Getting a license is confusing and trying to get a hold of someone from resource and referrals is next to impossible. For the Californians on this site, it says I have to send in the complete application or it will be sent back but in order to make it complete I need the faculty number on some of the forms, but to get the facility number I have to send in the application. Could someone give me some clarification so I can submit my application?
So now my vent I was planning on taking my time in setting up my daycare only now I have to put it into hyper drive as I will be out of a job in less then a month. Yay layoffs and store closers. At any rate I put out a craigslist add to start baby sitting just to bring in some extra money as the website said it could take anywhere from 60 to 90 days to get a license. I have one good lead from it, a single dad with two boys who needs someone on the weekends and some weekdays. The boys are great albeit a little hyper at times but running around in the backyard helps.
Today I received another call for a lady looking for full time Monday through Friday starting in two week and of course stupid me I said I would not be available till at least mid October. My husband was nice enough to remind me that since I can care for the children of one family without a license I should have a least set up an interview and if it went well just quit my job since all I would need is one child enrolled to make more then what I earn now. Now I feel stupid but at the same time glad that my one ad is actually getting some people to call.
Also awhile ago I had asked my mother in law if she would be willing to assist me if say I ever fell ill or had some appointments. I guess she took it as we are now partners and expects that once I have it set up she’ll be there all the time. In addition I guess she told another friend of hers what I was doing and now her friend is setting up a day care and luckily that’s in the next city over but since this is California that means only about 10 miles away. She is helping her friend out and keeps coming over to ask how far along have I gotten and when we are going to get started and all this we we we. And yes I know I owe her, she did help my husband and I out a lot but I can’t afford to pay her for all the time. I only plan on taking maybe 4 kids. That would be all the money I would earn minus the expenses for the daycare. And on top of that she is going through the whole process too and for the life of me I don’t know why since she says she is not planning on running a day care from her home. Sigh. End vent.

It is usually issued after you submit the paperwork and you will receive a letter stating that your application was received. It will be on this letter. After that (it could take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months) for your prelicensing visit. If you've never been licensed you won't have one yet.
I would call and just tell them that this is what you have so far and ask if it is complete.
As for your mother in law, unfortunately I think you'll have to be honest and lay out your expectations now so that there are no hurt feelings or misunderstandings later.

my advice here is to only take the only family that will give you the most money and meets the hours of care you want to provide. If you plan on always offering to work weekends then take the boys.
if you only want to work m-f, then take the full time child.
In CA if you get caught watching more than one family at time, it's a big fine and you may risk the chance of getting licensed all together.
Dont worry about information you don't have. like the facility number and fill out everything you do know or can get the information for. Fill out every single box leaving no blanks. Once you turn it in, it will take about 1-3 months for them to get you licensed. This is saying that there is nothing on your record during the background or no major changes to your house, like having to fence a pool.
I would not advertise anymore until you know you are well on your way. I advertised for one family to start, then after that, once I was on my way and had my visit with my analyst, I had a better idea of when I would be able to take kids. I asked her can I start advertising and she said I could not advertise until I got my facility number. YOu will get your number only when you are approved.
Hang in there....I am sure it will all workout.

I left my facility number blank and got a call from licensing within 1 week after my fingerprint cleared. the person set up an appointment with me 2 weeks later and the rest was history. I guess i'm the lucky few that got a licensing person that was on it. As for your mother in law you really need to sit down and tell her how you feel in a gentle way. just empower her after and she be okay. I don't think you should drag this out though because she will get her hopes way too high.

Oh BTW you could tell your MIL that if you bring her on you will need to get workers comp insurance (this is 100% truth) and its going to cost you. In CA you have to have workers comp insurance of a minimum of 1million dollars and you have to have it for even only 1 employee. Your MIL would count as that one employee....

are you saying that you are going to go to their house to watch them??
If that is the case, then you are fine.
But if you are caring for children in your home, then it needs to be only one family

agree. I was told by my license analysis that I can only watch one family that is not related to me if i am unlicensed. Still, I can't advertise my home unless I have a license number.what do you mean?

Well that's what I've been advertising as, just baby sitting I mean. I just revived a phone call out of the blue asking for full time child care and before I could process the call I said I was not avalible for that. That is of course when my husband reminded that all I need is the income from one child and then I could quit my job (that I am loosing in a few weeks anyway) and focus getting my license and building my business. what do you mean?
