Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>New Section In Handbook.....Baths?
LaLa1923 07:21 AM 08-01-2013
I'm really considering making it a requirement that parents bathe their kids every night. Also, that if they have offensive orders they can be sent home. This isn't to hurt feelings but I have three kids that do not get baths every night and they reek. I cannot stand it..

Thoughts??

To be honest I don't think that is something that I would put into any policy or handbook...'

I would just have a heart to heart with the parents and let them know that the kids really need to have a bath.....

I have a section in my handbook that gives our daily schedule. Under that it says children must be brought to daycare clean, fed (if they arrive after scheduled meal time), in clean appropriate for the weather clothes and shoes that fits, in a clean diaper (if applicable) or care can not be provided for that day.

I also have that in my policies, but from what I understood, she is saying that she wants to add a section that says you need to bathe your kids daily..........

I agree. Also, docs do not recommend children with eczema get bathed daily but, surely you would bathe them before they were stinky. I would think this is more than a daily bath issue. I don't bath my kids daily and they don't come close to stinking. I would think for kids to be stinky it would have to be closer to a week without one.

I have this in mine as well. If a particular child smelled badly I would bring it up to the parents. Sometimes body odors can signal a health issue so I might approach it from the angle (even if I knew darn well the real reason) "I've noticed lately that Stevie seems to have a strange body odor. Have you noticed this at home? I am concerned that this might be caused by a health issue so I wanted to let you know. If it keeps up, I will need a doctors note saying he has been seen and evaluated and in good health."

Now this might be the kick in the pants the parents need to make sure little Stevie is getting his nightly bath, cause parents who "forget" to bathe their kids are probably not the ones who want to bring them to the doctor either.

That is something I COULDN'T put in my handbook. We are NOT allowed to dictate to parents things like that. Families all have different bathing customs/traditions and NOT all cultures believe in bathing daily.

I personally feel it would be sort of intrusive and kind of outside the boundaries of what I have a right to be involved in and not be involved in....kwim?

I guess if it were me and a family smelled badly enough that it bothered ME, I would probably just say they weren't a good fit for my program and move along....

If it were something that recently started to happen and they weren't always that way, I MIGHT talk with the family about it depending on my relationship with them.

I've had this problem before, also. When my own kids were babies/toddlers I bathed them every other day and they never smelled. So. I'm guessing by the time a little one smells badly, it's been several days since they had a bath. I've bathed DC babies myself when it is so bad no one wanted to hold them : ( I'm definetly putting something in my new handbook about kids being brought CLEAN to day care.

I had this problem with one of my dcks. She had some medical issues and had a pic line in her arm at first then her chest. She could not be submerged in water so parents had to do sponge baths. They got very lax with them and after a while dcg was showing up with ring around the collar and she got stinky. I had to have quite a few chats after I couldn't take being within a few feet of her. Its pretty bad when you have to tell mom and dad to bath their child

i had this issue before. the whole family 3 kids and parents stunk of urine. the school ager still had "accidents". I figured the beds and furniture were not cleaned properly. The clothing stunk so badly that even when I washed it here it take several washings to get the smell out AND would get into the rest of the laundry, so I had to stop. Baths would not have helped...I'm sure their whole home smelled this way.

I never said anything but it was miserable...for nearly 3 years.

I wouldn't deal with it again, I'd term. For sure. I couldn't have asked them to change their entire lifestyle if they were clearly willing to live that way.

*shudder*

I've been told that a strong urine smell can indicate there is crystal meth being made in the home.

We play hard every day. I just bathed them Tuesday night and the reek now. So yes, after one day. My son has eczema and he takes a bath every day. Don't you bathe every day?

well, the oldest boy had constant accidents, even here...he used it as a control i think with his parents, they were quite harsh....and as manipulation here.

It was pee, trust me.

That family had major issues. Makes me tired just thinking of it. Bless their hearts.

Yes, I do bath daily but, I have also hit puberty so there are more issues that could make me stinky as compared to a 5 yo and a 2 yo. I never said my kids are stinky I simply said that I don't bath them daily. I do not think on a normal day it is needed. They are clean, their hands and faces are washed. And my ped recommends not bathing them daily if it is not needed because of eczema. I do bath them when needed, if it happens to be two days in a row I do, if not I will wait a day.

I have eczema myself.

My doctor has ALWAYS suggested limited bathing or contact with water. It absolutely can make it much worse, especially if the climate/air is already on the dry side.

It depends on the season.

I have several littles in care that also have it and they too are on a limited bathing schedule.

