I was wondering how exactly does a deposit work? Does a parent give a deposit plus a week's pay when enrolling?

Ours pay for 1 contracted week which then goes in savings until their last week. Then they pay for the first full week. So yes...they pay double.

My parents pay a 2 week deposit and then the first week of care (so essentially they pay 3 weeks up front). We apply the two week deposit to the last two weeks of care provided they give proper notice.
