Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Why Are Kids Not Left In Cars During The Winter?
Country Kids 10:01 PM 07-16-2014
All the talk of children being left in cars during the summer and dying started me thinking-why do you hear so much of children dying in the summer from being left in cars but not in the winter?

You can't tell me parents/caregivers forget their children in cars just in the summer time. Are just as many left in the winter but don't die so we don't hear about it?

Anyone have any ideas on this?

because except for severe winter condions they usually don't die in the winter and when parents/providers finally " remember" the kid... they are scared, hungry, and cold but not dead.
sad in both seasons but sad no matter what that an adult would forget a kid in the car

Yeh, it's probably because killing conditions don't usually happen as quickly.
Actually, though the children were safe, there was a case in my town a couple years back. The kids were left in the car while the dad went into a bar. Someone called the cops and the dad was tracked down.

They do. The heat is what kills them so that is why you hear about it. In the winter the parents get back in the car and find the kid still alive and just go home and its not reported.
I live nearby relatively new casino. Parents leaving kids in the vehicle unattended (on purpose for hours) is a real problem. They have had so many cases of unattended kids in the parking lot that the casino had to set up a walking security detail so that they can walk thru the parking lot and actually be able to look inside each vehicle to spot children. The story usually goes like the parent only meant to run into the casino to play a few hands of a game but got caught up in the game and before they know it 5 hours has gone by.

What I always wonder is why the parents don't just leave the ac on.
I know sometimes the kids are left by accident but a lot of times they do it on purpose. Why not leave the car running?

I read somewhere that even when the ac is left on, that when the car isn't moving, it can still get pretty hot inside. Plus the child is usually strapped into the car seat which makes it hard for them to regulate their temperature.

Heat and the fact that when it gets hot everyone seems to go out. In the winter more people tend to stay in.

Looks like a business opportunity-onsite daycare. $5 per hour per kid, and because the parents are on the premises, in my state it would be license-exempt.

Take a copy of DL when they come in, give kid and parent matching ID tags, and have them pay in advance.

I guess the only issue could be if the parent has one too many cocktails.

Here when the temps get extremely cold, they leave their car running....even when inside shopping.

Carbon monoxide is what to watch out for in the winter. A boy died last year while in the car and dad was shoveling the driveway- the pipe was clogged with snow
