Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>WWYD?? Second Shift DCK + Visitors?
Breezy 06:18 AM 05-29-2012
I posted earlier this weekend about interviewing for a second shifter with the hours of 2:30pm-12:30am. He is 10 months old. Now yesterday my mom told me she is planning to come down here with my brother (from MN) as soon as he gets out of school for the summer. She is going to leave on the 10th and will get here around the 12th. She needs to be back home by July 1st but is planning to stay as long as possible.

So, this is kind of stressing me out now because if I take on this child we won't be able to do anything while they are here. I will have DCKs ALL day (over 17 hours about) and it will be so cramped and crowded and crazy here.

I was thinking about just letting DCM know the hours will not work out for me but WWYD?

personally, I would just keep him and let the dcm know that while grandma is here, he's part of the family, not dc. He gets lots of extra loving from "grandma x" and "uncle x".

Who wouldn't love that?

BTW, did mom find a charter school or another option for your brother yet?

I thought about keeping him but he would have to go to bed in the itty bitty room that my brother and mom will be in. Daycare kids 17 hours per day and no going anywhere ... We would be stuck at home the whole time and I know my brother wants to do to the base and museums.

They are open enrolling him into a different district next school year!

Could you tell the DCM that you are unavailable on certain days where trips with mom and brother are scheduled? Or maybe tell her that you can't start the child at all until after they leave....

I guess depending on whether you really need the income or not, I would maybe re-consider taking this child at all. I guess I just cringe when I think of after hours care, especially with one so young.....but it might just be me.

Extra help. Hello??? It's perfect timing.

I would just tell DCM that he will be out and about while your family is in town. If that works for her, then I would do it.

Also, why don't you put little boy in your room while you have guests? It wouldn't really be fair to stick them with DCB.

I considered putting him in my room but the kitty litter box is in the en suite bathroom, the dogs and cats all sleep in there as well.

I think im just going to tell her I cant take him. No way I can transport him-there would be zero room for him plus im not willing to give up my time with my family taking care of children 17 hours per day. It will be bad enough with my screamer all day..

I do second shift with a 3 yo dcg three nights a week the exact same hours as this kid you're thinking of taking on. The only way I could do it was if the kid could go where we go, do what we do, etc. If you're having visitors, then they might have to have a background check to even be in the house when dck is there. If it is going to be that inconvenient where you couldn't even go anywhere with the child, then I wouldn't do it. Second shift only works if you are able to get out of the house.

I would not do daycare 17 hours a day even if no one was visiting. You will get burned out fast!
