We recently moved from a very rural area to a slightly more suburban neighborhood. We now have a park within walking distance but there are no sidewalks. I'm looking into a walking rope or something similar and there are so many different ones out there--the rings they hold, they kind that cuff their wrists, the vest type. What do you use and what works best for you? My age group is 18months up to 6 years, max of 6 kids at any given time.

I have one where they hold rings but I don't like it. My children are always about 18 months and up with mainly 2 year olds. It seems like there is always one who just doesn't get they need to hold on. I saw one that went around and across the torso that was a rope and could be used for several children. I plan on buying it before spring, unless of course someone on here says they are horrible....

I wouldn't use those here, because I am afraid they'd be dragging each other to the ground all the time. But, here's a link to a cute hand made one.

Basically, she just made these with pool diving rings, and some straps.

Cool. This is similar to the one I have. It was less than $20 new, I don't know if it would be worth the time and cost to make one. It's not safe at all when crossing streets unless you have a kindergarten and up aged group (at least in my experience). I always have one kid (especially when we are in the middle of a road) who lets go.

I have one with loops that they hold on to (rainbow colors) for ages 2-5. The 2-year-olds walk really slowly so it takes us awhile to get anywhere. Longer than when we do the buddy system (each has 1 buddy they walk with). We walk to the park twice a day, but use the rope when we go to the park a couple of streets over for field day.

I use Tot-a-longs. They Velcro to the childs hand and you hold the other end. It prevents them from just letting go like the ropes do. I got mine on Ebay and Amazon for about $5-$7 each.

I usually put the youngest one in the stroller and then have two kid hold on to the stoller and then have their friends holds their hands on either side.

Ok, I'm cheap, but I just use jump ropes. I tie them to the stroller that I'm pushing and the line of kids follow behind me. I got jump ropes for 10 cents on clearance after Easter a few years ago.
