Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>He Bit My Child!!!!!!RANT

I am furious at the moment! I have a new DB who started on Monday. Since then he has terrorized every child I have in care. He pushes, grabs, hits, yells, steps on, and now bites (he bit my 2yr old son until he bled). This wouldn't be a big deal if he wasn't 42 lbs at the age of 2yrs old and 1 month. Like seriously he is huge and he is only a baby but he is proving to be a dangerous baby!!

He is picking on my son bc my son is the only one crazy enough to fight this little boy back. All of the other children are so frighten by him.

I don't know what to do. I don't want to term him but he needs someone to constantly monitor him and I don't have the manpower to make that happen. We do time outs and separate him from the immediate problem but what else can I do?

I know most of my excitement is stemming from maternal anxiousness and anger but I really need help!!!!!

You risk losing all of your other families by keeping him. I know you don't want to term but that is what I would do! No way would I keep a child that "terrorized" the other children in my care. I do not consider a 2 year old a baby-he should know better than to do these things!

Why wouldn't you want to term?

This child "has terrorized every child I have in care"

I would NEVER risk the safety of the other kids in care for one child, especially a new one that is obviously not a good fit.

I am sorry this kid bit your son. I hope he is ok.

But if I term before my two week trial period the mother can file a compliant with the city and I don't want that to happen. I know other providers who have dealt with complaints filed and it is a HASSLE.

Can you guys offer suggestions for the duration of the trial period. Also the doctor has concerns about his cognitive development. He might need a behavior specialist (which I have done in the past) and I wouldn't mind keeping him enrolled if they provide him services for a good portion of the day. I am a special education teacher and I am use to tough cases but not when a child's life is in danger.

Would a picture of the bite wound and documentation of all the other aggressive incidents not back up your decision to term in order to provide a safe environment for the group.

I think that is the point of a two week trial period ... so you CAN term without notice because you are doing a TRIAL basis.

I would be proactive and call your licensor and tell her BEFORE you term why you are terming.

I highly doubt any governing agency would force you to keep a child that is a danger to others.

I agree... I am calling licensing now and I have taken a picture and gotten written statements from my assistants and the parent who witnessed an incident. Thanks to all who have offered advice!

Good call!

I really do hope this goes smoothly for you! You and your son as well as the other DCK's shouldn't have to be scared of one child.

Hugs for dealing with this kind of situation. It IS tough!

Don't keep this child! I'm guessing you began your daycare so you could benefit your own child. Keeping a kid that is that awful that soon is a total no way to me. And yes you risk losing other clients if their child comes home bitten or bullied.

I had this happen to me as well. I termed a boy after only 7 days because he bit my own ds and an infant as well! !!

A 3 year old DCG bit my son today. No blood, no mark and in the over 3 months I have had her, she has never bitten before. I am not terming her so there are circumstances where I will work with biting.

With that being said, if a child bites another child in my care be it my own or somebody else's, hard enough to draw blood especially a child who just recently started then the parent is getting an immediate call to pick up their child and not to bring them back. I wouldn't even attempt to work with the family.

On the advice of my licensing representative, my contract states that I can term for any reason without notice. That means that when an issue comes up that isn't specifically covered in my contract, I still have an out. You are not required to keep a child that is a danger to others. I termed a 3 year old back in August who was aggressive and swore at me most of the day because I couldn't keep other children safe around him. Just document everything. I write a letter to the parent stating why I am terminating and ask them to sign a copy.

I agree that is what a trial period is for either you or the parent can cancel the contract Do return any last two week deposit

During the 2 week trial period, you should be allowed to term. And anyway how would this hurt you? She can file a claim for what? "My kid bit her kid and was awful to her dck's and she termed me waaahhh??" I mean for the SAFETY of the kids, you gotta do what you gotta do. I'd write a letter explaining it and keep a copy, call licensing, call the city and tell them your concerns and beat her to it. Keeping an unsafe situation in your care is unacceptable.
