Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Bloody Runny Nose? WWYD?

Hi All

So a little girl I watch came in today and her nose was slightly bleeding. This whole week all of the children pretty much are getting over the flu, she didn't have a major case, but she has been very congested.

So this morning it was slightly bloody and runny, then stopped...then she took a nap , when she woke , my assistant told me her nose was super runny, and she was sneezing like crazy, and with every sneeze a little blood was in the musous.

Would you send a child home for this?

My ds (3yrs old) gets these runny noses like that with blood in it and wakes up with crusty blood around his nose whenever he gets sick. His pediatrician has said that its from sinus infections and the pressure/congestion causes the tiny vessels in the nose to burst. My son was in a public daycare about a year ago and this happened. They called me to inform me of it but said i didn't need to come get him because they see many cases of this when children have nasal congestion. I picked him up anyways, but appreciated the fact that they called. Now when he gets colds I use saline drops to keep the mucus loose and avoid his nose from being to dry or irritated. It has lessened over time. I would call the parent and let her know what's going on. I am curious to see how other providers would handle this, as my daycare is not open yet and I only have had an experience with it due to my child.

I probably wouldn't send home either, would call the parent to make them aware but I bet they already are. My DS gets really bad nose bleeds when he has a cold/congestion so I wouldn't be worried about it too much.

I hear you, my main concern is that it's blood, and if they're sneezing, it's like a spray of mucous with blood droplets. U never know what a kid has, and we have to treat blood like urine or feces....

I agree with Sprouts, BLOOD!

My dd has cronic nose bleeds, usually at bedtime or in the middle of the night. What a mess!!

I think I would call DCP to come get her. Blood is a bodily fluid. Blood is hard to clean up on materials. And if she's sneezing too, she is just spreading all that airborne.

With a super runny nose and frequent sneezing, I would be sending her home even if there was no blood. The blood could just be caused by sinus dryness or irritation, but it's still blood. With those symptoms, she can't be participating normally and is causing you extra work and cleaning. I would send home.

no I would not send home. ask mom if you could put a little vasoline on it. Yes I know any child could have AIDS or Hep A B OR C but chances are slim and I can not panic over every cut and scratch

I wouldn't send home, but I would be likely to pick up all soft toys/items so that blood wouldn't be absorbed in them. I can easily clean off a hard toy.

I would send home only if there is enough blood there that the child sneezes droplets of blood on anything. If it's containable and the blood isn't getting anywhere then I wouldn't worry about it.
