Default WWYD- sick policy

Ok so first off my sick policy is this ::

Sick Child. Maryland law prohibits me from caring for sick children. Therefore, you may NOT bring your sick child to my Home for care. If you give your Child medication to reduce a fever or mask symptoms of illness and bring the sick Child to my Home without telling me about the medication, you will be violating this Agreement, and I will have the right to terminate it immediately. If your child becomes sick while in my care, I will call you, and you must pick up your child promptly. I will keep your sick Child separated from the other children in my care until you arrive. After any illness, your Child must be free of all symptoms (not just fever and vomiting) for at least twenty-four (24) hours before returning to my Home. After a serious illness, your Child will be allowed to return to my Home only with written permission from the Child sí physician. If your child is put on antibiotics they must wait 24 hours before returning to care. It is your responsibility to find alternate care for your sick Child and to notify me when your sick Child will not be present in my Home on a scheduled Child Care Day. Please inform me of any contagious illness so I may alert the parents of other children exposed to you Child. The definition of a sick child for the purpose of this Agreement shall be a child who has a fever (100 degrees F. or above), vomiting, diarrhea, a runny nose with thick, discolored discharge, a rash of unknown cause, severe pain, extreme listlessness or other dramatic personality change indicating the child is not well, or any other symptom of acute illness, serious transmissible infection or communicable disease.

Now I had a kid kept home today because DCM thought he had chicken pox. He was apparently miserable all weekend and started getting random spots that she was sure was the pox since 10 days ago he had been vaccinated and one was the chicken pox vaccine. Now she just sent me a text saying that it "is a reaction to his vaccines. He is ok to come to daycare tomorrow. I have a note." My immediate reaction is not to allow him to come back because he has to be free of all symptoms for 24 hours. And if she thought he had chicken pox because of the vaccine, and then he is actually having a reaction to the vaccine, what is the difference? Is one not contagious? This is also my "clinger". If he is upset in any way HE FLIPS out. Like hyperventilates if you set him on the ground, screaming, flailing; Its miserable. So since this isn't technically an "illness" but just a reaction, do I still stand by my policy?

"I'm glad to hear it's not chicken pox! He will need to remain at home until he is symptom free for a full 24 hours, as my policy and Maryland law dictates, before returning to care. I hope to see him on Wednesday!"

I'd ask DCM how the child is behaving.

I'm also curious to EXACTLY what the doctor's note says. Just that child can return to care or does it specifically state what he does and does not have or just that they are unsure and simply guessing?

If you do except him back into care, I would do it with the agreement that should he be extremely "clingy" or whiney, that you will call mom for IMMEDIATE pick up.

That's a tough call. I require 48 hour exclusion after ALL immunizations to avoid any reactions on my watch. I just can't go there.

I think this is when it is a tough call. "Symptom free" for 24 hours would mean (to me) that all spots and signs of reaction need to be gone for 24 hours before returning.
I would probably ask the mom what the note says. If it says this is just a reaction to shots, he would need to stay home until symptom free. If it says he can return to daycare, then I would let him return, with a reminder to mom that if he is acting more clingy, whiny, lethargic ...than normal, she will be getting a call for immediate pick up.

I'd ask he stay home until symptom free as a vaccine reaction 10 days post sounds a little strange to me? Of course not impossible. Just strange.

I haven't seen the note. I told her that he had to stay home until he is symptom free. I have his sister today and mom said when she dropped him off at great grandmas today he SCREAMED and SCREAMED. She is not apparently rocking him so he stays calm... I can't just sit and rock him all day. At first she said she didn't notice as many spots on him today and then immediately said "well I actually don't think I noticed hardly any spots". But he is in the process of cutting 2 teeth right now so I know he is going to be fussy no matter what. The dr said that it can take 10-14 for them to have a reaction to the vaccines (which I had never really heard before) But he showed symptoms on the 10th day on the dot so I guess its plausible... I'm sure he will be back tomorrow and I'm sure its going to be a rough day but its the last day of the week so I don't really care. lol
