I will be closing at 5pm starting 8/31. I operate on contracted hours. This will affect/effect? (I should know that! LOL!) one family, and I fully expect them to give notice or for me to term them, either way. How would you word this AND include something about it not changing their current contracted hours, it's more of an update on the hours I am willing to work? Every time I type something out it sounds like I will allow them all to stay until 5.

You have contracted hours? Do all families, except the one, pick up before 5? So it really only affects the one family?
I would just address it to them.
As of August 31st, the latest I will be able to care for your child will be 5 pm. I understand that this earlier pick up may not be possible for your family. If this is possible, please sign and return your revised contract by this date. If you do need to seek out alternate care, please let me know by this date.
Or are you looking for something that is geared for everyone?
Please be advised that as of August 31, my hours of operation will be changing. While this change may or may not affect your family, please sign and return your updated contract by this date.
(I would prefill out the same times so that they don't adjust them)

How about something along the lines of
"As of 8/31 ABC Child Care will no longer offer services beyond 5PM. For those of you that contract services after 5PM, you will need to make adjustments to your schedules. For those families with contracted pick up times before 5PM, this change will not affect you."

It will affect two families. One has a 5:15 contracted time but rarely use it they typically pick up at 4:30-4:45, the other has a 5:30 (but it's been more like 5:35, 5:38, 5:45.... and late fees do not deter them AT ALL). I make a good chunk of change on late fees each week. When I was willing to work 6-6, they came at 6:04, 6:09.... so I pushed it to 5:30, and Mom takes a 30m lunch instead of an hour, and they're still late. ALWAYS.
I am taking classes in fall, and one starts AT 5:30, giving me a little wiggle room, it's pushing it with parking.

For the late family, I would be tempted to just term outright. I would not want to be late to class consistently, knowing that they are unable to make it ontime.
Or I would tell them that the latest time I am able to watch their child is 4:30. That gives them the opportunity to make alternate arrangements or not, and will give you a buffer zone. Maybe not pc.... but they would still have until 5 as they are consistently late and it doesn't cause you to stress about being late.

I would tell all families of the new hours. I changed my hours (per other providers advice ) only told one family who it affected. Four months later a different family who was with me over 1 yr started wanting to drop off earlier than they usually did. I told them of my new (4 month old) hour change. They said while in the past they never needed early drop they always felt it was available. Now that I changed it and didn't let them know they would need to find diff fcc. I said I understand & they found other care. Looking back i felt by not telling all families they felt I was being sneaky. I didn't mean to be. I find it's easier to give advice than to take & use same advice yourself. Good luck
