Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>No Hat, No Mittens...Sorry But You Are Going Outside
Soccermom 09:25 AM 11-14-2012
So done with DCPS not dressing their kids for the weather!! Or with kids forgetting their hats and mittens at school.
I sent a memo home 3 weeks ago for DCPS to send in extra socks, hats and gloves but only 1 DCF sent them.
Everyday I have to hear - It is so cold outside..I HAVE to come on because my hands are frozen or my ears are frozen. Then I feel mean for not letting them inside.
I have been nice in the past and lent out my own kids stuff but friday I had a DCG tear a huge hole in one of my DD's mittens so that is done.
Seriously, what do they think their kids do all day?? Sit around and watch TV...put extra warm clothes in their bags! It is almost winter for crying out loud!!! Sorry.....just so annoyed.

Send the kid home when you see they don't have the proper gear. No daycare for the rest of the day. No reimbursements either.

The same thing happened to me today. Kiddo came with coat, snowpants, boots, no hat or gloves! Other kiddo came with dress shoes, no hat, gloves. Note going home that they are turned away withot them tomorrow.

Same here. Although I have to say that they all had hats, however they're the "cute" kind that really dont' stay on their head or they spin so the kids can't see. the problem is the kids are so young that they can't figure out how to turn them so they can see. They walk around with one eye showing. UGH Then one dcd brought 1 mitten. Made a comment about how he couldn't find the other one. Oh, thanks, I guess I'll just switch the hands every 5 minutes.

ahh...glad to know I'm not the only one that has careless daycare parents. I still bring my daycare kids outside...it's so sad that the kids are the one's that suffer for their parents ignorance.
I have a family that NEVER brings any appropriate clothing. I said to mom yesterday, "do kids have snow pants?" Mom looks at me and says, "yeah...would you like me to bring them?" Ummmm YEAH DUMB*SS! It is -3 outside and very windy. Your kids constantly complain they are cold which I TELL you- Get with the program!!
Mom brings kids snow pants today and the poor DCG has capri style snow pants because they are soooo short. It was hilarious. I got together with another daycare today and she thought it would be funny to take a pic and post in here but DCG took them off before I could snap a pic. Tomorrow maybe
Oh and to top it off they didn't come with boots. Instead, DCG came with dressy Mary Jane shoes and DCB came in little runners.
Great job mom!

Grrrr...Why do some kids have parents? lol

It was 30 degrees this morning. Had a kid come in a summer sweater and a tshirt.

Seriously. Just because you choose to run around naked during the winter doesn't mean we can let your kid do it. just leave the coat in their blooming cubby.

Exactly why I sent home a note one month before the weather even thought about getting cold setting a deadline for winter gear to be brought/worn. The gear must either be put in the cubby or brought every.single.day or the child will be turned away. I'm not flexible when it comes to children's health.

10 of my 12 have their big coats, extra socks, gloves, and hats here in their cubbies. The other 2 bring them daily.

Now, as for PANTS. Some of my kids are coming in pajama pants (the thin cotton kind) or leggings even when it's 40-50* out in the morning.

I have also given the issue back to the parent. If we are getting ready to go outside and someone does not have all the required outdoor gear, I call their parent to pick up.

RARELY do parents forget more than once.

I also talk with the kids old enough to understand that part of remembering all of the necessary clothing is their job as well and they should bear some of responsibility.

guess I am a softy I make sure they are all warm. I have a sack of mismatched mittens and old socks. The first time parents come and find they child wearing old socks for mittens they remember the extra mittens for the cubby LOL

We were outside yesterday without coats and it was in the high 50's! The kids were running around getting sweaty and didn't want their coats. Everyone (friends and such) how we all had our windows open letting the fresh air in.

I was even wishing I had hung clothes to dry but had to leave right after work so I couldn't tak them off the line.

LOL!!! ...and I laugh at you "southerners" who think it is cold when it is 0.

I am 4 hours north of you and for some odd reason, I think it is the rural setting and lack of the big city, it is a lot colder here than where you are at.

My dad lived for many years where you do and I used to love going down for the holidays....it was a trip south where it was warmer...

Here we still go outside even when it is below zero. We do account for windchill but still pretty much play outside EVERY.SINGLE. day. Even last winter when the temps were actually -40F (without windchill) our schools were still open.

O.K...so, I'm not nice. I'm also old... I grew up in the 70s in Chicago. I didn't know a single person in all of CHicago that owned snow pants or snow suits.

We took our gloves off to have snowball fights. (there must have been a reason for that)

We walked to and from school in minus 20 degrees, in jeans or thick tights and a Parka.

If these kids want to feel warm, they can run fast, or start to remember how cold they felt, and tell mom and dad. If Mom and Dad aren't concerned about it, maybe it's not that bad. "Put your hands in your pockets" "Put your hood up".

I wouldn't send them out for hours on end...but, do you think the school kids are sitting inside during recess because they forgot mittens? No. "Suck it up buttercup"

<--20 below zero.. lake effect snow...and we survived to adulthood.

I finally got everyones skipants, boots, mitts etc .
They come with boots but no ski pants. or skipants with no mitts or boots.

I had one dcg (1 yrs old) come in morning with no jacket, or just a thick sweater, no shoes/boots, she has mitts and hat but not warm ones. The mom wraps dcg in a blanket to get her from car to house. Mom would text when she got into the city that she didn't think we were going outside so she didn't bother bringing them. I told her if she doesn't come with them, she will be sent home immediately. It's cold here, we've got about 2 ft of snow already.

