Sunday evening. Dcm texts that dck is sick and wants to know if other kids have been sick.
..
First of all its Sunday! So she is NOT getting a response today.
Second of all why does it matter If other kids have been sick? To me this is like insinuating that dck could only have gotten it from here. I haven't even seen the kid since Thurs
LOL
Some people....

"Nope. Thanks for letting me know. I will let the other parents know since he was with them on Friday. Don't be upset about him exposing the other kids. It happens. You didn't knowingly send him sick. It's not your fault they were exposed. "
When she says he hasn't been anywhere else but daycare so she doesn't know where else he could have gotten it say "I can't answer that for you but I will be able to answer that question for the other parents if their kid comes down with it."

I'm so twisted that I kind of want a DCP to ask, just so I get to say this!

I have said this (or a version of it) several times. They stop asking that question pretty quickly.
The first few times, I tried to explain how germs work, but gave up. Simple is better.

My new answer for this question!

I had this exact same thing happen 2 weeks ago! I wish I would have been quick witted to throw that response out!!!! The kicker....they were on vacation the week before and I still got the "they haven't been around people" ummmmmm......ok

I always say no, no one else is sick. (unless something highly contagious and dangerous is going around). I am not going to be blamed for every cold and whatnot. I respond similar to Nanny. It confuses them lol

Putting that in my mental rolodex.
If no other child has been sick I tell them, "No, so it is likely that they got it from a place visited like sunday school class, a shopping cart, a playground, a play date, etc. Hope they feel better soon. I will notify the other parents." I RARELY have a parent say this more than once or twice since that is always my answer. But, I like nanny's better.

I have a parent who ALWAYS asks me this when her child is sick! Now I know what to say, if only I had the guts...lol
Shell 07:44 AM 08-11-2014
I have one (a nurse of course) that asks this all.the.time. It really ticks me off

Yep, mine are always health care workers and their kids are always the sickest.

Maybe because they bring it home from work

I don't know for sure about your dc parents, but the ones I have that work in health care pretend not to know when their kid has something serious. Dcg had hfm once, roseola another week, a cold, etc and dcm kept trying to blame here, even though her child was the only sick one. They know darn well when their kid is sick and contagious, but play dumb.

Nah, it is because they (we) are desensitized to it. If it is not on the "notify CDC" chart, they don't even register that the kid is sick. It is not on purpose, just way too common in their world.
Leaving a patient in danger of cardiac arrest for a child with fever and diarrhea does not pass the sniff test in most other real world situations.
Use the words "lethargic" "sad" and "crying for mommy"

Love it!
I'm usually proactive when I notice someone getting a runny nose and will tell the parents "_________'s nose started running today. I don't know if it's a cold or allergies... No one else here has a runny nose."

Sometimes a parent will ask me this because they want to know what their child might have come down with. For example, if their child has a rash and there are 2 other kids who have had HFM, it's likely that's what their child has. Or.. if another child is out with Strep and their child is complaining of a sore throat, they may bring the child to be checked sooner than later so I get why some parents ask the question.
I have had parents, though, who were looking to blame someone for their child's illness and whenever I get a sense that that's why they're asking, I tell them, "No, no one else is sick yet but I suspect that's about to change soon!"

I send out a notice to all parents when a kid comes down wit strep/flu/HFM/etc. With symptoms listed so they can be on the look out in their own child. It has proved helpful SO often.

I agree. And s a mom, I would appreciate that type of heads up too.

Yeah, I do the same thing and it really does help. There's always someone in the group who doesn't quite trust that I'll give her the heads-up, though!
(...or who's looking for someone else to blame.)
