Let's say you decide to do a minor home improvement yourself so there is just supplies and no actual labor costs. Would you list all the supplies under home improvement (like screws, particle board, wood, nails, grout, etc)? Or under home supplies?

It depends on the kind of work that was done. Did the work increase the value of the home. If so, it's a home improvement. If not, it's supplies.

If this work is done in 2014 there is a new rule that says you can deduct any expense that is less than $500 if you have prepared the following statement for your file at the beginning of 2014: "Section 1.263(a)-1(f) deminimus safe harbor election - I am using this safe harbor rule for items I purchase for my business in 2014 that cost $500 or less."
