The other day when dcb had fever in the afternoon, she asked if I had taken it rectally. I was like um no! She said that the dr said it should be taken it rectally. I'm sorry, but that just doesn't sound fun to me LOL! Do any of you do this or just under the arm or forehead?

I have an expensive, reliable and accurate ear thermometer.

If parents want temps rectally, they are welcome to come pick up and temp their kid any way they choose.

Rectal temps used to be the norm for little kids but now with modern technology its not necessary any longer.

I'm with Blackcat on this... I have a very reliable ear thermometer; I do nothing but infants & have never taken a rectal temp in 16 years

May I ask which ear thermometer you use? I would much rather do that than rectal any day ha! I feel like the under arm takes too long and the forehead one doesn't work that great.

Ha! I was told to never rectally scan any child for the exact reason BC gave.

I see that as beyond my job...

Erm no. Not going to happen. There are so many ways of gauging the child's temperature that are just as, if not more, accurate.

Other than the obvious reason of my not wanting to do it rectally, I'd also be scared of having an older child comment on it out of context. That's something I don't even want to get involved in, even if it is easy to explain away.

Of course, I'm just a paranoid little bird.

Sounds to me like a case of the parent expecting parental level care from the provider.
The doctor didn't say the provider should do rectal. Just that rectal is more accurate. The parent chose the doc, so if you (parent) know they expect rectal, then YOU (parent) go home and do rectal.
It's not the provider's job.

Um no way. I didn't like doing it with my own kids, and didn't really do it that way. They sometimes did at the doctor's office, but not always. If they are sick enough that it needs to be that accurate, they need to see the doc anyway.

No you can accidentally rupture a colon like that so I wouldn't do it. I just use the under the armpit method.

I guess I'm the odd one out lol. It never phased me, for an infant that is. Older kids...no, just no lol. I'm going to get an ear one too though. Just seems easier for the big kids and figure might as well use it for the babies too.

For the children in care I don't feel that I need a super accurate temp. Under the arm or forehead is enough to tell me if the child should be sent home. They can do a more accurate temp at home.

This. I found when the kids had a fever it was usually pretty obvious and an under arm reading was close enough. If anything my issue is with false LOW readings.