I love how one mom made the decision for everybody. Then, disguised it as "I didn't think they would be going out".

I'm with you! We're from Florida. When it's cold or raining Floridians in general just stay inside. We can always wait a few hours for nicer weather to play outdoors. My daughter (born here) runs back inside for a fleece hoodie if it drops below 70* (literally - she was tired of "winter" after we had two mornings in the upper 60's ). It's made it really hard to dress her this month because it's been cold in the mornings (50-60*) but warm in the afternoons (70-80*) so I've had to try to make outfits with layers that can easily be removed and even so my provider and I have been trading clothes back and forth so she can change mid-day.

Sadly enough, I seriously had to ask my mom what scarves were really for. I didn't realize up north they wrapped them around their necks and faces. I could not figure out how a dangling strip of fabric kept anybody warm! I'm still not quite sure what rainboots are for. For the longest time I thought maybe people put them on to walk across parking lots...seemed like too much effort to me when you could just walk around the puddles.

yeah. that day i gave her an earfull. i also told her that very day that if dcg doesn't stop screaming all day long, she's gettin the can. And that she needs to come in wearing a hat everyday because she's had ear infections for 3 weeks. she was even sending her most days with NO SOCKS! so no socks, no jacket, no boots, no hat.

dear canadians

i'm not sure if you know the rule but they (who ever they are) don't recommend that children that are in carseats wear heavy winter coats. Thats why the belts on the carseats are shorter--I know stupid thing. They also don't recommend children wearing snowsuits while in a carseat.

now I have never followed this and neither do any of my daycare parents. One mom on my facebook said that we should go outside and warm the cars up and then bring our children into them. I'm not sure where many people get this info but I'm giving you a heads up.

I think this is an issue for many (NOT just Canadians) and it should absolutely be addressed.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also recommends that 'to keep your baby the safest, always remove bulky clothing or blankets before you place the child in the seat. Then, put the blanket or coat over the baby. You should never place anything thick underneath the baby, unless that item came with the car seat originally — which tells you it's been tested by the manufacturer. When a child is wearing a thick coat, it's hard to tell if you have a good harness fit, which is crucial. A coat can add a lot of slack, reducing the level of protection for your child in a crash.' (http://pediatrics.about.com/od/carse...wintercoat.htm)

Here is a fantastic link (with photos) showing how to properly secure your child in their seat with a winter coat on. http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=29772

I think thats why kids are not coming dressed properly to daycare. Also these are recommendations. I think the problem I have is the part where they say that by having a coat on will compramise the seatbelt are they saying that the seat belt will undo itself because then its a faulty carseat. Also it says that you can put stuff around a child, which is a big no no, and also by putting a blanket on them you can have a child suffercate.

I am aware of this, here in MB there is no such information on it, other than the fact that kids can overheat easily in a car without parents realizing it. I only know the safety aspect of it because of this forum.

However, if you are bringing your child to daycare wrapped in a blanket, I still require a jacket, footwear, etc. What if there is a fire? EVEN if it's a blizzard and we are not going outside, we may still need it.

its not a law its more of a recommendation that maybe a dr is making or a nurse, I don't know who (it was on facebook ) but I'm wondering if this is the reasone parents forget, you know how we get into a car and drive somewhere and forget something at home (it happened yesterday to us)

oh yeah I understand forgetting. But when I've sent out notices, and verbally reminded parents that I need all their outwear it's not something that should happen often.

I'll remember to do this. I hate having to miss outside time because some parents won't properly dress their children *goes through dd's old socks*

Sorry if this was mentioned already.... Maybe you could scout out the Goodwill or a local thrift shop and get coats, gloves and hats of various sizes and just keep them on hand. They're pretty cheap at Goodwill, but you could also ask each parent to chip in $10 or so. It would be easier all around if you just kept a supply at home.

haha.. scarves are fashion statements in my family LOL.. and i thought the SAME thing about rainboots!! gloves are mainly because i dont want to hold the steering wheel right after getting in the car HAHAHA!!!

okay i dont feel so bad cuz im telling you i was seriously thinking "how in the world am i gonna tell these parents we are going outside in 50 degree weather this winter LOL" our winters arent normally long though so by february's end we should be back outside w/ jackets and hats.

Country Mom- I am a HUGE car seat safety advocate. I advise all of my parents of this. How I always solved this is- walk kiddo to car, take off coat, strap in seat, put coat on in reverse over straps (like a blanket with sleeves!) it works GREAT and helps keep them warm AND we get to keep our coats warm for when they get out of the car. I have 1/2 my dcp's using this technique now.

I just gave up on parents dressing their kids warmly for the winter.

I keep a small backup stock of hats, gloves, and warm jackets for those parents who forget or dress them in light jackets only. I remove the borrowed clothing from the kids before they leave- they are not allowed to leave with my stuff on! It was actually no extra expense for me since I just saved some of my kids' stuff that they outgrew. I am so glad I do it this way- it takes all of my stress away about the issue!!

Lol I have family in FL & when my son was a few weeks old (he was an October baby) my FL family called to let me know that they had sent a box of clothes for him. They also told me a big poofy thing was in there & that it looked warm but they didn't know what it was called. When the box arrived I saw the "big poofy thing" & had to call & let them know it was called a snowsuit.

I just had to write a note to remind our parents (preschoolers) that we will still be going outside every day so they need to leave a hat and a pair of gloves at day care. I can't wait till it snows. We had very little snow last year which is extremely unusual. I am in western New York, about 15 mins from Canada.
