Regardless of what you charge teachers, what is your experience with what teachers are like as parents? what about the kids? I have never had teachers kids before but it looks like both of my new kids will be from families with teachers (one family has both parents as teachers)

I have two and they are like night and day. I don't know if you can really label people based on their job choices as such. Both are good people, but very different styles.

One pays on time, every time, always lets me know the schedule, never comes late...etc.

The other never pays on time, always has an excuse, calls last minute looking for care, or telling me they won't be there, and is pretty lax in parenting.

I too have night and day experiences.

1 DCM is a teacher, and even though she has been on the other end, she constantly looks for excuses for her DS's behavior. She never made him take responsibility for his actions. It was unbearably frustrating. When he got to school she, even being a teacher, blamed "poor classroom management" on her sons HORRIFIC behavior (was throwing chairs in his classroom).

1 DCM has a son with pretty significant delays, and refuses to acknowledge them. She teaches early childhood, so she should be familiar with what he should be doing. We had her two older girls, and her parenting style was so much better. DCB is the baby and she babies him beyond belief.

1 DCM is the most thoughtful DCP I have ever had. She is constantly making sure that everything is going smoothly with her child, to see if they need to adjust or change anything at home. She is a FANTASTIC DREAM disciplinarian.

I'm about to head down the same road as you (2 new families, both teachers) so we shall see! Lets revisit this thread at the end of the school year.

My husband is a high school teacher. I think he's a great dad, and of course wonderful to me. He was pretty nervous about a 'baby', as he hadn't had much prior experience... but he is wonderful with our daughter, and she is so excited to see him when he's done with work.
He did tell me about a time many years ago when he substituted for a kindergarten class... he was so lost in what to do, and how to get them to follow directions. I have to admit, while I have a lot of experience with young children, and am good at teaching individuals and small groups. I don't know how well I could handle 25 -5 year olds on my own, even more so when I am only there for a day, and we don't know each other.

I have 2 teachers kids who are awesome! The kids (from 2 families) are well behaved, funny, smart, clean, and very well cared for. The parents are helpful if I ever have any behavioral issues. It's funny, too, because these parents think kids should be kids and should spend most of their time playing, socializing, and exploring. They're the parents that aren't worried about their kids learning their letters, shapes, etc at an early age. They say they have plenty of time for that...just love them and let them learn through play!

I have had a great experience with several teachers kids.

One dcm I had absolutely no issues with. She was super thoughtful and very appreciative, followed my contract and was extremely supportive and in tuned to her kids behavior.

Another dcm was also great and although some of our parenting issues differed, it was not a huge deal. She was wonderful and referred several other teachers to me.

I ended up watching one of the families that she referred and they were awesome too! Never a single problem!

The one and only time that I had a problem was with a dcm that taught kindie and was done teaching in the early afternoon, but needed "me time" to run errands, get her nails done and go to the gym. I never had a problem with her doing this and having her son picked up at my 5:30 closing...but twice I needed to have the kids picked up early at 5 for my dr appt and a family event and she refused to come early on both occasions. I termed her after the second incident happened. She was also notorious for bringing him sick and he had horrible behavior issues that she blamed on everyone & everything else! I don't believe it would have mattered what career she chose...she just happened to be a teacher and would have been a horrible dcm to work with no matter what!

I have had great experiences with them. They typically appreciate us, as they work with children all day too. Plus, they tend to be generous with art supplies and donating toys their children have outgrown.

I know many providers have had difficulty getting teachers to pay for summer break, etc. but I haven't had that happen, fortunately. They have always been happy to pay to hold the space here.

well I dont charge for summer break. I have four kids, two school agers and with going toward teacher kids, I am looking forward to having the summer off. If I need to replace anyone in the future, I hope to find another teacher's kid. I think the schedule of breaks and the early pickups make up for the loss of income for me. I know the school schedules and part of the deal is to pickup after school is out. I contract hours for the teachers and I wont be keeping their kids till close time just because I am open till then. they WILL pickup early!

I mostly take teachers children and I like it....shorter days, summers off, great networking. As educators they do expect their children to learn something new daily. I enjoy educational activities so its not normally a problem. Sometimes I do feel the need justify what we are working on.
