There are debates all over on this one. In math I was always taught that there is only ONE right answer.
So WHAT is the answer to this one...
48/2(9+3)=
AfterSchoolMom 10:23 AM 04-15-2011
288?
If that's right it'll be a miracle, math was never my strong point.
melskids 10:27 AM 04-15-2011
2
totally guessing...
ammama 10:28 AM 04-15-2011
mmm, I get 2.
DancingQueen 10:29 AM 04-15-2011
everyone will get either 288 or a 2.
And both sides will have good arguments for why their answer is correct.
I'm still giggling about it.
I think according to the algebra "laws" you're supposed to add what's in the parentheses first. So then the answer would be 2. It's been a while though, so I could be wrong.
I love math, but I'm a geek that way.

Parenthesis first, then multiply/divide left to right, so....288
melskids 10:38 AM 04-15-2011
i thought you were supposed to go in order of operations, (add, sub, mult, divide) so 9+3+12...12x2=24....48/24=2
but what the heck do i know...its been a long time since ive been in a math class. i cant even help my 8 yr old half the time

order of operation=
P ( )
E exponents
M multiply AND D Divide, left to right
A addition AND S subtraction, left to right

That's what I got too..Then typed it in my calculator JUST to be sure...288 is right!

48/2(9+3)= 288
Step 1. 9+3=12
changes problem to--> 48/2 x 12
Step 2. 48/2 = 24
Changes problem to --> 24x12= 288

I'm down to 2hours/3kids

Quit looking at my paper! (I'm gonna write it with my head tucked down into my elbow on my desk so you can't look.)

Tried to delete, but can't!
ninosqueridos 01:26 PM 04-15-2011
the answer is 2.
I learned "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" the first letters meaning parens then exponent the multiply the divide then add then subtract. Technically the problem is not really left to right as the denominator goes under the numerator. I actually remembered something from school.

Well, what's the answer? I can't wait until Monday, aaaaagh!!!
broncomom1973 01:35 PM 04-15-2011
I say 2, but it's been a long time since I did any math "problems".

I say a well deserved bubble bath and massage. I figure it means 48 handwashings today, 2 blowout diapers, 9 boo boo kisses plus 3 spit ups, = bubble bath and massage.

That would make sense, too...the whole numerator/denominator aaarg...it's Friday. I'll say it's 13,996 if I can go home now.

Google it and you get (48 / 2) * (9 + 3) = 288
Missani 08:30 PM 04-15-2011
I say 288 as I always enjoyed math. I asked my DH and he agreed without my input, but we googled it to be sure. There is a big long blog about it. Everyone disagrees, but the sort of consensus is that everyone gets the feeling that the answer they are looking for is 2, but that math proves it to be 288. They agree that if you use the standard order of operations, the answer is 288. However, if you plug it into a calculator, you will get different answers depending on the calculator. Using a TI 85 calculator (what I have), the answer is 2 and using a TI86, the answer is 288. Did they fix it in the upgrade of the newer calculator? They also show 2 models of Casios, and the older version says 288 while the newer version says 2. Hmmm...maybe not. The world may never know...
We are smart folks, though!
I still love math! This is pure entertainment for DH and myself on a Friday night. (glass of wine included)

Here is a great site for math cheats wolframalpha.com
I wrote out the problem, using order of operations came up with 288. Checked the above site. 288. My math genius son came home from school I gave him the equation, with no pencil or calculator he looked at it and about 30 seconds later said "288 but I'm guessing you got 2 mom" LOL.

I would need a whole bottle of wine to find math entertaining.....

I got 2.
I have entertained the thought of homeschooling and things like this make me rethink it!
