Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>I Actually Closed Today
SilverSabre25 10:03 AM 08-02-2013
For the first time ever, I closed due to my own illness. I've worked through some doozies, but this strep throat is kicking my butt big time. I'm on the mend, but yesterday I was so miserable I had to have my mom come take over for me for the afternoon until my DH could get home. By 2:30 PM yesterday I had decided to close today, and fortunately my sister was able to take my kids so I'm alone all day. What a weird feeling! But it's so nice to actually rest when I'm sick!

My symptoms match strep perfectly, but DH is switching jobs and our sucky insurance ended on July 31st *I think*. But even if it didn't, they only cover $75 of an appointment...which means that it is very expensive to go to the doctor. It's so ironic that as I was starting to get sick Weds night I was telling the kids, "No one is allowed to get sick or seriously injured until September!" then I end up being the sick one! And of course, DH started a new job Monday and can't miss any of the training.

But, I'm confident that DS had this earlier in the week and while he's 2 and didn't act very sick, he was better within 2 or 2.5 days, so there's hope for me, that this won't be a very bad case...

Hope you start feeling better soon!

I remember that feeling in between job/insurance changes ... I felt like I was walking around just WAITING for someone to break a bone or get horribly sick.

so glad you are able to rest! I hope you feel better asap!

My dh WILL NOT take antibiotics unless it's ABSOLUTELY necessary. He hasn't taken them since early childhood. He gets strep almost every year, and he gargles with salt water, and then drinks this: Whiskey, REAL lemonade and green tea, all warmed up together. He swears by it, and it has ALWAYS helped him get better without antibiotics!

don't you need antibiotics? I think it can(in rare cases) spread to your brain.

Strep throat is the worst. I cannot imagine suffering through that without antibiotics. I hope you feel better soon!

Well, from my research (yay internet) most of the cases are self limiting, which means they get better on their own without treatment. I'm already feeling markedly better and am supporting my immune system. If I'm not still improving by tomorrow, I'll be going to a clinic.

But I am hoping to do this without dropping a couple hundred dollars on a doctor's visit for antibiotics, yes. I probably wouldn't be soldiering through it if our insurance was reasonable.

4 more weeks to good insurance...

feel better. Don't forget to gargle with salt water or I found mouthwash to work the best. If mouthwash can kill the smell of ds's sour cream and onion breath then it can kill strep throat lol! (he was eating chips yesterday)

I'm sorry sweetie about the insurance - that sucks! If you lived a little closer to me (guessing we are @ 45 min away) I would get you the drugs! My BIL is a doctor & they always have samples of antibiotics/typical drugs at their house. Sending you hugs & healing thoughts!

Glad you closed and have your kids somewhere so you can rest up! I hear ya on the insurance thing. We were without for a few weeks and it was horrible. Now our deductible is $11,000, so yea, still horrible. Feel better soon!

Thanks for all the well wishes, everyone I am continuing to feel better by the hour. If my left tonsil felt as good as my right tonsil, I'd be in business! It's always the left that takes the longest to get better...really weird. It tends to be the left lymph gland that gets swollen any time I'm sick, too.

We did figure out that we can easily afford a Walgreen's clinic visit if necessary, but within an hour of deciding to go I made a huge leap in feeling better so put that off until tomorrow. Progress is progress!

Doses of Vitamin B, Vitamin C, echinacea tea with lots of honey, lots of water, and my mom's tasty garlicky vegetable soup have definitely done the trick. And taking yesterday off work...and DH taking care of our kids today...
