I have a new little boy, 19 months, this is his 5th day. He was wonderful M-W, napped great, on a mat, ate well, played well. Yesterday, he was miserable from 10am-nap, slept well, and then cried from 3:30-pick up. He is congested, but no fever, and not enough snot to exclude, he was falling asleep in my lap when his mom got here at 5. He did have some loose stool this morning, I don't know him well enough to know if that's normal.

Today, he was been horrid. He's been pushing the older kids, snatching from the babies, crying all the time. He was hysterical while we were doing large motor play, so I put him on his mat (this was 11:30), he fell asleep. I woke him up for lunch at 12, he cried at the table, but did eat a bit. At story time he sat with the million mile stare, until I put him down for him nap. He has been screaming since. He was crawling all over the nap room, jumping up and down, poking other kids. I moved him to a crib (which will not be an option next week, I have a new baby coming). He is in the crib jumping up and down crying. None of the other 6 kids are able to sleep, they are all up, most of them are crying.

Should I send him home? This is ridiculous! Or should I just keep swimming, since he's new, maybe having a bad day?

I feel awful, I am going to be sending 6 cranky kids home today b/c they are not napping.

I am about to cry myself!!

Personally, I'd call, give Mom a heads up and let her make the decision.

Every one of those symptoms could be related to making the transition to care. The 3-5th day can be weird as they are realizing this is longterm. (oh, wait! Am I going to be here EVERYDAY???)

On the flip, it could be the beginning of illness... At least it is Friday...

Definitely been there! Same with no one getting a nap, frustrating doesn't cut it! In my case it got better but took a long time, now she's one of my best kids.

May just be all the adjustment for him. Is it his first time in daycare?

I've had kids that are great the 1st week bc it's all new and fun then horrible the next week before finally adjusting.

I hope it gets better

Thank you both. He was in a center previously, but DCM is pregnant, and can't afford to pay two kids at the center, so they made the switch to me as soon as I had a spot open.

Every time I have taken a kid from a center, I regret it later. I hope he does better Monday...

He could be mourning the "friends" he made there. It may take him a few weeks.

Luckily kids bounce back quicker than adults.

Yes it sounds like transition to me. Also some kids if they sleep at all it totally messes up their afternoon nap. It sounds like when he slept from 11:30 to 12:00 and you woke him up he wasn't able to settle back donw to sleep again. I have a kid also about 15 months old now. If he falls asleep in the morning he will not in the afternoon. He's so cranky and whiney and horrible sometimes from 10:45 - 11:30 but I just push through until lunch or I know I will regret it in the afternoon.

Thanks for asking! He is doing okay. He has definitely warmed up to me, he loves being cuddly and gives me hugs and kisses all day long. He is still a bit of a pill with the other kids. He is a bit of a bully, he bangs his head on the other kids, and is a bit pushy.

I've been working with mom on this, she has admitted that they let him rough house with his cousins, and have said that they are discouraging it now. We will see.

His naps are pretty good. 9/10 days he naps well for 2 hours. It's that 1 day that he will struggle to go down, and I have to move him to another room or he will walk around the room keeping the babies awake.