I don't bathe everyday and I do not stink (underarms and privates are washed, but I do not get in the shower/bath daily). It's unhealthy for your skin. I would be extremely put off by a provider insisting that a child be bathed daily in their Parent Handbook. Not that you'd ever know that my child wasn't bathed daily...but...

I would put in there that they must be CLEAN. Clean means smelling nice and appearing clean. It isn't typical for a child to smell stinky after 1 day so I WOULD talk to them about it. This has to do with one or two families, not every child in the world.

I CANNOT bathe my almost 8yo daily, he bathes every other night and only uses a SUPER mild soap. He is never stinky though. His eczema is awful, if he bathes daily it gets so bad his skin cracks and bleeds. The other kids get bathed daily.

On Mondays I do 'Monday manicures' (and pedicures) and clean ears, too. but that's the extent I let it get to.

I would/will make comments to parents about things like "We played in the dirt today, Joey is super stinky and is going to really need a good bath tonight!" and then comment about how clean/not clean Joey IS in the morning.

OK I do not bathe every day especially in the winter! I didn't bathe my kidos when they were young every day either. I know my parents don't bathe their kids every night either, especially in the winter. I do expect that they are reasonably clean.
I once had a little girl that stunk! Smelled like urine. Mom swore she bathed her every night. Finally told mom she must take her to the doctor. She did. She had a piece of macaroni stuck up her nose and that is what was causing the stink!! Who knew. So yes, if it is continual I would wonder medical. Ah memories of smelly girl....

My ten year old daughter just went to daily baths... Well some nights she would do em every night but it depended. Even when she didn't get them every night she washed her hands, feet, privates, etc right before bed time. Like a sink bath. She had eczema when she was really little and yes, docs told us to limit baths too. She isn't in puberty yet, but the times a comin lol

My son does every other night complete baths (sometimes if he's extra dirty more often) and he also washes up every night. Mainly because my kids swim every day and play in the woods and dirt..l skeeter spray etc. so a quick wash up is almost always in order. But they use barely warm water and a gentle soap.

I take baths almost every day myself. And for the record, there's no factory so puberty isn't a factor lol. Most days it's every day but I have been known to just sink wash depending. Some of that depends on some personal medical issues that sometimes don't allow me to take a complete bath.

But neither me nor the kids have an odor lol.

I've had daycare kids before that have come to daycare three days in the same clothes, looking filthy. And while their bath schedule is none of my business, I do expect children to come here relatively clean and well taken care of.

I understand the eczema thing, I really do.

I really wasn't trying to upset anyone at all about the bathing thing. I really thought most people bathed everyday.

I sweat every single day and I cannot imagine not bathing every day but that's just me.

I definitely do not spend hours in the shower. I usually take one sometimes two quick baths a day. (about 5 mins or so)
Every other night I'll take a much longer shower when I shave.

This topic turned kinda funny....lol

I would probably put it under "grooming" or "health and safety" and just say that you don't allow heavy fragrances (perfumes that may be used to control BO but cause allergies) and that children must be ready for the day- trimmed nails, combed hair, clean play-ready clothes, fresh diapers/underwear, no lice/parasites ect. Most kids don't need a bath everyday, but at least every other or every 3 days. I would be happy as long as they didn't smell too bad and if their feet aren't caked on with dirt (that really bugs me when feet are dirty like that)

Yeah, I'm not gonna lie, ds used to only take 2 baths per week during non-school weeks like summer...

but now he has HORRIBLE body odor coming from his little armpits... he's only 6! He apparently can't handle dairy any longer (or possibly just non-organic dairy because of the hormones?) and his body is telling us through his pits

uh, yeah, my point was that before this current stinky issue he was totally fine with only 2 a week... maybe it's since he swims so much?

Shut up, crafty, you're rambling

Lol... Rambling? (See post about friends) lol if we can't ramble here, nobody else will put up with us hahaha

Yeah I didn't want to think about pits... I had to start shaving my daughters pits about six months ago. The topic makes me not happy lol.

And yes I can't stand the thought of my kids or daycare kids climbing into their beds with caked toe yucky gunk gross!!!! Of course, I'd be willing to bed my daycare kids don't get their sheets changed but once a year anyway... Gag.. Ok

Did ya know ... coconut oil makes an EXCELLENT "soap" that won't strip the skin of the natural oils that make it so healthy and it is antibacterial and antiviral. I use it often for cleaning the body (in addition to natural soaps just because I like their scents LOL).

