Default BUSTED! Too Funny

Today one of my daycare moms comes to pick up her infant son. She is always here right at 3:30pm on the dot. Today she shows up an hour late. I don't mind, but its not like her. She comes to the door wearing her work clothes that she had on this morning with her name tag on from work.

She quickly says "Oh my gosh - I'm sooo sorry. I got hit with traffic and EVERY red light possible". I reply with "its okay. No problem". She's complaining about the traffic and trying to leave really fast which is unlike her, when suddenly I hear her older 4 yr old son in the car saying "Mom! Hurry up! You said we'd go back to the mall!" Say what??

Her face turns bright red... and she won't look me in the face. A big sign of lying. And she always picks up the older son after she picks up "Timmy"... I just said "ohhh got stuck at the mall huh?" and she says "oh well... ummm... I was at work today and they sent me home at 10am this morning because I was throwing up like crazy! I have some kind of virus I guess... probably a 24 hour virus so I went home to rest and have been throwing up all day". I was just like HUH? I said "so you were able to pick up "Sammy" and hang out with him for awhile?" She pretended to not hear me and quickly left.

Her whole story didn't make sense. Why would she still be wearing her work clothes with name tag at 4:30pm if she went home sick throwing up at 10am?? And then her son busting her out with the "Lets go back to the mall" yell... So I'm guessing she got off early and hung out with her other son... that is fine - but why lie about it? SO weird. And then she tries to put her tag back on and look like she was returning from work I guess... and I don't think she expected her other son to yell out like that and squash her story. lol

As she was leaving I said "I hope that 'Timmy' doesn't catch your stomach virus! If he has any symptoms, please keep him home tomorrow". She was probably thinking 'oh crap - now she's going to think he's sick and it was all my weird lie' lol

She was busted...too funny.

Are you going to mention it to her? It may be worth a "you know, DCM, there's really no need to lie to me".

Kids spill the beans every time, don't they?

"So, did you have a good time with [older child] at the mall yesterday? It's always so nice to get some special time with one child. What are you doing special with [younger child]?" ::smile innocently::

I would totally call her out on it. I don't know how people can leave their children in someone elses care without letting that person know exactly how to reach them quickly. I know they all have cell phones but I would call a parent at their job before calling their cell and that is just wasting what could be valuable time. If a parent just came in and said I have the day off, then I would know to just call their cell in case of an emergency. And then to LIE about it after they are caught, that is just super disrespectful, I wouldn't find it funny - I'd be pretty mad that they thought I was some kind of idiot.

For grins, I prolly would have texted her early in the morning telling her that you felt like you had a stomach bug and wouldn't be working for them today.

HaHa I totally thought about doing that! lol

This morning I asked how she was feeling & that I will let her know if the baby shows any signs of having her illness. She almost seemed to not know what I was talking about... cause she forgot her lie! Sheesh.

I think it is so disrespectful when the parents lie to me. It drives me crazy. I'm almost used to it, but I still despise it. I could care less if she was at the mall all day long, but to lie about is just super weird.

I'm with you. I charged a flat weekly rate whether the kids come or not so I'm one of those providers that doesn't mind if mom/dad are home and DC kid is here at daycare. You paid for the spot, you'd better get your money's worth (thank goodness most parents keep them home for special time with their kids anyway).

And I'm TOTALLY with you on the whole "don't lie" thing. Why bother? Why not just be honest about it? The only thing about your whole ordeal that really bothers me is the point that she a) picked up an hour late and b) lied. I wouldn't bet against the possibility that she didn't even go to work at all today, she could have been worried that you wouldn't take her kid if she was home from work KWIM but instead she got herself into a mess . She probably had some "me" time and then went to pick the 4yo up and decided to hang out with him at the mall for a bit and lost track of time.

Oh well, what's done is done. If it were me I'd approach her and say "You know Sally, it doesn't bother me if you're home from work and want to bring "Timmy" to daycare. What bothered be was that you didn't let me know, then you were late and didn't bother calling me and then you fibbed about it. Next time just be honest with me, things happen. I get it. But I'd appreciate a little honesty, we'll get along better that way okay?" All with a smile and lots of understanding.
