Hi all you smart and crafty ladies!
I'm in need of some ideas for Mother's day presents/crafts for the kids (ages 1 yr to 5 yrs) to make for their moms. Plus I like hearing about what projects y'all are doing. I learn so much from all of you!
So share what you are doing with your kids please!
Post pics if you have any
Thank you

We will be making Vanilla Brown Sugar Foot scrub. I found the recipe on Pinterest and looks very simple with basic ingredients. The kids can combine the scrub and decorate their mason jars for Mom. I'm looking forward to doing it and receiving it!

A few weeks ago we planted marigold seeds. And I found surprisigly nice primary colored ceramic pots (they are maye 5" high) in the dollar section of Target. So we are going to put white handprints on those pots and plant the marigolds inside.

We painted Hugs barels brown. I will pick up the flowers for them this weekend. I also took nice pictures of the kids in family groups that I'm getting printed on 5x7 canvas

Wow you guys are really giving nice gifts! I need to step up my game!

I have always had the kids make rhubarb jam! I have rhubarb in my yard. The kids can easily cut through the rhubarb with plastic knives. The recipes calls for sugar, strawberry jam, and the rhubarb. I put it in baby food jars and they decorate the jar with flower stickers.
I believe rhubarb leaves are poisonous. The rhubarb is outside the fenced in play yard.

We are getting white plates from the dollar store and coloring them with sharpies. It is a treasure that will last. If you bake them in the oven the marker will never wash off.

Love this idea! What temp and how long do you bake them?
Cat Herder 08:04 AM 05-01-2013
We are doing the same thing as Blandino, just a different theme. We planted strawberry plants.
The handprint art will be a (you guessed it) strawberry.

You bake them for 30 min at 350° I havent tried it yet but plan to buy the plates and do one this weekend to make sure it works.
I like the plate idea.
Last year we did the ivory cloud soap (put it in the microwave to make a huge cloud, have kids crumble up, add some water and a little food coloring). They pushed it into silicone heart ice molds and once it dried we popped it out and put 3-4 in a bag for each Mom. They loved them.

We did that last year too! This year we're making a key ring using modelling clay and cut out with the same heart mold we used for the soap last year. The kids put their thumbprints on and I used a toothpick to poke a hole and to write the year on the back. We will also make Epsom salt/baking soda/ginger/lavender bath salts. I'm still figuring out what we'll put it in...and the kids will make some cards...haven't worked that out yet either.

I have little light green metal pails that have butterfly cutouts on the top that I'm going to have the children put their fingerprints/hand prints on or just paint-depending on how well the hand prints turn out (all my children are 2.5 and under so sometimes it's hard to get a hand print)! I'm also going to fill them with a real flower and also make a flower with their face in the middle and glue it on stick so it looks like they are a flower growing out of the pail. Thanks for reminding me-I need to get them started!
I'm following Cat Herder and Blandino on this one, handprint pots
I really like the strawberries idea!
I saw this poem/muffin mix gift and thought it was cute (the poem anyway) but it's not on my list of things to make anytime soon

What kind of paint did you use on the tile and was the tile glazed? This sounds like such a cute idea and I still have one like it that my DD made me in kindergarten 15 years ago!
but they baked theirs in a kiln.
Could we paint it, let it dry and ModPodge over it?
Thanks!

I just used acrylic paint and did not seal it.
The tile was ceramic, not sure if it was glazed (I would say no)

found on
www.bystephanielynn.com through pinterest:
You want to begin by mixing 2 Cups of Brown Sugar and 1 Cup of Granulated Sugar together until there are no lumps. Add in 1 Cup of Sunflower Oil and 1 Tablespoon of Pure Vanilla Extract. {I like to use Sunflower Oil for this body scrub because it does not carry the strong scent that Olive Oil does}
Mix together well and scoop into a sealable glass container.
I'll be making a trip to Costco for sugar and hopefully sunflower oil!

