How much do you consider "reasonable" to charge for SA care during the school year? I just had someone ask my rates and then tell me that I charged way too much. Yesterday I was having a conversation with a Mom who used to do it, and she said "wow, these days people get way more than I ever charged...I only got $5 per day" and I thought, OMG!

I don't have other littles here, and I really push the fact that my focus is totally on the SA's. I provide snacks and drinks, I make sure they do ALL of their homework, and I take them to and from the bus stop daily. We do arts and crafts every week and I do parties and such for them at holidays.

In my area $10/day is the normal but I know the center that I sent my kids to preschool at (they also do childcare) charges $15/day. I know many private in-home daycares charge a little less, particularly if they watch an non-SA sibling. I charge $8/day but then the SA I watch is typically only here about 1.5 hrs/day.

I'm just going to come right out and say that I charge $16 daily. The "going rate" in my area varies wildly depending on the number of children in care and from one neighborhood to the next.

My thing is, why should I charge dirt cheap prices for SA's when they're so much work? I don't have to change diapers, but as everyone here is aware, they definitely have their own set of issues. I think my money is hard earned. It always bugs me when someone tries to undervalue the service that I provide.

My rates (monthly):

After School until 6:00 $190*
After School until 4:30 $100,*until 4:30
Before School Only $100
Before/ After until 6:00 $225/mo*

and $6/hour for anything else. I charge monthly so I always have a 30 day notice of any changes.

Also, not all kids come every day, but they have a spot available to use if they need it.

I charge $125 a week. BUT that covers all holidays, in-service days, 1/2 days etc. I think its easier to charge a flat rate than to have to add here and there on days off.

Is there anyone else like me on the forum who does SA care only? I'd like your opinions on this too.

Kathimarie, I like the idea of charging a flat rate and having it apply to days off from school as well. I'll think about that as an option (though I'll never get $125 a week).

Currently I charge $75 a week for before and after school. I charge an additional $12 a day for non school days and $7 a day for early release or late starts.

In my area it is free for kids on the free school lunch plan.

For everyone else it is $5 a day.

This is WITH teachers available for tutoring/homework help, a few huge commercial playgrounds and a healthy breakfast/afternoon snack.

It is done in the kids public schools.

I cannot compete with that, so I don't.

I charge $15 a day. That's from about 3pm until I close at 5:30pm. Inservice days and holidays are the regular daily rate.

I am strictly SA. My rates are flat rate, and the little *'s mean that minimum days are included in the price. Full days with no school, are $36 each.

Our bus picks up at 8:30 am, and drops off at 3:30 pm. So I figure 1.5 hours in the morning, and 1.5 in the afternoon. I charge more per hour because they are here less hours than the full-timers. I do $4 per hour times 3 hours per day, which is $12 per day, making it $60 per week.

I used to have a Kinder that got dropped off at 8am and I would walk her to school with my own kids at 8:45. I charged $10 per day for this with no after school care.

I would have her also for teacher inservice days and I charged the regular daily rate for those days.

I don't do SA anymore because I didn't enjoy it at all!

$75/wk for before and after which includes delayed starts and early releases. Any other time a SA is in care for more than 4 hours a day, the daily rate of $40 will apply.

Wow, I never thought about those late starts. When I lived in MN we didn't have late starts/no school due to snow, but to fog! LOL
