Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Potty Training And Going Outside-Story And Opinions

I have an almost 3 yo dcb who is potty training. Well today it's scorching hot out so I got the wading pool and sprinkler out and they had a blast. When we are done, I always change the kids back into their clothes outside. I was changing the dcb who is potty training when he said he had to go pee. So he rans out into the yard and peed! Then my ds who just turned 2 and is now exploring potty training, takes off and goes and tries to pee in the yard! I went to get him and he ran around our fire pit saying "pee" and stopped and tried again. It was so funny to me, seeing their little bums running around the yard (my yard has a privacy fence so no one else could see them).

I also have another newly turned 3 yo dcb who is at the end of potty training and his mom lets him pee in their yard outside so he does it here. I think the other kids have seen him do this (he does it without warning) and maybe that's why they did it.

I don't really see a problem with this, but I also have only potty trained one other child in my home since I've been open and he didn't do this and when I worked at a center only one boy tried this, but of course we couldn't let him. Even if I have them try before we come out, they always seem to want to go all the time when they are training! My dd never wanted to go potty outside.

What is your opinion on the boys going to the bathroom outside? Like I said, I don't really mind it, but I wonder how other people see it.

(It does make it easier rather than trying to get four to six 1-3 year olds inside so one child can go to the bathroom).

Well, 12 years ago, before I moved out of the city, I might have been a little weird about it. Having lived in a rural area for so many years, it doesn't faze me in the least. I guess it depends on where you live.

Might not go over so well if they do it at someone else's home or a park. I figure potty training involves knowing where one is expected to go, and being able to hold it long enough to get there Now when they are a bit older and say we were camping or out in the woods or something sure. When in the training process I think it may confuse them bit.

I don't know if your liscensed or not but here that would be a HUGE no no.

I'm sure they area they went to the bathroom would have to be sterilized and cleaned no different then if they were in the house and had an accident.

I think its a bad habit to get them into.

I agree.

If it is THEIR home there aren't any regulations. If it is MY home, there are 200+ pages of them.

Since I work at a center, it's a no-no.

But I let my 4 year old boys pee in our backyard if they have to go and we're outside.

We go hiking a lot and they do pee in the great outdoors. Since they're getting older, we are teaching them to do it discretely- making sure they aren't overlooked or there are no other hikers around.

as a mom and as a provider I don't want to let children to pee on place where they and others children are playing.

I see what you are saying.
Wow 200+ pages! MI has a whopping 16 pages in our Licensing Rules and Regulations book. I feel like we have the most lax rules of any state.

Well, they peed in the bushes in the back of the yard where the children don't play.

That sounds relaxing compared to what they are here LOL!
I really don't CARE if a kid pees in a bush. Truly, I don't. But, I also can't go around breaking regulations so I do what I need to do.

personally, I wouldn't care. I was raised a farm kid so I have done my share of whizzing in the weeds... However, I try to avoid it during daycare hours. - I meant for the kids, not me... well for me too, I guess...

Oh boy, never mind...

I try hard not to teach or allow the DCK's to do anything they could possibly receive jail time for later.

As a country gal ~ we are all pretty skilled at using the great outdoors as a restroom.

My little guy goes outside all the time, he thinks it's fun, and it doesn't bother me.
When daycare children are here though, I have him go inside instead. I don't have any boys that are potty training right now, but if I did, probably wouldn't allow them to go outside, (unless it were an emergency) only because I'd wonder what the daycare parents would think if they heard.

It doesn't bother me. Potty trainers are famous for it hitting them at the last minute. Not saying I would teach them to do it, but I wouldn't make a huge deal of it either. It happens lol.

I have all girls right now.
I have thought about bringing in a porta-potty though! It's so exasperating when you go through the whole line-up of changing diapers and pottying, then you're not outside 5 minutes, then either someone has to go back in to pee or you smell poopy diapers. Happens every single time we go outdoors, I swear.

Yeh, if I did have potty training little boys, I'd be worried about the news going back to dcps that little Timmy went pee outside. Cause you *know* they'd tell all at home just like they come to daycare and tell us their daddy peed outdoors. Like I really needed to know.

Not to get off topic but-
is that the hard copy 2009 book you're talking about? It's a bit longer now!

Oh yeah, the technical assistance manual is long, but the actual Licensing book that we have and that we have to give to parents is only 16 pages.
