Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Biting Leads To A Dr. Visit Need Help ASAP

I am new to this forum and hope I can get some help asap

this morning another child walked up to a younger child and grabbed there hand a took a big bite, I immediately tried to get the child to release there bite I have never seen anything like this before.
The injured child is my nephew whom is under 2yrs old, I immediately cleaned
the wound and iced it. sat the other child own and explained to them that what they did was wrong. I called my brother at work and met him at the
doctors office, he is there now they said something about a possible shot, the bite mark is pretty bad, his skin is tore back and was unable to stop the bleeding, swelled up and red.
my question is what should I do? this is the first time the child bite someone
and could possibly mean a shot to a child. the injury is not a regular bite mark you would normally see, looks like a dog bite him. would you kick the child out immediately or give a warning?

That's hard..it's a first time offense I'm guessing but biting hard enough for the child to bleed and have to go to the doctor a.s.a.p....I think I would be having a serious talk with dcp and sort of see their reaction. It would be troubling and I would term if they said that was a problem at home or at another daycare or where passive about it. If they are serious about correcting the problem and appalled at the behavior, I would give a warning that if it happens one more time you will have to term for the safety of the other children. And then I would shadow that kid like white on rice.

I would probably terminate immediately. I understand it was a first offense, but bites are so dangerous. If it required medical attention, then it is a very serious bite. The liability is too big!

Thank You, I was leaning more towards term because of the past experience at her old dc. I wanted another dcp advise before I over reacted. thank you very much for your help

How old is the child who did the biting? Does he behave aggressively otherwise? Was he upset about something?
In eight years I've only had two biting incidents and they were both younger kids who clearly wanted to see what would happen if they bit down on their friends. A firm "NO BITING! BITING HURTS!" helped answer their question. But had it gone on, I would have termed.

I guess if the child has been very good with you in general, I would put the family on warning. He would go to arm's length supervision and need to be with me at *all* times. If I knew my attention couldn't be right on him(using the bathroom or assiting other children in the potty, etc.) he would have to go to the table with an activity until I could be with him. I would use lots of praise for playing nicely, using words, etc. After a week of so I might ease up and let him play more freely but still in mine line of sight only. If he did well we could see about giving him more freedom.

But if he doesn't behave well with you anyway and this is just the latest thing he's done, I would term because of the seriousness of the injury. And yes, a bad bite can result in shots, stitches, surgery... Biting is bad for business

Just saw that she was let go for biting from her last dc...The one question I have is how the parents presented this to you? Were you aware that it was this bad?

I would term immediately.

If the child was terminated at another daycare for biting i wouldn't keep the child. That bite sounds really bad. If I had my child at your daycare and they were bit like that I wouldn't leave my child there again.

At my college's daycare center; one of our professors, who is also the director of the preschool/daycare, said that she once had a toddler that was biting other children everyday and because of how many incedents they reported they were almost going to get written up for not supervising the child close enough. But in the end they didn't get written up because during an inspection (where both licensing and the child's parents were present) the child bit another kid right in front of everyone (so it was not do to lack of supervision it was the child was just quick and impulsive).

Anyway she said she wanted to keep the kid a little longer because she wanted to work on correcting the behavior but licensing told her that because it is hard to predict when he/she will bite and the fact that they bite with close supervision- the toddler was a danger to the other children. So she had to let the child go.

Bites can lead to infections if the bite is deep enough to break the skin due to the bacteria in the child's mouth. The oral hygiene of the biter doesn't even really make much of a difference because everyone's mouth has bacteria (good and bad). lol Sorry if I just gave you OCD and now you have to brush your teeth 10 times every hour.

Sometimes you have to do what is best for not only that child but all of the children.

This is a serious injury and they child is a known biter. You HAVE to terminate. If the child bites again you will be held liable.

I would call parent now and explain the problem and send the child home today.

I do not terminate easily but this was not a normal bite You put your business and even your house at risk if the child bites again.

For a bite that serious, and from a child that is a known previous biter, I would term.
I would suggest to the parents that their child isn't ready for group care anywhere until this biting is stopped. They should get a nanny or some other type of 1 on 1 care.

thats kind of scary that the child is biting so hard. Does she bite her parents too. I know children bite, but they don't bite hard enough to cause damage. I would term.

The child who did the biting has never really done anything bad here, plays ok with others, only bad thing I have encountered is a lot of whining and mine mine mine, her parents told me in the interview but did not go further in detail of what happened at previous dc. she has been with me since beginning of December but dad was home for a month so I didn't have her, so maybe 2 months she has been here and not one bad incident with her until today, besides the usual 2 year old problems.
Now I am new to being a dcp, does the injured childs parent pay for the dr bill, do I, or can the one parent go after the other. which I hope does not happen, because it happened here I should be reliable for it right?

Having gone through the same thing recently (took a child that got kicked out of another dc for biting) and having that child bite a child here 5 times on the face, I would terminate.

If you don't terminate this child you may end up losing your nephew. The odds of the child biting again are high.

I have never had to term anyone its a little scary too. I am going to talk with her mom when picked up, I will allow the rest of the day as she is now the only child here, and to losing my nephew my brother is his only parent and he is very protective, I hope he is not that mad to take him from my dc.
thank you to all who replied I appreciate the help.

The child was under your care not the parents. YOU are responsible for the injury. Hopefully the parents have health ins. Hopefully it will not scar and need plastic surgery. PLEASE tell us you have childcare ins. If not please get some now. too late for this one but aything can happen.

I NEVER say this. But, I am now. I'd term immediately. That's a serious bite, and the victims parents need to know you are taking this seriously.

I guess in a way, it's good it was your brother's child.

I used to be a trainer for physical interventions at a previous job. Here is the correct way to intervene to prevent further injury from a bite:

1) Stabilize the body part being bitten by putting your hand on the back of the biters head gently.
2) Push into the bite (for example, if it is a forearm, push the forearm towards the biters mouth). This will force the biter to open and release the bite.

It is important to never pull away from a bite, as it leads to more tearing of the skin. Bites are so painful, and so prone to infection.

Not always. I've had kids who were injured at my house, and they paid the bills. One girl dislocated her elbow here. It wasn't anything preventable, but her parents paid the bills.

Kids have gotten very sick from being here, and the parents pay those bills too. I don't offer to pay medical bills. As far as I know, the parents all have insurance, so I would probably pay if they asked me. I expect them to pay though..

When my child was injured at school, I never expected the school to pay my kid's medical bills.

No problem! It is against what your first inclination is when being bitten - everyone instinctively will pull away. Put your arm in your mouth and bite, then start to push your own arm into your own mouth against the bite. You will see why it will make you release the bite!

It sounds like the parents hid the fact that their child was a biter. Based on that...and the degree of the bite I would terminate. I use Thomco for liability insurance.

You might have to report the injury to licensing. In California for example, I would have 24 hours to call licensing. As for insurance recommendations, I use a company called "Adults and Children's Alliance" and pay installments every month for a million dollar policy (I think it's $600-700 a year)

If you own your home you may be able to get a "rider" through your home owner's insurance....mine is only a couple of hundred dollars per year for a million dollars in coverage.

Because she was let go from another facility for biting, I would term. I'm sure the other place allowed for more then one offence and lets face it, she clearly hasn't broken the habit if she's now done it again while in your care.

I'd term simply because it's a known issue and it's likely to continue and maybe with another daycare child that isn't related!

I would term immediately! I would not want her around any other children and if I was a parent I would not want my child around another that caused an injury such as this. I agree with the pp that suggested one on one care. I sure wouldn't risk it again. Good luck!
