Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Forum Member "General Location" Idea
Michael 02:54 PM 02-07-2013
Interesting that I always check IP locations of potential members, being that when I find a Pakistan or China IP I usually delete the account, I see that many members are close to each other. By close I mean within a 30 mile radius.

I wonder if it would be advantageous for members to post City/State location on their accounts. (Currently I only place state) I know some don't want this but for those that do I suggest you do so. I know some of you have tried to create a "meet up" with other members for breakfast or coffee and I think this would foster it.

What do you think? I will place a poll for fun.

Well thank you. I stopped drinking coffee and no more sugar. Just use honey in my tea. Not easy!

Another idea on city/state is creating a State social group that is private and by invitation only. If I see someone is from New York, I can send them an invite to that state's social group where they can meet other providers from their state if they choose to accept the invite.

Just wondering Michael, but don't we already have the option of listing our location? Do you mean you would automatically add the location when members sign up? I list my state, but was considering removing it, for privacy reasons.

OK, that sounds like it would be a good idea!

I like that!

I became friends with a provider off of here that lives less than 5 miles away, which is really amazing since we live in VERY small communities!

I'm undecided as well. I chose "no", but I am not completely sure.

I'm curious though... How does our IP location tell you how close we are to one another?

I do believe I saw someone posting once that she was visiting family within a few miles of me once. She was in my old neighborhood in fact. But, I think she was only visiting.

That would be good. My state is unique for daycare because of laws and climate, and nobody else shares our particular issues.

Yes, but now when someone signs up I do an IP lookup and place the state only. I think it gives members a sense of where they are in the country to each other.

The IP for me here shows that I an in LA which is really 20 miles from Moorpark. City IP would be mostly the "general area". I live in Moorpark and that city never comes up in an IP search for me.

Exactly the reason for the idea. There are general daycare related topics for all of us and also specific state/county topics for others. I think it empowers providers in an area who are likeminded.

I don't mind my state being listed but would prefer that my city is not.

I definetely think that if you did do city and state to put an option of having it available only to Daycare.com members. I think the threads should also have an option when it is only availalbe to daycare.com members too because some times some of the providers have problems with particular families and are afraid that the parents may see their post and beable to identify them by their location and familiarities in the story.

Another thing you can do is do county and state

The "Off Topic" section is members only.

I like the social group idea. While I don't necessarily mind members knowing where I am from, I don't like the idea of it being associated with every post I make.

I'm not sure how accurate the whole IP address location thing is - every time I look up mine it shows I'm in Naperville, which isn't really close to me.

I like both these ideas. I wouldn't want city, but I think county is fine.

I prefer state only. But would rather just have country.

I'm ok with putting my province but I'd rather not go any further than that.

EDIT to add that I know how to put my location on and have, up to this point chosen not to.

I have found people in my general state/area just by how they write sometimes about things going on in the state/area or how they word it.

I have just pm'd them and we end up talking that way.

I think even if its in a members only section there would still need to be some sort of big trust between the providers.

I like this idea alot too, but would rather remain an anonymous poster due to lurking parents and my small community. Maybe state would be fine though.

I like this idea because it gives us some anonymity from outside sources. When I go on the occasional rant, I don't necessarily want everyone from the outside to know it is me.

I like the idea too. Tea drinker here too Michael....sometimes organic turbinado sugar (I know it's still sugar) or honey.

I think it would be great if only members could see that information, same with profile photos. I had all of those things listed at one time but realized that there are some things I might not want a parent to read because they could take it the wrong way.

Non members can NOT see profiles or social groups/pictures. Log out and try it.

While I agree with you 100%...it doesn't stop a parent from signing up and put 2 and 2 together.
