Kids on any sort of steroids are going to have a weakened immune response in general because that is what steroids do. Kids on steroids might not benefit from being around too many kids because of the viral load strain it is going to put on a weakened immune system.

Antiobiotics- are for bacterial infections only. That is not the worst of it.

CDC recently is trying to come up with a program to reduce the risk of infection caused by taking antibiotics that are prescribed needlessly. C-diff is an overgrowth infection that occurs in the gut because beneficial bacteria are destroyed while taking antibiotics so there is not defense to keep c diff at bay. If c diff gets out of hand it becomes a nightmare. So before giving antibiotics always make sure kids are getting good probiotics. Spread the word to parents.

So the question is, do we really need the antibiotics? I believe there is a lot of yin and yang with the body. I think we need to have some faith that our bodies if given the right nutrients, sleep, care, and comfort can heal thyself for the most part. There is increased antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria because I believe it is a compensation mechanism of the body to return to the yin/yang state that has gone awry based on the overuse of antibiotics.

Doctors make me feel that if I don't give my kid this it is going to be awful. Is it really? Lets look at people living in a great biological environment who do not use modern medicine and yet the body is seeming to find balance.

Here is what I wish would occur at a dr. visit.
Get a tissue or cell test that can look at whether the human cells are responding to a virus or bacteria based on there expression.

Then after looking at the response, From there decide if a kid needs an antibiotic. It is the responsible thing to do.

Does anyone's doctor ever isolate and identify your child's viral infection. No it is an educated guess based on symptoms.

Check out research on the human microbiome and you will see that our species has a lot to learn yet regarding medicine.

That being said, we can only go by signs and symptoms. I can only go by my basic observation that when a child is coughing small particles of saliva are being expelled and spread around the environment and if that does not spread around a virus, the snot left on surfaces and another child picking up that toy and putting it in there mouth will. Also, if a kid is having like two or 3 signs or symptoms at the same time.

Despite all of this and my beliefs, I don't want an ill child in my care because they need to be home getting better, not spreading serious viruses around. Overloading a provider with providing nursing care as well as childcare for not just the one ill child but the how ever many other there are. Then you add the wiping, cleaning, disinfecting, provider never going to the bathroom, provider never eating or drinking because too busy, then provider gets ill, etc. etc.

Oh, and don't forget that one parent that is going to come with a well child and say's something degrading or makes a snarky comment about someone or you and your practice to make themselves look better or feel better about themselves.

We don't deserve this get those sicko's out of there and on the way. Sometimes I wonder if the pediatrics office can turn into the excuse to get back into work card and bring your kiddo to daycare.

I agree. On my business page (has over 100 onlookers) I occasionally post articles about good health practices (for sick care and well care of a child) that are natural.

I DO have some naturally minded clients who will try going that route before the strong prescription route, which I appreciate because it results in overall healthier children who have their gut flora still intact since that's 80% of the immune system right there. Wish I had more!

I'm with you as well. I require a blood test to prove the increased wbc count before I will agree to give antibiotics to my kids. I also wait out ear infections and go back for rechecks, since MOST ear infections are actually viral.

On the other hand, I have a bunch of sick kids in care at the moment (well not IN Care, but my dcks are all sick) 3/4 on antibiotics are here and better. The other is coming back tomorrow since it wasn't 24 hours on this morning. The other 4 have pedis saying virus, and ONE is hospitalized, ONE is on steroids and inhalers, the other two are VERY sick still. Wouldn't they do a full blood work panel before they say "it's just a virus?"

I would find a new doctor. My doctor has NEVER made me feel badly for NOT choosing modern medicine and will always support my choice to try alternate methods first. If your doctor makes you feel bad about any of your choices, you should really look into changing doctors. Like daycare, the doctor-patient relationship should be a positive and trusting experience.

Who is going to be paying for this additional testing? From a financial standpoint, it would be cheaper to treat a suspected ear infection with a mild antibiotic verses analyzing tissues and other factors.

Does anyone's doctor ever isolate and identify your child's viral infection. No it is an educated guess based on symptoms.

Viruses are so plentiful that there would probably not really be a feasible way to analyze these viruses.... the educated guesses are the only thing we can do. Everyone responds to viruses/illnesses differently. There really isn't any other way to manage viruses.

Check out research on the human microbiome and you will see that our species has a lot to learn yet regarding medicine.

Which is why ALL providers should have CLEAR and FIRM illness policies that they ENFORCE each and every time.

I replied in blue above to some of the bolded statements.

I take it based on your most recent posts that you are having issues with sick kids in your child care?

This time of year IS hard because illness is so prevalent. There really is nothing we can do other than make clear and well defined policies and then stick to them.

We can't force parents to stay home and not bring their child out in public. We can't ban birthday parties, play areas at McDonald's or shopping trips to Walmart. It simply isn't going to happen.

Viruses get spread around no matter what you do or don't do. Each of us is responsible for how we treat illness and what we allow and don't allow in our programs.

If there was a way to eradicate all the piddly little viruses and illnesses that go around every year, I am sure it would have been done by now. As parents and providers we know the root of this starts at home.

Good nutrition, healthy diets, lots of exercise and good sound sleep.

THAT ^^^^ is the key to it all.

I don't mean testing for a specific virus. I mean a broad spectrum test that could look at a type of human cell and say----yes this cell is fighting a bacterial infection or this cell is fighting a viral infection. By looking at the properties of the cell and the cellular response that is more common in a virus vs. bacterial infection.

Its not that doctors make me feel bad ( I own how I feel) , it is just the convincing, when your not convinced 100 percent.

In response to Blackcat this post is not about sick kids that were were or are out sick now or termed parents. No this post is just me being a nerd and trying to post some information out there.
