Well, schools are closed tomorrow and Tuesday. I'm even inland, in the Susquhanna Valley in Pa. Hope every in the path takes the necessary precautions and stays safe. We got hit pretty good with Tropical Storm Lee last year. With flooding and power outages. Some of our bridges/roads are still not repaired from that.

I am in NJ and schools are closed here Mon & Tues also. All my parents have at least one parent in a local school system and let me know they'll be staying home even if I was open so I got both days off without having to officially close. I just hope we aren't without power for an extended time!!!

Stay safe east coasters!!!

Upstate NY here....We have an early dismissal today, and haven't heard much about tomorrow yet.

People are still recovering from last year's Irene and Lee.

In OH I don't think schools are closed (not in central anyway) but since the storm intensified overnight, and the pressure dropped even further I'm beginning to be rather nervous. We'll be gettin tropical-storm force winds on already saturated ground, from directions we don't usually get major winds...I have a feeling that this will be very bad.

And I didn't get to the store yesterday. Going this afternoon and finishing all the laundry and dishes in the meantime. If I lose power it will be in a clean house!

So sad. I'm open but all the businesses and highways are closed, yet, two kids are on their way - and no, the parents are not going to work!

I'm not that far from ohio and they are calling for 90mphr winds to come. Its so cold outside too. I'm debating wether I'm taking the kids tonite to girl guides because I have to drive the country roads and my van sits up so high that it will be throwing it everywhere. I told my odd that I will be late picking her up (she has dance team tryouts) because its open field. Grr I wish dh took my van and left his home.

DCM shows up with the 2 kids and says , oh yeah, I'm just going to do some laundry and fill water jugs..... She says this to me as my washer is in view and running, my line of jugs are on the counter and I'm actively filling them up and I say, yep, I'm doing that too, kids don't bother me

That would have been my response. You have way more patience for parents that can't get anything done with kids around than I do.

Stay smart, and safe everyone. You all are in my thoughts today!

Dad is home too.
I expected this family to show. I wasn't surprised in the least, but its sad. I stayed open because I want to get paid, so I can't exactly get mad when someone shows besides its payday and they brought cash, it will be good to have on hand.

All good points. Very good points inf fact.

STILL. A bit ridiculous and sad.

I'm glad you got paid, and in cash. That will be good to have on hand. Silver lining in everything, right?

It's already nasty here today. I have every kid even though some roads are already closed. The schools are closing early/before lunch also. Thankfully I made a massive pot of soup for lunch.

Stay safe everyone!

My town is directly in the path in NJ. None of my dc kids came today, thank goodness. I just don't want them to be here and lose power, or the parents can't get here to get them and I have them all for 24+ hours. I will likely have tomorrow off as well since that is when the worst is coming.

Everyone be safe!

Silver- do you think our area is going to be hit hard tonight/tomorrow worse than the lasst round of storms that knocked out all the power? I should probably prep more...

It's really hard to say. We've had a lot of storms this year that came out of the south west, or straight west. That's the usual direction :P This one is coming directly opposite and I think that poses a risk. Also, the ground is saturated with rain already and that also poses more of a danger.

AEP was going to send crews to the coast...but changed it's mind when they saw the forecast for here. I think they're expecting a lot in the way of power outages here. Sustained winds of 40 mph and gusts over 60 mph is taxing on trees, power lines, poles, etc. Concern is definitely warranted...and then we can feel silly when nothing happens :P

Flashlights, batteries, charge your tech devices, make a plan for staying warm if your power goes out/cooking if the power goes out (gas stove ftw!), where you'll go if the power is out...I see no point in getting jugs of water, for example, but basically prepare like it's going to be a winter storm like the ones we're used to. But without as much snow. And in October.

ETA: The Derecho in June was hurricane strength, for comparison. That 75-80 mph gust that whooshed through here did a crapton of damage and that was one gust! (and that is the strength of a Cat 1 hurricane. Which Sandy is). This is Tropical Storm strength winds and gusts, but more of them over a longer time span.

Good info! I'm going to flip over the laundry now and prepare a few extras!

I am in Ohio, too, and I was hearing up to 60 mph gusts. The house is rattling every once in a while, making my 10 year old very nervous. She hates wind . I am making my husband see if our generator is working (just in case)...we have never used it and it has been sitting in the garage for years. And our battery back up for our sump pump went yesterday...of course. My husband is insisting that this is not going to be bad here in Ohio and that the weather men are just exagerating.

I'll be praying for all of you who are in the thick of this storm! For your safety and no damage!

Winds have started really kicking in now. Our lights have flickered quite a few times. There are about 31 in my county w/o power already. We're just waiting for it to be our turn: (

I am in western New York (state, not city) and it's been raining and windy all day. They are calling for wind gusts of about 55mph starting around 11pm. I am fully expecting the power to stay on and to go to work tomorrow.

Adding: All the schools in our area are closed tomorrow, but no other businesses. So daycares are going to be full with sa kids. Why even bother closing schools?

I couldn't agree more. I'm in central NY and schools are closed (some roads as well) but we didn't get hit hard and now I have a house full of sa kiddos too.

We didn't lose our power. The winds kept me up most of the night. My 5 yr old slept right through it. My 8 yr old stayed up with hubby to keep an eye on things. It's still raining, but it's a light steady rain and it's still windy.
We had no damge. My neighbor is missing some shingles off his garage roof and 3 houses down, the house is missing some siding. I haven't ventured off my porch so I don't know what other damage/debis there is.
Hope everyone in the path is safe!

We used to hav e a basketball hoop....it is laying in my driveway. My husband said "Oh, good thing we werent parked there." I said "no, too bad we werent!"just glad we are all safe.
The kicker is I am supposed to have first dcb start tomorrow! But, his mom is a FB friend of mine so maybe he will still come!

Hi I am new to the forum and have a question for everyone. I have 2 children enrolled in a local daycare in my area and due to hurricane sandy I received a letter sent home stating that I will have to pay for the 4 days that were missed and I was appalled. I feel that I should not have to pay since no service was provided, no overhead that they incurred due to no power, they are not paying the teachers for time off,and since daycare was not provided I had to take off of work for the entire time even though my business was open. I also own a small business and since I was closed for two days I cannot send a bill to customers stating that they owe me money for a service I did not provided. I feel that I am in the right by not having to pay for the four days that were missed. Please help with similar stories or with help of what I should do