Here are a few things I have from pinterest that I plan on doing this year. I love the idea of the handprint flower pot with a flower in it. I might have to go shopping this weekend

This is my first post. Yay!
Anyway, this year I primed veggie cans. My students picked out the color of paint they wanted- some required us to mix paints to get a certain color, that was neat. They applied two coats of paint then I set them to dry. The next step was applying their handprint to the cans. Then I used small foam letters to put their names on their handprint. Next the kids decorated their cans with various foam cut outs, felt flowers, etc. Whatever they wanted. Then we filled them with soil and I let the kids pick out what flower seeds they wanted to plant. I took a nice picture of each child planting the seeds, making sure that their name was facing forward on the can. We will then put those pictures in their cards for Mom. It was a bit of work, for sure, we worked on it for over a week and now the flowers are in the process of growing. I think the Moms will really like them, though.
I have pictures but I do not know how to insert them in my message.

We are giving canvasses painted blue or black as the night sky, glitter stars, with handprints in the shape of a heart and the verse "I love you forever, I'll like you for always, As long as I'm living, My Mommy you'll be" modge-podged on with a picture of them taken here cut into the shape of the heart their handprints made. They actually turned out quite nice, and every step of the craft had something to do with theme we were doing that week (family, Robert Munsch, space) The glitter stars were made by the toddlers sticking their fingers in glue and dotting the sky. I also found a killer deal on these cute shirts that say I love my Mommy. My DS has one and the moms always comment on it, so I bought them each one and am wrapping the present in it. I hope they like it!
Sunshine74 04:12 PM 05-04-2013
My favorite project was the one I did last year with the younger toddlers. We did handprints on glass vases so that it looked like the hands were holding the vases, and then I put faux flowers in them. I used acrylic paint and baked the vases in the oven at 350 for 30 mins (start in a cold oven, put them in and turn it on, leave them in for an hour or so after the 30 mins so they are cool when you take them out) I wrote the child's name on it with a paint sharpie after I baked them because I wasn't sure how the marker would react in the oven.

We painted 8x10 canvases blue with acrylics, then did 4 handprints in a 'sun' shape, orange at the palm/yellow at the fingertips and I bought fancy lettered stickers and put "You are my sunshine" on each one, Modge Podge sprayed them gloss. They look awe.some. I printed photos of each child signing I love you in sign langage to put on white gift bags that they are going to decorate to 'wrap' them in.
I needed 10 total
$25 canvas
$7 stickers
paint & modge podge spray I already had

Love this idea! Totally stealing it.
I actually just read that the Sharpies will come off!
Also, if you bake it make sure you put the plate in there when the oven is cold and let it get up to 350 otherwise they'll break.
They recommended porcelein markers on one website and some even said seal it.

I ordered a couple crafts from oriental trading a few weeks ago, so We are doing a tri fold mothers day card, there is a hand print side and a part with a heart for a picture, and then they can decorate them however they want, and we are doing sun catcher wind chimes, We did the pictures today, and will finish everything else up through the week.

I'm a fan of projects the kids can do with minimal help, I don't think I need to give a parent a gift that had to have "me" do most of the work.
This year we are giving them fruitloop flowers (a picture of a flower with fruitloops pasted on the outline), a plastic spoon with hershey kisses wrapped prett with a "spoon full of kisses" poem.
And a coloured noodle necklace.
My favourite from a past year was teacup planters. I bought each child a teacup and saucer from the Goodwill. Hot glued the cup to the saucer and each child filled the cup with soil and planted a flower. There was a poem that went along with it.
Now I'm focusing more on process crafts more than a "fabulous" gift. It benefits the kids more, even for special days like this one.
wahmof3 02:41 PM 05-06-2013
I'm pretty sure I bought the stands at Hobby Lobby or Joanns. They are mini easels
The tiles are 5 3/4 X 5 3/4 (or close to)
They are the cutest things

We are making the footprint butterflies on flowerpots as well, We went today and got some small house plants to put in them and will be focusing on planting and dirt and all that it encompasses this week as our theme (painted the flowerpots last week) Can't wait to see the moms' faces
MamaBearCanada 08:10 AM 05-07-2013
I got small canvases with stands from the dollar store. They put their handprint on I painted a heart in the middle of their handprint & wrote a saying next to handprint. "I carry your love for me wherever I go" or "I hold your love in my hands and heart"

One of my kids was going out of town to visit Dad, so I sent her home on her last day with her Mother's day gift so Mom wouldn't have to wait. Today Mom calls gushing about how much she loved it, thanking me. That made me feel good because so often no one mentions the gifts the kids and I make at all. So that made me feel good. Now I can't wait for the rest of the kids to take theirs home this week.

