Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Curious State Ratios?

What are your state's ratios? I'm in Idaho and to be honest, I find ours a bit... ummmm... well....

They just changed the rules:

Each staff member can have up to 12 points using this system, based on the age of each child in attendance:
• Babies up to two years old equal 2 points.
• Toddlers 24 to 36 months old equal 1 1/2 points.
• Children age 3 to 5 equal 1 point.
• Ages 5 to 12 count as half a point.

Under the new minimum standards, one caregiver could be responsible for up to 24 children between the ages of 5 and 12, up from 18 children under the old rules.

The maximum number of younger children per caregiver remains the same: six babies, eight toddlers and 12 children ages 3 to 5.

So is it just me or do our ratios here seem... umm... heh...

Or is this normal for most states?

I would be in HEAVEN if I could have six babies per adult.

We can only have four max and that's with only three being under 18 months.

I've read many a state reg and this is one of the most lenient I have ever seen.

I've read that we rank 52nd (after Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic) for rules and oversight.

Crazy!

Ours is

2 infants-24 months and under
6 preschoolers
4 schoolagers-1st grade and above

We can have 10 total but no more than 2 infants/6 preschoolers

If we wanted to do 9 schoolagers and 1 infant or preschooler that would be fine. We just can't go over 10 so it can be different combonations.

Aging out isn't until the age of 13. It seems like your own kids are never going to age out!

I wish we were even close to that!

We can have 6 kids total.
Of those 6 only 2 may be under 18 months.
Only 4 of the 6 may be under 36 months.
There is NO age where they "age out" and don't count as a part of the 6 total.
You can watch 0 kids if you're not licensed.

I think MI might have the lowest ratios of all the states.

edit: oops, only 4 of the six may be under 30 months

Home daycares here: licensed family 8 kids total. Only one provider then 1 child under 2 and then 7 over. If 2 under 5 over. 3 under and 2 over and 4 under 2. If two providers then you can have 8 kids any age.

Group centers use the points system. Each teacher can have 1 point. Birth to age two is .25. 2 years old is .167. 2 1/2 years old is .125. 3 years is .10. 4 years old .077. 5 years old .059 and ages 6 and up is .056.
So with that one provider can watch 18 school age or 4 infants or 10 3 year olds etc or mix it up as long as it is under 1 point.

Your system seems a bit high for the infants, and the school age teacher better have a plan!

We can have 10 if you have no more then 2 under 2. If you have more the 2 under 2, you can have 8 by yourself.

You can have 8 total, but a child under 2 pretty much counts for 2 kids.
1 baby 6 2 and older
2 baby 4 2 and older
3 baby 2 2 and older
4 baby 0 other kids

12 total
4 under the age of 2, but only 2 can be under the age of 1 (unless you have a full time assistant, then you are allowed 8 under 2's)
Over 2's are just general population.

South Dakota home daycare we are allowed 12 kids. Of that no more than 4 can be under 24 months. Of those 4 no more than 2 can be under 12 months unless a registered helper is present. We are allowed 2 school age kids before and after school only which could bring the total before and after school to 14.

NJ is total no more than 5, regardless of how many adults, 3 of your own dont count, more do.
I think no more than 3 under 2, no more than 2 under 1

Birth to age 10 is 1:10 (no more than 3 of the 10 can be under 16 months, and they must be walking). Ages 3-10 is 1:12. The total allowed is 12 plus 3 during the school year who are enrolled in at least 1st grade. So I'm guessing that means one provider could have a total of 15 children ages 3 and up, as long as 3 of them are in 1st grade or older. I think they need to re-evaluate the ratios. It would only be asking for something to happen if someone took on the maximum ratio. Oh, and I think your own children age out when they turn 7 yrs old. So in our case, I think we could have 18 children to one person, if you count the provider's children (age 7,8,9), who do not count in the ratio.

I don't live in the US but my regs are 1:5, but only 3 can be under 6 months. There are times when I can have a 6th (when someone is sick and they split up her group, or maternity leave and the group is split, social services child that needs a spot, etc), but never more than 6. Daycare is only aged 14 weeks - approximately 3.5. We have universal pre-k and a December cutoff date, and the daycare calendar runs by the school calendar (ie: I get a group for a year, and they are usually all in the same "school" year). The oldest kids in daycare are the winter babies the year after they turn 3. If they are turning 3 December or earlier they go to pre-k and not daycare.

People complain about the cost of daycare to us, they need to complain to the problem, the governing bodies that make up these stupid ratio regulations. Continuing with these crazy ratios will do nothing but drive up the cost of daycare or close many down. You have to be able to make a descent wage to do this job.

Ironic that the government will not control how many kids an irresponsible person will create while we the working people pay taxes to support them, yet government will limit the number of children an experienced caregiver can take care of. Go figure.

Our state allows up to 8, but unless you take SA it's really effectively a max of 6 depending on the ages:

b) A caregiver alone may care for:

1) A mixed age group consisting of:
A) Up to 8 children under the age of 12, of which
B) Up to 5 children may be under the age of 5, of which
C) Up to 3 children may be under 24 months of age.

2) A mixed age group consisting of:
A) Up to 8 children under the age of 12, of which
B) Up to 6 children may be under the age of 5, of which
C) Up to 2 children may be under 30 months of age.

For me it's a total of 8, with three of the total being school age. The max under five is five total and any of our own kids under SA count the ratio..

That's for licensed, you can care for two children without being licensced

a lot of you have some lenient ratios!

Connecticut:
9 total at certain times

Two kids under age 2
Four under age 5
3 school age BUT only a total of 6 kids in the summer

In the summer my schoolage kids dont count, but during the school year they do.

The fortunate part of the low ratio is that CT will get an average of $200 for a FT kid
