Crazy8 08:16 PM 09-13-2012
if your rate is about $40/day how much would you charge to extend it just 15 minutes for a family??? Someone else is still here that 15 min. so I will do it, but I had hoped to get my closing time down the half hour eventually and now that won't happen. Actually, one of the reasons I took the family was because of the slightly earlier pick up time. It is for true work reasons if that matters.

I'd charge $5.

That's like, $20/hr so yeah. See if they take it :P

Honestly though, for me, I probably wouldn't charge....but I'm a weeny.

$5/day?? normally I wouldn't charge either but I'm a little annoyed that they are changing because I was hoping to eventually get my day to end at the time they had contracted for - I only had one kid left that was beyond that time and all the new ones I've taken since have been earlier.

will be 9.5 hours. my rates are for up to 9 hours (I don't do part time so full rate regardless of if its 4 hours or 9 hours). I already gave them a "free" 15 minutes in the morning when they signed with me.

Unless you are ready to permanently change your business hours and risk losing the family, I would just go ahead and do the 15 minutes since you charge by the day and have not officially let parents know that the $40 per day only covers 9 hours per day. To you, this family is getting a discount. To them, it is just the current rate and they are asking for only 15 minutes extra.

I can see how to you, it seems like 30 minutes extra.

I charge by the day and my business hours end at 530. parents are welcome to use up until the last second but I never, ever extend my hours past that, even if a family had to leave over it.

no, they do know they are getting the extra 15 min. in the morning, I said I'd give it to them at my reg rate and I am still ok with that. Now they want 15 min. at the end of the day too. My rates are for hours between 7:30-4:30 (total 9 hours) so by asking for 4:45 they are going beyond. I do state "anything outside those hours will be at an additional fee" - I just haven't specified what that fee is. I am thinking $2-3/day for the 15 minutes?? When I break down my regular rate I'm being paid $1.11 for 15 minutes normally (how pathetic is that, LOL!!!)

Okay so you ARE willing to do it? and just need help on the rate? I thought you were asking "should I do it or not". I could see how this scenario is very annoying and would charge as much as possible so I guess $3 a day would do it (though I personally would not make any exceptions for any family)

yes, I am willing to do it - although a little grudgingly, LOL! I know they need it and don't want to lose them and I do have another child contracted till 5pm anyway but I have added a few 3:30-4:30 kids and was hoping that eventually I'd get away from the 5pm kids altogether so when this one was a 4:30 I was happy, now that they want 4:45 its still doable but I'm a little bummed.

Hmm - give them an inch and they'll take a mile. Next thing it will be half an hour either way. Careful!

I would take into consideration how much THEY are making for that extra half hour a day and cut it in half. Then figure from there. I'm betting you're going to be closer to that $5.00. At least double what you are currently making for any exception.

I know that something that burned my butt when I was watching a Teacher's child. She needed some extra time that day to Tutor but she paid me my regular rate when I know she was making at least $35.00 per hour for the extra time. It was a win-win - for HER.

I would probably charge $5.00. I have a girl that gets off the bus and I might have her a 1/2 hr maybe and I charge $5.00 a day. It seems a bit confusing though about your hours when you say that some are there to 4:30 and some are there until 5:00 Do they both pay the same daily rate? I just want to make sure I'm understanding it. I am open 7:30 until 5:30 and charge $35.00 for those hours. No matter if they leave at 3 or 4 or 5:30 it's all the same. I would not go over 5:30 because I'm too busy running my kids around

No, sorry, a week :P I wasn't typing my thoughts clearly last night. You'll be working an extra hour and 15 minutes , so an extra $5/week is pretty much like making $20 for that extra hour(ish). I shouldn't answer posts when I have a headache :P

For 15 minutes after crossing time and you don't really want to do it, eventhough someone else Is stIll here, I would charge $5/day.

I think you should go back in to your PHB and define what the charge will be.

I have stated that I will charge $10.00 an hour or fraction thereof after you have exceeded your 9.5 hours of care. Or in your case 9 hours of care.

I also state that if I have to open earlier for you or stay open later for you past my normal hours of operation, there will be an additional fee of $10.00 for each. I will not open more than 15 min early and will not stay more than 15 min past closing.

I would charge an additional $7.00 a day. It's for two kids right?

I would also charge additional $5/day.

I would not do it for less than $5 a child and my rates are FAR lower than yours After hour care is at a premium price.

JUST 15 minutes a day ends up being an hour and 15 minutes a week; over 5 hours a month and 60 hours a year!!
I charge $1 for every minute a parent picks up late outside of their contracted hours (and I don't accept any changes in hours passed 5pm). So this family would be looking at paying an additional $330 per month; finding a new daycare or trying to find another solution.

If you are willing to do it I would say no less than $5 per day.

They already have extra 15 min, now they want 15 more. If their boss asked them to stay 15 min late they would get 1/4 of an hour of pay. If it was overtime they would be getting 1/4 of time and a half pay. If it was after certain hours they would be getting shift diff too. Think of it that way.

If they don't want to pay the $5 per day they will make the necessary accomodations. Otherwise next you'll be working until 6 or 6:30 for no extra cash.

I charge extra for the families who want extra and then when I am working that extra day or hour I am smiling because I just made XX extra. Instead of being annoyed I got used again.

Not if they're salaried. I don't know what these particular parents do, or what may have changed that they need an extra 15 minutes each day but there's a strong possibility they're not making any extra money themselves. I'm not saying that's your problem or that you should work extra for free just because they are but I don't think you can assume they're benefiting financially from this.

Without knowing what you charge for a day or any going rate in your area it's hard to help figure out what would make it worth it. I have four families currently enrolled and I don't have a set so-many hours per day limit. I figure that out when I do interviews on the phone to see what hours they need. I think mine are all here between 8 and 9.5 hours and I'm open 10 so I suppose if someone was here open-close I might add more than my typical rate.

I have all kids here by 8 am. Then they leave at 3:30, 4:15, 4:40 and last is 5:15. But it seems lately like 2 days a week the last departures ask to pickup at 5:30 which makes for a REALLY long day. If I enroll more kids I hope they're done by 5 pm because it really makes the day go better! The old daycare I use to work at before opening my own was open until 5:30 and from 5-5:30 the day dragged on forever!

I agree with this post. YOu give them 15 min. and the am, then they want 15 min. in the pm. What will they want next????

Precisely why I own my own business and I get to make the rules and pay rates.

You also can't even assume they are at work those 15 minutes. I can't tell you the number of times I had parents late- 5 min past close and when I helped their kids into the car or checked my mailbox I saw milk and bread from the gas station in their car. Took an extra 5 min to get milk on my time.

I don't get paid salary. I dont work for free.

We stay open from 5:00-6:00 for an additional $1.50 per 15 minutes. This means $6.00 per child for the extra hour. Some weeks we have several children that stay that extra hour and the extra income is really nice. Other weeks, we have nobody that extra hour and that free time is really nice.

I would charge $5 extra PER DAY for the 15 minutes. If you really want an earlier closing time, you need to make staying late unappealing.

That is what I would do as well. My PHB clearly states that overtime care is available at the rate of $5 for each hour or portion there of. So if they extend for 15 min it is the same charge as for an hour.