That is so nice that the mom was so happy!! My husband saw the tile handprints that my dck's did and said oh the moms will love that. I thought, if they do, they never tell me. Very rarely do parents say anything about the gifts after they receive them. That makes me so mad after all the thought, expense and time doing it with the kids. They could at least tell me how they liked them. It's like they typically open the gift over the weekend and then just forget or something.

We have done this, but just on paper for a card, not pots. I just covered the child's foot in paint and stamped it on the paper, right foot on the left and left foot on the right so it comes out looking like butterfly wings. You only need to paint in the body and antennae.

I got a stone mold kit from walmart. I wanted to press in their hands but it set too fast. Next time I will mix it first and then pour it in the mold.
I hope these turn out ok.

One year we used Play-doh and made a mold of the child's hand.
We then filled the mold with plaster of paris.
Once the plaster was dry, we peeled the Play-doh off and had a perfect handprint of the child.
You can also make them into plaques where the handprint is simply raised verses indented.
It looked similar to these.
slorey 07:51 AM 05-08-2013
Just did the footprint butterflies and forgot to switch the feet when I pressed them on the paper
Now I have to decide if it is worth re-doing them or just going with what I have. Maybe it will still look like a butterfly when I draw the center body part...but since 2 of my 3 kids here today freaked out when I painted their feet (my ds was one of them), I think I will have to make due with what I have for at least those 2. Leave it to me to screw up a simple project

Yep! The play-doh makes a perfect mold....fingerprints and all.
Then you just pour the plaster into the mold and wait for the plaster to dry.
The Play-doh peels off easily.

No worries, it is what it is. If the moms don't like it they don't have to get anything next year
I did fix the one dcg who thought it was fun to paint her feet but that was mostly because I still have to do one with her older sister later and didn't want mom to wonder why they weren't done the same

I bought the tiles for $.67 each and I bought some pretty acrylic paint.
They turned out very nice!!
I have a question... if you were to seal it..what would you use?
I was thinking of some kind of spray ... but what brand is best?
Also where is the cheapest place to get the mini easels?
They are $3.50 at Michaels and I have 14 ..so that can add up.
I did $1 flower pots (Target $1 section), acrylic paint for their handprints, and message in Sharpie marker... was hoping to add a poem on a little steak to stick out of the dirt - still searching for the right one =)
$1 flower pots
$2 potting soil
On hand - Acrylic paint
On hand - Sharpie marker
They came out pretty cute =)

So no, don't wait for the play-doh to dry, the plaster needs to be dry though.
The plaster will dry much faster than the play-doh.
The play-doh works great because it stays pliable and moist for much longer than plaster.
Here is an easy to follow recipe/directions.

I'm loving all of these ideas!! Wish I had some DCKs to make mother's day gifts with, haha.
Just wanted to add about the handprint on the tiles - when my DD and DS were in daycare a few years ago, this was their Christmas gift to us ... a handprint on the tile - handprint was in green, and then their provider used the puffy glitter paint to make a zig zag across the handprint, which looked like a lights, and a yellow start on top, so it looks like a Christmas tree.

If I remember right I tried to seal it with a spray, but it did something to the paint. It either faded it or smeared it (even after it dried). So that's why we didn't seal it. I could also be thinking of the year we did handprints on a mug and planted a flower in the mug. I would google it and I would do a test run too.
I don't think I paid that much for easels either. I wonder if a hardware store would carry a bracket that could be hot glued to the back to make it stand, like a picture frame?

We did silhouettes of each child. It worked out great because the kids did the majority of the work. They painted the canvas a pearl white color, then I took profile pictures of them, printed it out onto sticker paper, cut out their heads and taped them to the canvas, then they painted the canvas again black and gold (mixed together), I removed the stickers, then we finished off with painting stencil letters in gold. This one is my daughter's:

These are the butterfly footprints on pots I am doing for the 5week old:
(not my picture)
The rest just painted pots, they were $0.97 at Wal-Mart and I already had the acrylic paints. We also started from seeds ($.20 for one pack, $1.98 small soil pack). I've found bright/bold colors work best. The pinks, yellow, and lighter colors soaked in and looked washed out, we did a second coat on those ones
I liked the idea of the flag in the pots with a poem that pp suggested!

