Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>How Loud Is It In Your House?
originalkat 07:43 AM 04-29-2013
Today has been a particularly quiet morning in my house (and all 8 preschoolers are here plus my 2 school age kids whom we homeschool). It has been so pleasant and the children are all actively engaged. However, on most days the noise level is at a constant high. No one is yelling, but everyone is using a loudish talking voice and when everyone gets together it is SO loud to me.

My question is... what are your rules for loud voices? What do you do to control the noise level in your home?

It is always quiet to medium here.

I don't know why. It just is.

The kids are LOUD outside though.

I think I have just conditioned them from the get-go to be on the quieter side. When a newbie is transitioned in, they take cues from the other kids and are quiet like them.

Depends on who is here. On days/times when I have both pre-k boys, it gets very loud, very fast, and it's hard to keep them quiet. Sometimes I think it's more their very essence that's loud than anything they are doing, haha.

But usually it's fairly medium and rather pleasant. I can't take a lot of what I call "auditory chaos" so I try to reign in the noise as much as I can.

I would say medium noise level here- we do a lot of group activities and they are more quiet, but free time can be pretty loud!

We have 2 playrooms, one is open to the main area w/ a double door opening, and the other is set back a little with a regular sized door opening. We started a couple weeks ago saying that the 2nd playroom is the "loud" playroom so when we play loud games we need to play in there.

It has made a huge difference in our noise level. They can still play all the loud games they want (drums, cars screeching around the car track etc) but the children who want it more quiet for their games can have that too. It has helped a lot at pick ups and drop offs too. We don't have a foyer (boy do I wish we did!!) so the front door opens right into one of our main play areas. With the loud games going on in the farthest playroom it is easier to talk to the parents and not have everything seem so chaotic!

It's usually medium level. Sometimes it gets loud and I remind them to use their inside voices and to save their loud voices for outside.
There are a lot of children here.

All my children are 2 1/2 and under so it can get pretty loud, especially since the infant that I have cries a lot! When the infant is sleeping it's usually a loud to medium noise level if it is free play and if I have some activities out then it is medium to low level...until the baby wakes up.

If I am on the ball and in the room with them it is quiet. If I think all is well and run to take a pee- as soon as I drop my pants there will be blood curdling screams.

We play quietly to medium loud. Some activities are louder than others. If they are engaged in something and the noise level is louder due to the activity, that doesn't bother me at all. Being loud for no reason annoys me.

I have found (in daycare and when I taught kindergarten) that the kids really respond to the noise level around them. If the TV or radio is loud, they are loud. If I am talking loudly, they do too. If I set a quiet tone, they usually respond to that. When they are being too loud, instead of constantly saying "Quiet voice" or whatever, I turn on music really softly and they quiet down to hear it. My favorite classroom get-quiet-quick-trick was to start whisper talking. "If you can hear me, touch your nose. If you can hear me, stick out your tongue,..." The ones being loud start wondering what everyone is doing and quiet down.

We do something like this. When my kids get tooooo loud, we go to whispering. This makes the kids 'listen' better because they have to focus on hearing in order to be able to know what was said.

I NEVER have the tv on, seldom play music in the background. The only time we have music on is during music/dance/exercise time

My group is fairly loud. For some reason, it seems as if they are more quiet outside. I have a few screamers in my group. It drives my dh crazy because he doesn't understand how I can carry on a conversation with all of the background noise. We are working on it, though .

I don't ever have the TV on for cartoons. I have turned on the news before when a tornado watch/warning is around us (welcome to Kansas). However, since our radio quit working I use our Roku box to get music stations. The music plays through the TV. The cover of the album of whatever song is playing appears on the TV screen, but there is nothing to watch.

I have a dancing group. The minute the TV/music comes on, they are all up and dancing.

We learn to use indoor voices. I tell the kids yelling and screaming are for outside, they can be as loud as they like out side. Also running and jumping are for outside, I find the larger the movements they are allowed to make indoors, the louder the volume gets.
We are pretty calm

My room isn't that loud, but I have a few kids who think they should yell everything they say. I ring a bell to let them know they are too loud. Parents always ask how can I stand the noise. My response is "What noise"?
