Do you guys teach this or leave it up to parents?

I used to teach all my kids this but it's rarely kept up after they leave here. Parents just buy Velcro.

I teach them if they are interested.

If they don't show an interest, then I don't teach them.

I only keep kids until Kindy so....

I require ONLY shoes with laces. NO slip-ons or Velcro.

NOPE!!! I, actually, ask for VELCRO shoes so the children can master the skill of putting on their shoes. I have 4-5 year olds here who have their parents putting on their shoes for them.

If they want to, I help, but otherwise, parent's can do it. I've only had one interested. I would give her a shoe to practice on when we weren't getting ready to go out.

No I dont teach it and my own kids wear velcro. My gifted 6 year old cant tie her shoes yet. Its not biggie to me. She will get it at some point and until then we do velcro, slipons or buckles.

We practice tying on the board puzzles or the "ol lady who lived in a shoe" block house.
The shoes.....forget it! Velcro! I can't handle the commotion it causes when we're all trying to get outside, or back in for that matter.

I was just curious why you'd rather have laces? Do they stay on better? Most parents seem to stick to slip-ons or velcro so I honestly haven't seen much of the other end of the spectrum.

Velcro shoes here.

PP...I have 4 kiddos all diagnosed (ha ha) as "gifted", and they were all late shoe-tiers.

My grandpa taught me when I was 3 1/2...but grandpa was a very patient man.

Daycare kids...velcro or pull-ons. If they come in something else, I'll give them a pair of my extras for playing outside. I do NOT tie shoes!

Yes. I prefer shoes that are securely fastened to their feet.

I have yet to find a pair of Velcro shoes that don't eventually get dirty enough that the Velcro no longer sticks and slip-on shoes often slip off just as easily.

I think that kids under age 5 are just learning to have complete and total control over their bodies and I couldn't imagine adding shoes that you have to fight to keep on your foot being helpful when mastering that skill.

I have 10 kids everyday. We go outside every day.

It takes me less than 90 seconds to tie everyone's shoes so it really is not a big deal and takes no additional time out of my day.

Especially when you consider how many times I would otherwise have to stop and re-Velcro or slip someone's shoes back on.

I also NEVER allow Crocs or open toed shoes here. Tied athletic shoes only.

Makes sense. I was curious and was trying to figure out how to word that without sounding rude. I was thinking of getting ds shoes with laces since his velcro shoes keep falling off now...so I totally get where you're coming from. All the parents here either love the crocs or velcro though so I really would have convince them. I am still convincing one dcm to get her child shoes...she swears no shoes fit his chubby feet so he wears slippers with these weirdly expensive bags over them...

DCK's can wear any type of shoe they want to and from daycare but if they want to participate in outdoor activities they are required to have tie shoes.

If they do not have them, I will turn them away at the door or call for immediate pick up because I will not stay indoors or skip a walk because one family was not prepared.

It isn't about convincing anyone of anything , it's simply requiring certain things in your program that parents either agree to upon enrollment or they don't (enroll that is.)

I just tell parents that stopping to put shoes back on or waling slow in order to keep shoes on is not very productive and very time consuming so ALL kids are required to have good walking shoes.

...Just like the gym teacher required when we were kids.

Fair enough. I told dcm she has until the first of May to get dcb real shoes. I simply don't think he will be comfortable once it starts warming up...

But anyway...I learned something new today.

Hey, I'm happy if they can put their shoes, pants and coat on by themselves . Nobody comes with lace-up shoes here. I leave that job up to the parents. If they show in interest in tying bows, I will show them how, but I don't actually sit down and teach all of them on a regular basis.