I love, love, love that! I don't think I could get it together in two days although I do have canvases as I have tried my hand at painting and have some blank ones.
I'll put it on my list for next year though. So cute!

I needed 10 total
$25 canvas
$7 stickers
paint & modge podge spray I already had
That sounds so cute and I'm looking for last minute ideas. I have all the supplies except I have the paint on modge podge.
Is acrylic paint hard to wash off their hands when they are finished? Do you just need soap and water or something more?
Thanks, Laurel

I'm doing a combo this year. First I'm doing them a cute laminated picture frame that has a stand and a spot I'm going to put a small picture if their kiddo... Basically I printed it on card stock them laminated then cut it out.
Then the kids are doing them something similar as the plaster except I'm doing their foot print and I'm coloring the plaster and putting a hanging hook on it they can hang on the wall. The moms of two if mine are in new to them houses and said they had nothing to decorate and out in the wall.
I think for Father's Day I'm going to do something with canvases....

No acrylics aren't hard to wash off of skin, at least the ones we have aren't. The ones we use are latex acrylic made with artificial latex. If it dries it peels right off but it's easy to wash off too with just soap and water

We did the upside down flower pot with acrylic paint drips. We put a candle inside and made a cupcake liner flower.
I wrote a little note to go inside of cards
You make the darkest night
Shine like a candle bright
Like a flower seed you sow
In your love I bloom and grow

Thanks! I've had a chance now to look at the box. It doesn't say anything about latex but it does say: Clean up with water. No solvents required. When all else fails, read the directions.

just made are mothers day projects. We were gonna make the plates with the handprints but my store of course did not have enough of any plate. Soooo I found 97 cent cutting boards that I let the older kids color then put there hand prints on and I wrote I love mommy! on they turned out soo cute. And I sprayed the clear coat paint over it so hopefully nothing will come off. The handle of the cutting board has a hole in it so if they want to hang it up they can.

Can I have a supply list for the silhouette craft and just curious how much this craft costs to do?

Cute stuff, you guys! I love the tiles on the easels, I might have to try those for Christmas.
We did canvas bags with handprint/footprint flowers and footprint butterflies. Most of my families are sibling pairs so the older one did a butterfly on one side and the younger one did flowers on the other. I wasn't thinking when I did the babies ~ trying to get handprints on the under one's is next to impossible! I should have stuck with the butterflies for them! But they turned out ok

Yep, it's actually one of my cheaper Mother's Day gifts. Here is what I needed:
- Canvas
I purchased the canvas at Michaels. They sell 7 packs of 11x14 canvas for $19.99, but I always do the 40% coupons (from my Smart Phone, but you can print it up at home and bring it), so it ended up being about $13.50.
- Paint
I used acrylic paint (pearl white for the bottom layer and black + gold for the top layer). You can really use any kind of paint on canvas but I figured acrylic would be best for longevity. I have a thing with purchasing acrylic paint (ok I really love to paint shop) so I just bought new. I over-purchased too! You actually don't need much and you probably have what you need on hand already.
- Paint brushes
I'm sure you already have paint brushes on hand. The big foam ones work best for covering large surfaces and making a smooth final product (they're fail proof for the little ones!).
- Alphabet stencils or stamps
I already have both on hand, but if you have good penmanship I'm sure you could just paint it yourself. I wanted something the kids could do without it looking too archaic.
- Sticker computer paper or vinyl
I actually purchased a roll of re-positional vinyl since I read it works better for leakage. It was around $10 for a huge roll on Amazon. There is plenty leftover I can use for something else now.
- Camera
I'm sure you have this already. You need it to take a profile picture.
- Printer to print out the images
So I ended up spending $13.50 (canvas) + $10 (vinyl) +~$7 (new acrylic paint) = $30.50 / 6 children (plus leftovers for other projects) = ~$5 per child.
If you have the paint and sticker paper on hand then the cost would only be about $2.50 per child.

I bought a bouquet of different kinds of flowers for $15 and separated them into vases. Then I set up a flower shop center. The kids can come tomorrow and "buy" flowers for their mommy with pretend money and decorate a container with ribbons and paint to put them in. My kids are all 2 and I like to find things they can do themselves.

We did this- handprints on foam w/ paint & glittered, then I cut them out, cut a vase & leaves out of some scrapbook paper, glued it onto a glittered board and it's artsy and awesome. Just needs a frame.
