Here's a stark reminder of what can happen if a provider naps with children in care. I'm so glad nothing horrible happened...but this is scary :

What a shame. It sounds like she's got little ones morning, noon and night. It catches up to you.

But.. this can happen to a parent as well. Please safeguard your home with latches so the little ones can't escape.

A friend of mine went into the shower and came out to 2 men banging on her door. When she opened it they were holding her daughter and the one man was shaking like a leaf. They spoke a different language so she will never know exactly what happened but she assumes her daughter got out and was nearly hit by their car.

It seems the child had never escaped like that before. Ladies, it can happen when you are in the bathroom. A hook and eye or dead bolt isn't perfect, but it will slow the little ones down.

(This is from experience - trust me - my youngest gave me a run for my money. We put a hook and eye up near the top of the door. Wouldn't you know my little guy figured out how to take his toy broom and unlatch it?)

This has always worried me. We have multiple latches on every door, childproof door handle covers and a security system that beeps every time a door is open. My daycare parents and other visitors complain about the trouble of opening one door around here and dont seem to appreciate the precautions!

Its because they don't have to go through all of that at home and not realize that you are doing it for the safety of the children.

In a side note, in all the years I have done childcare I've never had a child try to open any of my doors. Maybe because we have a "designated" room for childcare that goes to the backyard and they are not around the front door to notice it. Also, our sliding door is very, very heavy so I know they can't just fling it open-I have to put muscle into it.

We have Doorgaurds on every door just to be on the safe side.

In our state, we can only use a regular lock on our doors. Of course the children can all unlock it as fast as they can open a door without a lock, so as for keeping children from opening the door and going outside, it doesn't even slow them down, but it does keep other people out without someone opening it for them. Our regulations state that children have to be able to open doors without any special knowledge or skill (including a dead bolt). For the longest time we thought we couldn't lock the door at all, but then we asked our state licensing lady about it, and she said it meant we could lock with a regular lock, but no dead bolts or other kind of locks. Whatever happend to the safety of the children? Even with strict supervsion things can happen so quickly!

The reason behind only being able to lock one simple to unlock lock is that if there's an emergency and the adult in the home is unable to get to the door to open it for the children to get out, hopefully one of the children will be able to unlock the one simple lock and so the kids can get out.

I think the main emergency that this would be for is if there's a fire and the daycare lady is trapped somewhere and can't get herself to the door but the kids can.

I guess another example would be if someone broke in and the kids could get themselves to the door to run from the person who broke in.

I have had more than one parent that has had their child escape from their home or apartment.

One mom had her back turned and was doing dishes in their third floor apartment when she realized the child, aged 3, was not in the living room watching toons. She found him down three floors and outside in the back of the building going after some ducks.

A second mom was sleeping and thought the boy, also aged 3, was sleeping too. "Something" woke her and she found the apartment door open. The child was in the parking lot, it was winter btw and the kid was in his pjs. It was 5 am.

Third family, two year old girl, found the child on the roof when she was checked on before they went to bed. She had popped out the screen of her second story bedroom and crawled onto the roof of the attached garage.

I have a VERY loud door alarm on my outside doors, but not my windows, The parents are always complaining about how loud and annoying it is. I just tell them it is for escapees. Wouldn't work if one tried to get out the window though. I feel bad for the provider, it could've happened when she was going potty or in another room.

It could have...but it didn't. It happened because she fell asleep...had she been awake and attentive she would have noticed the child missing and gone after them (at least that is what I would have done in such a situation).

Once, before I did child care, my youngest was napping (he was 2 or 3 at the time) and I was painting my bathroom. I was checking on him about every 15 minutes or so. The last time I went to check on him, he was nowhere to be found. I ran outside calling to him, and after a few minutes (which seemed like ten years) I was met by a police officer!! He had gotten out of bed, out the front door, and down the street in about five minutes' time. I am still SO thankful to the neighbor who called the police, to the police and their lightning fast response time, and for the fact that we live in a safe, traffic free neighborhood. However, soooo many things could have gone wrong.

It scared the DAYLIGHTS out of me.

I think of that day every time that I'm with DCK's and feeling sleepy. I'll do anything that I can do to keep myself awake!

My youngest also was an escapee. He knew where the park was, and when he was about 2 yrs old, he decided to squeeze out through the fence and go to the park. My DH had ran to the store, and I was in the house mopping. My DH came home and said where is he, and I said I thought he was with you. My DH jumped in his vehicle and found him within a minute.

Same DS did the same thing a few months later. We were all outside playing, but the layout of my yard is kind of funny. So we are all in the yard, and DS squeezed out underneath the fence this time. And took off to the park. 2 ladies stopped their car and stood their with him, they were on the phone and in a panic. I ran up (he was only about a minute and a half ahead of me), and they gave me an ear full that's for sure. I felt awful, but i thanked them a million times for staying with him there. Of course they looked at me like I was a horrible person! We live right at the end of a backlane, and he had just gone down the side of the street beside the house. But to them, they didn't know if he had walked a block or 2.

Scary stuff happens, FAST! I literally cannot take my eyes off the babies for more than 10 seconds at a time. Becuase I've learned that 10 seconds is enough for them to crawl/walk from one end of the house to the other. One dcg always is trying to have a bath. She will go into the bathroom and climb into the tub and turn on the tap (cold everytime) but If I give her morethan 5 seconds unattended she will be up to trouble. So my eyes are on her 100% of the time.

Wow - very scary! I'm sitting at work right now thinking of what precautions I have taken and what could still be done to avoid against something like this

I love the alarms on the doors, I think they are great, but I would never put hooks high on my doors or extra locks, I want my kids being able to open a door in case of a fire, or some emergency were I not able to get a door open for them.

We have the alarms on our doors too. It makes a ding sound everytime the door is opened. Although it gets rather annoying, it is an extra safety precaution.

When the alarm company came out to install it, the guy asked, so are you getting this because your house has been broken into? We said no its to keep our 14 yr old teenager from going out! He thought that was pretty funny. It just so happens it is great for the daycare kids too.
