Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>DCP's Letting All The Air Conditioning Out

It's HOT!

As it is, my sad little air conditioning can barely keep up with the almost 100 degree weather. Even though it runs and runs all day, it just isn't cool enough for me.

During pick up and drop off, I have these dcp's who keep chatting with the door open. I have made comments before like, "come on in," or, "the air is on," but they dont seem to get that those 60 seconds they want to chat or stand in the doorway increase my home a few degrees in this 100 degree heat. Not only is it expensive, but it makes my house hot and uncomfortable.

What do I do? They never pick up or drop off at the same time, so I can't wait outside for them to arrive or pick up. I feel like I have addressed this issue politely, and I feel like people should have respect for someones home and not let all the bought air out. Suggestions?

Stop addressing it so politely as polite doesn't pay your bills.

Try saying "Hey Sally could you shut the door, the AC is on." That isn't rude at all in my opinion. It is simple and direct.

If any one gets upset that you said it then oh well because you really can't be any clearer.

I just start closing the door. Inch it closer and closer and they have no choice but to move. If they still are playing dumb, I just say, "gotta close it... the air conditioner's on." It's ignorant and disrespectful on their part NOT to come in and close it behind themselves. I can't stand when people don't THINK.

So glad I am not the only one. This erks me to no end.
I just hung a sigh on the door.

HOT OUTSIDE!
KEEP DOOR CLOSED!!
Thank you so much!

It was 90 degrees at 6 am and DCM stood in the doorway talking then DCG hugs her in the door way. Come on. You are standing there complaining about the heat with my door open.

I agree! Put a sign on the door and if they still keep it open then SPEAK UP and be direct as the other posters said. They should not be offended in my opinion.

Teach the kids and practice. Then let them set the example.

When parents come in you can cue them to go shut the door as practiced. Ask them why THEY keep the door shut at daycare....keeps the bugs out, keeps the house temp down on hot days, it's the polite thing to do at someone else's house etc.

I'll usually throw in something like it drives me nuts when my kids act like they were born in a barn and leave the door hanging open, trying to teach them all so when they go home they know better too.

Help raise a generation that knows better than some of their parents do

Good idea!

My sign in/out sheet forces the parents all the way in my door, so as soon as they are in I shut it all the way again.
My own kids also like to tell everyone that comes in our door 'Hurry before the bees come inside!', because I tell them that every time they are being slow pokes.

I was wondering if I was the only one having this issue!

I walk up behind them and shut the door for them. After a few times, they get it. It makes no sense to leave the door open while you sign out, gather your child's belongings from their cubby, help them put their backpack on, say good-bye to me, and then leave.

I have a reversible sign that a friend gave me; she got it at a craft show. One side is wintery and other is summery. It says:

I cannot afford to heat/cool **my town**
please close the door!

I want to take it back to the crafter and have 'or an energy surcharge will be added to your tuition'

Lock the door. Then when they arrive open it, let them in and shut it behind them. Tell them everyone is leaving the door open so you have to do this.

My issue is that they stand outside the door, usher the kids in but don't come in, and then want to say their goodbye's at the door, with my door wide open. Or, they knock for pick up, then the kids walk out the dor, and as I am closing it, start a conversation.

In my opinion, it is so disrespectful to go to someones house and leave the door wide open. My ac has been running all day and it's 77 degrees in the house still. I have a headache from the heat, and I am feeling so irritable right now.

It just irks me that people have no common sense or respect. Either come in and shut the door or leave. Dont have a conversation in the middle of my door.

My sign worked great. I got the school kids in on being my helpers and put the sign at the kids eye level like it was for the kids. My 2 year old that is the worst for opening the door with mom there read it to his mommy. With no prompting, we were shocked. She was so impressed because he is very young an a tad delayed. We were so excited that he read the sign. THen the other kids read the sign to every single parent that walked in. The door stayed closed.
BTW...My BTU is fine. My power bill... Not so much

I tell them: "Shut the door, you're letting all my money out! I'll have to raise the rates."

If my home were 77 degrees, I would be sweating bullets. I run around with the children far too much to keep it at 77. I'm a skinny lady that doesn't handle running around too well when it's hot.

I have ceiling fans and oscillating fans that move air around really well. Occasionally I will turn it to 75 but very rarely.
