Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Mini Vent: Parents Don't Attempt To Spell My Name
EchoMom 05:37 AM 11-01-2012
So most people think I have a long and difficult last name. (My maiden name was so much easier!). But like anything, it's not that bad of a last name if you just take the time to learn it. But even so, it annoys me and makes me feel slightly disrespected that half of my DC families don't even attempt to spell it on their checks.

Half the families write out my name. The other half of my families just write my first name only or first name and last initial. I have to make sure I fill in the rest of my name on the checks when I sign them and deposit. Once I forgot to and then when I deposited them the bank called and said they couldn't put it in because it had no last name so I had to drive back, get the check, fill it out and re-deposit. Hassle, but now I just make sure to always double check and fill them in.

Would you find this rude? Would you insist that parents learn to spell your full name and completely fill in their checks? I mean really, it shouldn't be that difficult to write it somewhere in their house and copy it if they need to.

Put up a sign in your sign in area with BIG FONT that reads, "Please make all checks payable to Girly Girlwithahardlastname. Thank you!"

My parents don't sign in, don't need to. They just leave their check in the diaper bag, or if they don't bring a bag, they hand me their check or have their kid hand me there check.

I could put a little drop box by the door with my name on the box?

Unless they treated me poorly in other areas I wouldn't worry about it. I would just get a stamp with my name and either leave it out where they put their things in the morning so they can stamp it, or ask them to just leave the name on the check blank and stamp it myself.

Where can you get a stamp? I like that idea. My last name is hard to spell and say. I still have a hard time saying it correctly. LOL Now I shrug my shoulders. Oh well i have forever to learn it...

1/2 of my parents send me with a blank check. Grandparents/divorsed parents pick up and the parent with the obligation of paying me leaves a check. I email the amount at the end of the day. I wouldn't get to upset about it. Its alot easier than having to chase down your money.

I have the same issue. I just make sure I fill it it. I would rather fill it in the right way then have then do it wrong and then have to do what you did with the bank.......

I invoice my parents through e-mail. The invoice has both my first and last name on it.

If I am handed a check without my full name on it, I hand it back and ask them to fill it out entirely.

If they leave it in the diaper bag, then I would give it back to them at pick up time and ask them to please fill out the check completely.

I would also consider giving parents a busines card to keep in their checkbooks. They can refer to it when writing out their checks.

It IS rude and it IS direspectful. I consider checks half written to be incomplete payment which in my book, means late fees and no services.

I have a hard last name and while I accepted checks I gave parents a few business cards when they enrolled. One for car, one for fridge, one for checkbook. That way if they were going to be late or had a sick kid they had my number at hand also!

Now I use MMK so nobody cares how to spell my last name

I also do this as well CAT and they still don't attempt to spell my name.

Yeah, but you seem to have odd parents who are not motivated by money-related penalties.

Next time you get a check with no last name on it you could just say to the DCP at pick up -I see you forgot to put my last name on the check. Let me just get you a pen so you can finish writing it out. They will likely ask how it is spelled. You could tell them that you know it is a hard one to spell and offer to write it down on a paper that they can keep handy for next time.
Thank them and then repeat each week until they finally get it

My last name is easy, it's my first name that causes trouble. I am a cash-only daycare, but when I used to accept checks I demanded that checks be filled out COMPLETELY and that my name was spelled correctly - otherwise the check would be handed back. If it continued, I would no longer accept checks (cash only) from the family. YES, it IS rude!!!!

I had a short (4 letters) but hard last name to write also that is always misspelled or mistaken for a different lastname (Nunez, Munoz, Munez etc) ... my maiden last name is not a common one and I don't meet many people with it and I've ALWAYS had problems with my bank whenever someone wrote it wrong. Now that I'm married and have a longer last name (10 letters) that is also commonly misspelled I just REQUIRE that all of my families give me a blank check. I'd rather write my own name on it than have problems with my bank. I want to get paid .

This is what I do as well (except certain parents I had a hard copy directly to)

My first name is always hard for parents to spell, I get all kinds of variations but if it's not correct I always hand it back and ask they fix. I just say its a liability with my bank, but really I just prefer not to write on the check. I guess I'm to paranoid and don't trust anyone anymore!

You can get them at Vistaprint: http://www.vistaprint.com/rubber-sta...11817016&GNF=0

or Rubberstamps.com (sorry, apparently the url for the website is a no-no )

We have a local store that makes them, too.
