We had to replace 80 ft of fencing on the side of our property. 50 ft of the fence is in the yard were the kids play. Is this part of the entire home repairs deduction?

Also, we had problems with the installation and had to hire another person to fix the job the first installer did. Can we use both charges?

Thanks,
Jim

You can deduct this in one year and don't have to depreciate it. Add up all the costs for both installers and include both charges. How much of the cost can you deduct? The conservative answer would be your time-space%. If you don't have young children of your own, or your licensor said you must fix the fence, then you could take an assertive position and deduct 100% of the cost of the 50 feet and the time-space% of the rest of the fence.

Thanks Tom,
We don't have any children, so I'm taking the 100% on the 50 ft and the percentage on the remaining 30 ft.
