Daycare and Taxes>The Cost of Mailing Things to a "Daycare Penpals"
Abigail 06:21 PM 01-15-2013
Can we claim any of the cost of mailing things to a "daycare penpal" if we have a daycare provider friend in another state that we mail things to teach the kids more about other places? For example: Being mailed sand from someone on the coast to someone in the north? Mailing leaves from my daycare to another daycare that doesn't have fall colored leaves or trees like ours?

You are entitled to deduct "ordinary and necessary" expenses for your business. This means "typical" "helpful" "appropriate" or "useful." While your expenses are not typical, they are certainly helpful and useful. Since the items you are mailing are used in the business you can deduct the costs associated with it: mileage to the Post office and the postage.
