I have a 11 week old little boy that has been with me for the last 2 weeks. His mom expresses milk and I have a freezer full. What is the average amount that he should be eating? He has been eating 4-6 oz every 2-3 hours this week. I can find suggested feeding schedules for formula fed babies, but I can't find anything about expressed breast milk. I know that breast milk is digested quicker than formula.

Thanks!

You cannot overfeed a breastfed baby so I would feed him however much he wants to eat.

All of the babies I've had in my care, and my DD were/are breastfed. They all averaged 4oz every 3 hours. Some days a little more, some a little less. Breastmilk does get fattier as the baby gets older, so they may never take more than their average serving. It's not like formula, were they will eventually need 7-8oz.

I have an 11 month old here who has been having 4oz every 3 hours since he started at 6 weeks, he's never had more or less. It's funny, I've given him a bottle with 6oz in it, and he will stop at exactly 4oz every time.

depends on the baby though if he is taking 6 ounces he should be able to wait closer to the 3 hour mark. My boys were big eaters and did get up to the 8 ounces of BM every child is different. If the child is draining the bottle and not spitting it up then that sounds right for that child. IF you think it is just a need to suck try a pacifier. Ask dcm how often she feeds at home. it is a good marker. UNLESS she nurses to pacify