MIL had the same issue when my hubs was a kid... he stuck a piece of playdoh up his nose and started to smell rotten She took him to the doc and he found it shoved right up there!

I have in policies that kids must come "daycare ready" - clean faces, clean hands, clean clothes - must smell fresh! I used to have a kiddo who had such an unstable home life... his parents were broken up and neither of them know if they were coming or going. I handled all that child's hygiene - laundry, cutting nails, trimming hair, bathing... the whole works because I loved him and his parents were useless.

Hubs and I don't bathe every day - we have lots of "cat baths" or sponge baths
We bath our DD every second or third night.

Hmm..I would NEVER tell a parent how to bath a child. I find this....really absurd. I mean if the kid reeked of urine I would have a heart to heart....but to put it in your policies?! If I was a potential client and read this as a 'rule' I would run in fear...but then again I have 3 kids and if I bathed them every night I would be a tad bit less sane than I currently am....

OK. a little OT and maybe some TMI.......

What about if you want to "spend some time together" with your spouse?

Do you only do so on the day you showered?

That's one reason why I try and stay fresh.

Lol!! I have a friend who showers every time right before... Cracks me up! I shower every other day but am freshened up and ready for activities whenever
I think some people need to shower every day- my 17 yr old is one of them... And some don't- I'm sure it has to do with a bunch of things...
I wouldn't put it in your policies- seems like overstepping to me... Talk to the parents of the offender.

I personally never really sweat, unless I'm doing some good labor work, digging up a garden, hauling mulch, that kind of thing, and it still needs to be really hot out, or heck being in labor. otherwise I never sweat, my 2 step sisters though, they break a sweat walking outside, its crazy, they need to shower everyday and they don't and everyone notices. I do not shower everyday, I usually get in the bath though in between, but not always, I really don't get dirty or stinky, during that time of the month though, even though I don't get a period, I feel like I still get a little less unpleasant for a few days, and I shower everyday then, my husband is good with it, its not noticeable.....but like I said on my sisters is really really is, but they have over all bad hygiene............I never bathe my kids everyday, unless they are covered in bug spray, or have mud all over them, but they are usually swimming in the pool everyday, and even if they get muddy, get clean then.
I have never noticed them stinky, they are to little to get really stinky.

If need be, we will often hop in the shower together as part of the "spending time"
If I tried to shower every day, my skin would try to fall off, and my hair would stand straight out. Even every other day, I use a LOT of conditioner and a very mild (home made) soap, and a fair amount of lotion.

ETA... I do think there are folks who need to shower daily ( I have two older boys who definitely NEED it.)

It strongly resembles cat urine but since I have cats myself, I knew that odor wasn't quite cat urine exaaaactly...kwim? It was very ammonia like but yet almost like an electrical burn or the smell of burning wires..... wish I could do a scratch and sniff type example...LOL!

Besides the "smell" on the parents, the no bathing for weeks, the Sponge Bob pajama's (even though they were on their way to a job interview... ) and the gaunt face in combination with the weird "acne" going on, I should have picked up on it sooner.... but nope.... I just thought they were weird.

Turns out they were....and then some.

Once you smell that smell, you will never forget it.

I have had parents that went to interviews in pajamas too!! You gotta wonder what they are thinking.
Maybe licensing needs to get some example clothing for us to sniff, so we know what to look for. I will bring that up next time I talk to her.

I have a sensitive nose! About 2 years ago I had a 2 year old that smelled horrible! So bad that it was making me nauseous all day long! I tried talking to the parents but they did nothing. I added to my contract that kids must be clean, dressed and ready for the day when they are dropped off. I ended up reporting them to DHS. I used a black washable marker and made a 2 inch like on the child's back. Over 2 weeks later it was still there. Turned out the child was in a hoarders home. The child was removed immediately. Not in any way saying this is what's going on with your daycare family. Just sharing.

In some cities, their child protective services just aren't that great. My child was in a hoarder's home, abused, and neglected and he was never removed despite multiple investigations and being reported by my child's older siblings (who did not live there) and my child's biological father (who did not live there). We went to court to fight for him privately. He was not in the system at all. Sometimes, CPS is ridiculous.

What about if you want to "spend some time together" with your spouse?

Do you only do so on the day you showered?

That's one reason why I try and stay fresh.
Lol every other day showers here but I do sink baths every day and sometimes more as far as privates are concerned (and pits etc) lol.

So I'm always fresh but certainly showers together are great for that too lol

Wow, I have never heard of that before! I heard that odd smelling urine can be a sign of diabetes and that dark urine can be a sign of dehydration.
