How many songs should a 2.5 year old be able to sing?

My 2.5 year old dcg sings all the time. I decided to try to list the ones that I know she can sing.So far, I've counted 26 songs that she can sing at least one verse by herself, and many of them she knows 2 verses. There are 4 more that she knows parts of, like Bananaphone. That's just the ones I can think of off the top of my head, I know more will turn up as I listen to her more.

Is this about average or is it unusual? She is very verbal, she carries on conversations like a school ager.

No real reason to ask, just curious.

I think that's a lot for that age. My 2.5 yr olds only know bits and pieces of a few songs....even the very verbal one!

She must be very tuned into music and quite bright. Future American Idol?

I'd say unusual! Especially if she's picking up songs she hasn't been hearing since birth like Bananaphone. (Yes, now stuck in my head...)

I have one DCG who will be 2 in May who's also exceptional when it comes to music. Her mom is a pop fan, and DCG knows all the words to Bieber's "Baby." Even the part Ludacris raps!

Not my kind of music myself, but we end up listening to that song a few times a day because I'm just in awe watching her sing it all, and in perfect pitch! Now all the kids know the words.

That is a lot of songs! Fantastic!

My 2.5-year-old DCG sang our days of the week song yesterday and it was sooo cute. She got all of the days right with her little baby voice. She attempts to sing many other songs, but this one she has down perfectly. Adorable!

Justpeachy--" (Yes, now stuck in my head...)" Sorry.

I've never heard her sing a pop song or a country song or anything adult. It's all things that she's heard here or on tv at home (like the Little Einstein's theme).

She isn't on perfect pitch, but the melody is easily recognizable. She goes up when the notes go up and down when they go down, and hits more correct notes than bad ones.

She's really smart, but this seems over the top. She just remembers everything!

that's awesome! My kids have never known that many...but then we don't sing much, so it's an environmental thing too.

My daughter began singing when she was very, very young also (before age 3) and in perfect pitch. She has an amazing voice and I've tried many times to get her to audition for American Idol (she's 22 now).

There were so many times she would be singing and I had to go see if it was her or the radio because she just sounded so good. And like your dcg, she could remember the words to soooooo many songs very young.

My other daughter (21 yo) was in band and played clarinet...she NEVER ever brought home her instrument to practice and was always in first chair and was the drum major in high school.

Where either of my daughters got their musical talent I have no idea as neither myself or their dad has it, but they both are amazing.

It sounds as though that little girl is going to musically inclined.

You know, I think it depends on how much they are exposed to singing really.

We sing the days of the week, months of they year, today is ..... everyday. Then we sing 1-2 new songs a week according to what holiday/month it might be. By the end of the month we are singing 4-8 songs. Then we sing a LETTER song every week to week 1/2. Usually the kids sing them from memory the next month but they are singing them (at home, during playtime, in the car. I love when the parents say oh, so in so was singing ...... song)

Then I either have kids CD's playing, KLOVE, or Classical music on the radio. Alot of times I will turn the STARFALL songs on and they will here those also. The other day I had one that was sing a song softly from KLOVE but it was during naptime (the station wasn't on), they were singing it from memory.

My little ones start with me between 18 months-2, so by 2.5 they have heard alot of singing/songs just from here.

That's probably it Country Kids. She's been here since she was 6 months old. I sing all the time-I'm a terrible singer, but I am always singing and humming. I guess she's just heard them enough, and has a good enough memory, that they stick.

She started playing doctor with the stuffed animals, giving them check ups. She would use a spatula from her kitchen to listen to their heart. I showed her how everyone had their own "heart song" and she caught on quickly. Now, each doll, animal (real and stuffed), and person has their own personal song. When she hears one on the radio or a cd, she stops and says "That's bears heart song".
