Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Possible Daycare Mother Doing A "Tantrum"
Unregistered 07:10 PM 02-20-2014
Hello,

First I have to say I am so happy to find this forum as a new daycare owner it has been so helpful.

So a family come into the daycare for a visit and were very nice, over the phone the mother was very demanding and act as if I was her worker, she wanted to hear YES to everything she wanted. So from that moment I didn't want to accept this family not wanting more drama in the future
But then she had a big "tantrum" with cries and screams over how I couldn't take away the opportunity for her daughter to attend my daycare...and beg me to take her.... I k

How do you deal with parent who are upset at you...?
And how can I gentle say that no I do not want them to enroll their child in my care...?

I really don't want to upset her more as is a small community here and I don't want a bad reputation...

Thank you!

I always end interviews with "I will let you know after I have finished conducting interviews."

Then I send them an email saying it was very nice to meet them but the space has been filled. I ask if they would like on my waiting list.

You get to choose who you do business with. Don't let her bully you, and don't feel guilty.

I once told a woman that I didn't feel we started out on the right foot and that I didn't see that changing. Not all providers/parents are perfect for one another. Good luck with your search!

Take it from someone who has devoted YEARS to high-maintenance DCP because I have been easily manipulated by the same scenario: RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think you have to be worried about your reputation. I'm sure that others in the community know already that she is a bully. Plus you have your current happy parents who say good things. Just be professional and carry on but whatever you tell her, don't take her.

Exactly.

I have one past client that badmouths me whenever she gets the chance. I have several of her "friends" who have started here this year, so obviously her badmouthing didn't influence them because they know who she is and what she is about. I also live in a VERY small community that is slightly isolated so I understand the concern.

I always tell parents I am interviewing a number of families and will let them know which child I decide to take. Wording it that way let's the parents know they are NOT employing me. And it gives me the perfect out if I don't think they will be a good fit.

I send a very polite email telling them I enjoyed meeting etc, but that the current place has been filled.

I want parents to understand that they are applying for a place in my daycare. Not interviewing me for a job.

I had one interview for an under 2 spot ( which we all know can go very fast ) , I told the family to let me know if they were interested in the spot soon because I had another interview the next day . Mom seemed very nice but was concerned about my dogs , which is understandable .

I did not hear back from them until 2 weeks later to tell me they were taking the spot . I told them sorry it is already filled . She then began to yell and scream at me for not saving the spot for her .
