Does anyone use Ipads or Tablets in their childcare? Learning Apps like 15 minutes a week per child? I was thinking of using the Ipad or Tablet instead of a computer. What does everyone think? They have tons of learning apps for over a year old and older.

I know that technology is the path to the future and many schools are now incorporating i-pads, i-phones and/or tablets into the curriculum but I personally won't go that route here since I deal with under SA only.

I don't think using any of those devices is cost effective, at least not for me. I couldn't imagine handing a $$$$ device to a child without cringing at what COULD happen.

I know there are waterproof models and stuff available but I think I will just stick to "old school" and leave the techie stuff to school/parents.

Also, I have an issue with the use of any type of electronics with kids under age 5. I personally, don't think the pros outweight the cons.

My 1yo DS, 2yo DCB and 4yo DCG are playing with our tablet as we speak. They are dressing Chika from Sprout. Earlier they were tracing the alphabet. I use it sometimes in the morning instead of turning the boob tube on while my DD gets ready for school. It's protected in a case though that protects the device and the screen. You can drop it or throw it across the room and it will be fine.

We also have an iTouch for the under 2 agers. Babies as young as 6months are allowed to play with it but it's enclosed in a Fisher Price iCan Learn case. The aps are all age appropriate and are educational.

I don't allow them to use the ipad, heck, I have to fight with my kids to use it. Now I have kids who would love to play the ipod, I may have to look into a case for them. I know they would love to play with it.

Thanks! I will not have a TV in my program and I normally am not a big believer in electronics but I was playing a friends and she has so many neat games for learning.... I figured if I get them 15 minutes a week it allows for them to get some experience with electronics and learn at the same time.

Ipad2. Love it. I use it with my kiddo's. So many educational apps. We do small amounts of time on it. Books,ABC's, colors, numbers and counting, music and more.... I too have mine in the best case available.

I was against it at first........and do no TV here- but do videos and not often. My TV is not on everyday and often not at all.

So it can be used by a group of children at one time or do they have to take turns with it? It might be worthwhile if it can keep a group quiet during lunch prep/etc. but I don't think it would be worth it for a play alone thing KWIM?

I use both my iPad2 and iPod touch in my class. Every child has a day where they can play preschool games and my personal games for 20 mins. It has really helped several of my kids with hand/eye coordination. The most popular games are:

Preschool: Buttons and Bugs
Awesome Eats
Preschool 15 in 1

My personal games: Every version of Angry Birds
Where's My Water
Bejeweled Blitz
Mahjong Tiles
Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart

Having this privilege has caused a significant shift in behavior in my class, especially among the boys. The worst thing I can do to them is take away their day.

I guess I would be more inclined to go with the new LeapPad Tablet for kids. In my mind it would hold up better to young kiddos. Might cost more per program or application, but I think the fact that it is built for kids would more than make up the difference. I'm not one to have hundreds of games for the kids, anyway. 10 or so would probably be my limit for them. For my purposes an IPod, while I'm sure they would enjoy it, would be just way too much for this age group. IMO only.

Besides, if I ever get an Ipod, it's for ME!!!!

An iTouch has a pretty small screen so yeah it's pretty much not going to work for you if you want a group to play with it. A tablet or an iPad would be better because as many as 4 can play with it at a time. I usually give the iTouch to my 17mo DS so that the other kids can play with the tablet without having him try to hog it all up.

I don't usually allow the kids to use my husband's iPad 2, but I sometimes let them watch a version of Elmo's Song on it. The technology that I find the best is allowing my dd to use my iPhone to write letters. She is almost 3, and she can already write about 10 letters. It makes her excited to use the technology.

To me, the Apple products would be too expensive to use in a daycare where you run the risk of something being broken so easily. I would suggest getting an off brand tablet. I purchased one for my daughter brand name Coby and it was only $67 (Black Friday Sale). It runs on Android

You can try that or the Leapfrog tablet they have. My babygirl loves it. It comes with games as well.

I have a iPad 2 for myself. I have spread sheets on it for my taxes, everything for recites to keeping track of their hrs. It wonderful. And I say up to date on my taxes. I use some of the learning apps for my oun kids but not much for the daycare kids. That would make me nervous.

I'm old school - I don't even have battery operated toys in our home... nevermind letting the kiddos use expensive ipads, tablets, etc. I don't think they are daycare appropriate and I think it's something for parents to teach/teach with at home if they want.

I use my iPad during morning meeting and small group. I have kids 'Sung to the Tune of...' type songs and several apps that add another dimension to our activities. The kids are not allowed to use either of them without my direct supervision even though they probably know more about using them than me!

Funny story: I was watching one of my two year olds play with V-tech computer type toy the other day and she was brushing her finger across the screen, trying to make it work. Like the iPad she uses at home...

It's the world we live in, technology is what these kids are going to know.

My dd (almost 3) does the same thing. She's used to an iTouch, iPad, or our iPhones. She will try to brush her finger across play phones because she's used to the Mac products. We're a Mac family bc my husband uses Mac to do his job--advertising/marketing.

We got our girls LeapPads this past year for Christmas and they love them. The Apps are a little more expensive than for an IPod or IPad, but we asked for the little App Gift Cards for Christmas for them and they each have $20 worth of games that have kept them busy (Once you buy an App you can put it on 2 Leap Pads )
