Do yourself a favor and say no. You are closed. If you open just for them the possibility of resentment and regret is there. Please. I found my backbone due to the wonderful ladies on this forum and I promise you can too! It gets easier the more you use it...and it's totally worth it for preservation of sanity!!!

I love the pic, made me laugh. I want to say no. They just started and so far last week I had to send them home for being sick and now this week I am closed for 2 days. I guess even if they went to a daycare center they would being paying for all week and they for sure would not take them friday.

The fact that they just started REALLY means you need to stick to your policies!!! Believe me, you will be glad you did.

Totally agree! Set the tone now or you will regret it later.

I made an 'exception' because I felt bad... now they're not paying for ANY Holidays, even though they signed the contract saying they would, now commencing awkward conversation, ugh! Seriously, go to a movie? Um... nope! They need to spend some time with THEIR Child, you're giving them a GIFT

Not your problem.
If you start letting them come on your PAID HOLIDAYS OFF... don't think for a moment they won't ask every single time.

It's times like this you want to say "No. It's a PAID HOLIDAY. Meaning you pay but I'm CLOSED. 'Closed' means 'not open'".
But I would never say it aloud

If they are going to a movie they already have the day off. They can ask family or pay a babysitter for the few hours they are at the movie just like they'd have to do at the weekend.

As providers there are perks and sacrifices to our job just like theirs. They chose a job with no paid holidays and they chose to sign a contract paying you paid holidays. Their choices are their responsibilities.

In the future you could average out the cost of holidays over the other days of care and not charge for holidays so they appear unpaid but you would make the same $ over the year.

Stress that this is a day you spend with YOUR family and tell them that you hope they can find someone else. They should be the dcf that knows your policies the best, since they just started.

No!!!

Make sure you have a contract, handbook/rule/policy book and clearly go over your rules on interviews. Leave no room for this poo-

Days off are far and few between, enjoy them and get paid for them and don't think twice.

Just tell her, No, it is a paid holiday for me. Please don't ask me this again. It puts me in an awkward place to have to tell you NO-

The nerve

I would simply say, oh I"m sorry since I have the day off I have made plans already. If you say you're going to check with hubby you might get into trouble because they're going to ask again if you're not firm. You can't use that line every time. You're just going to have to flat out say no. The way I look at it, if they're not afraid of upsetting you by asking, then why should you be upset by saying no?

the more you give to the daycare families, the less you have for your own family. If that doesnt give you a kick in the bum to say no, I dont no what will. If you cant say no for yourself, say no for your family! They need time with you without other peoples kids around. I can guarantee that "one movie" will turn into a movie plus a meal plus Christmas shopping. you WILL have these kids all day. Dont do this to yourself! They knew your holiday and sick policies coming in so you have nothing to feel guilty about!!!

I've found that lately I'm already shaking my head no before they even finish asking the ridiculous question. I can't help myself.
