..especially during a movie...I call her 1,001...she asked me why, and i said becuase you ask 1,000 and one questions! sometimes i get annoyed but I actually dont mind answering all of her questions...i know I will miss this when she gets older....
