Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Screaming At Nap Every Day

I have a child that has been in my care for 11 months. He is 13 months old. From the day i got him as an infant he never slept. Maybe a 15 min cat nap here and there. I have kept him on a schedule and keep putting him down for nap every day at the same time no matter what just like all the other kids. They nap from 1-3 everyday. He has always screamed through nap. NOt a cry a scream. The older he gets the louder he gets. Mom says he sleeps 12 hours a night and doens't know why he won't sleep at nap. they have had issues with him slepping for naps at home too. It has gotten so bad I have had to move him to another part of the house because he is so loud he wakes everyone up. Here all the kids sleep. They are so tired they are ready to go to bed. I have kept him on the same schedule for 11 months and he still screams. I mean rarely has he ever slept. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have explained the importance of him napping and his parnts agree.

He may seriously be getting all the sleep he needs at nighttime. What time do they put him to bed for him to sleep 12 hours straight. That is a longtime. Do you get him later in the morning? If you do he may not be tired enough for naptime if he just got up from sleeping all night.

If he doesn't sleep at home either and nothing has changed in months of caring for him then this is just the way it is for him most likely. You can only do so much. If you are letting him CIO and keeping him on a routine, there is nothing you can do. I would bet the parents don't even try to nap him at home and may be lying about the sleep at night too, who knows. Either way, figure out if you can live with this or if you need to term. You are not a magician, you can only do so much.

we posted at the same time.....12 hours is not weird or anything for a kid his age. He should still need a nap. OP, is he cranky outside of nap time?

He sleeps 8:30-8:30 and they finally started letting him CIO at night when he was 8 months old......I get him about 9 every day. We play so hard you would think he would be tired! In 25 years of buisness this is my most difficult child. i personally think he has other issues as well. He will walk around the room screaming and crying and playing the whole time. Nothing wrong. just screaming and crying. I have tried every trick in the book to correct this behavior. He has feeding issues as well and the Dr finally told them it is up to him, there is nothing physically wrong with him that would prevent him form eating reagular food. He is on 2nd foods. Gags and vomits on anything else. They have seen so many specialists on this. I persnally am at the point where I say he is being a "brat" (sorry if I offend anyone) because it is almost like he can turn on and off or go from 0 to 60 in a second!

I was just thinking they either put him to bed really early so that they can get up early to get to work. The other thing I was thinking is if they put him to bed later (9-11) and he sleeps 12 hours there would be no way he would be tired enough for a nap if she puts them down around 1.

Oh cranky out side of nap? YES MAM~~~ he is horrible. Just fussing for no reason. I think they should get him up earlier imo, but hey after 25 years and 5 kids what do I know right?

who knows what they are doing at home. I cannot live with this amount of crying and unhappiness and would personally just term and fill his spot with a kid who is much happier to be there.

UPDATE: They want me to omit his nap since it seems he "doesn't need it". Uh not for a 13 month old. I am not omitting anything!!! Which tells me he doesn't go down for a nap at home......

yeah exactly. they think making him sleep less there will make him sleep more at home. Why would they want him to sleep more at home if he is supposedly sleeping a wonderful 12 hours thru the night? They ARE lying! They are desperate to make you feel that this issue is your fault (thus the "he is doing great at home) and your problem to solve. Dropping naps will make him 100% hell on wheels. no kid at 13 months is going to be happy with no naps regardless of what they are sleeping at night.

I would have to tell the family, everyone naps here, and if he continues to scream all throughout the nap, I would terminate. It is definately not worth it, to have this child, scream, wake up other children, possibly your own, not knowing where to put him, etc. it's not fair to you, the others, the parents of the others, that he is keeping up!!

I would just tell them no. It's not even worth discussing. If they want to have him up for ten hours straight then they need to keep him with them.

That's a level of specialty care that only a parent can do.
