What do you guys do with your small board books? I have A TON. I currently have them on a lower shelf and they just get pulled out all day long. I like that the kids are book crazy but its such a mess. I was thinking about just having a small basket or something by the book nook (right now they're on a shelf by the cars and trucks for some reason). We have a front facing book shelf in the book nook for larger books but the little ones don't work there. What do you guys do with them? I hate to make their passion for literacy more difficult to access but I can't stand having books EVERYWHERE. I'm also thinking of purging my toys and limiting whats available to take out. FOr instance I have a bin full of random toys (Mcdonalds type stuff) that I can't stand! The kids love it but its just all too much!

I took out 2/3 of my books and a lot of toys and rotate them. It has really helped! I think I have about 15 board books out on a low shelf. Ds is just shy of 2.5 and he still makes a mess, but 15 is way more manageable than 30+. If it's hard to put the books on the shelf, then doing a basket would work for a return. Watch out if you have kids who like to dump though.
Toys were the same way. Most of them just sat on the shelf, so I put them away. What is out still seems to just sit on the shelf. Mine seem to play with the little toys a lot. This forum has taught me its ok to put things in storage

I only keep about 10 board books out at a time and have about 2 of each subject (shapes, numbers, alphabet, animals and 2 random). This keeps the clutter to a minimum. The rest of my board books I keep put away and I rotate them every so often.
I do the same with the regular books. I keep a few out that we always use and then add a few more about the subjects we are working on.
I also only allow the books in the reading area or on the couch. No walking around with them or using them for anything other than reading. They are allowed one book per child. They have to put it back before they can get another one.

My larger books are on a rain gutter shelf along the wall.
Only the kids old enough to read/look at paper books can reach it.
The board books are on the same type of shelf but lower down. I only put 3 books per child under the age of 2 out.
The littles DO take them all out at once but then they KNOW they are required to put them all back when done. It helps a lot to limit the number of books you have out if they aren't good at picking up.
My standard rule of thumb is usually one book out per age of child, then add as they get a better understanding of how to care for the books.

I keep them on bookshelves where the kids can't access them. I keep a bucket in the play area filled with 10-15 books and rotate them every week or two.

I keep out about 15 books or so. I have a rain-gutter style shelf above the reading area that holds regular books. It usually only nicely holds about 7 books. Any surplus goes in a bin I have on the floor. The little ones get very frustrated with the rain-gutter style shelf because you have to lean the book against the wall. If they don't, the book falls down immediately. They generally store their books in the bin. I rotate books out weekly. Most are from the library.
