Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>If you do Preschool Curriclum - How do you do ABC's?

I've seen curriculums that do the alphabet letters in order and some that do them randomly. I know my own kids learned them out of order in school. Which way do you do it? Is there a reason for doing it a certain way?

I use handwriting without tears. You can find it at hwtears.com

They do the "frog jump" letters first..... EFDBMN (I might be missing some). ....
It's all hands on materials and I just love it. It would be easier for you to look at the web page than for me to explain how it works.

Otherwise, we play a lot of games to teach letters...all letters....and no particular order....upper and lowercase at the same time. One favorite is the walmart game. I have bean bags with letters on them. I pretend they are my kids and I'm the teacher. I hide the bean bags all over the playroom. Then I pretend like I took the kids on a field trip to Walmart and they all ran away from me. I cry my eyes out and ask for the shoppers to help me find them. They go into the playroom and bring back one letter at a time. They usually have a story....like how that "kid" was riding a bike or playing with the toys. I ask who they are ......(maybe "B") and what do they say (B B B). The kids love this game! I also play games where they have to either yell out the letter sound or name. A favorite is the parachute game. I attach a bean bag to a parachute and drop it down.......someone has to yell out the letter name (or sound) in order to have the parachute open up. Sometimes I do this and if they don't give an answer...they have to run around the couch. I just make up games as I go. Remember....they learn so much more with hands on experiences. I just incorporate letters and numbers in almost everything we do.

MissAnn you have great ideas! If mine were a bit older we could do that. I have a lot of 2 and under right now. Can't wait til next summer when they're 3!

Child development has this recommendation:
First, teach the letters of their first name
Second, teach the letters that do not require curve or angles, E, F, H, I, L, T
Third, teach angles, A, K, M, N, V, W, X, Y, Z
Next, teach curves C, O ,S, U
Last, teach combinations B, D, G, J, P, Q, R

This is very interesting and makes a lot of sense. Thank you! Ironically, none of the curriculums I'm looking at purchasing do it that way.

Are you talking about writing or just learning the letter/sound etc?

I start with the letters in the child's own name actually, as far as writing. Those tend to be the ones the recognize and write first. Then we just move on from there. I don't do it in any set way...they just learn it.

Depends on the year and the kid
If I am starting with a 4/5 yo I sometimes use The writing road to reading.. It starts with the round letters...
If I am just doing letters for them to learn the names and some basic sounds it varies. Some years I follow themes and tie the letters to them. I have done a letter a week.
Right now, I have an almost 3 that wants to know. She knows her first letter A, other kidlet's first letter is B so I started last week at C, and am planning on going through the alphabet. She knows there is an order to the letters so we are doing them in order. I am just going for familiarization at this point. She is my oldest right now.
I think it depends on the kids.

yeah, that is true!
Personally, I always used HWT to teach writing, and a variety of ways to teach reading, and only used that format if I am teaching on the fly (like from "letter of the week".)

I have found the above makes sense if you are only teaching writing letters, but not really if you are teaching the sounds. Some sounds are harder to say, like P, so should come later, but they also tend to make different sounds in people's names, including digraphs you are probably not ready to introduce, like sh or th.

Here is a link to some really cute poems/sayings that help teach letter writing.

Like for "B" is says "B - Big old B has a tall straight back and two big bellies 'cause he just ate a snack!"
