But I can't resist. I've been on daycare boards since 98 so it's rare to see a thread I haven't seen before. This one cracked me up.

Question

What is the worst "breakfast" or food a kid brought in the first thing in the morning?

The two that made me go WHA? And made me rotflmfao were... a six month old baby came in with a bottle of Mountain Dew (first runner up) and the winner winner chicken dinner was a kid walking in with a bowl and a spoon. When the provider asked what was in the bowl the Dad said....

wait for it....

SUGAR! .

No need to add in those pesky carbs... just a big bowl of sugar to start your day!

I don't allow food in the house so I can't even come close to those two.

What's your best breakfast evah?

Had a DCM who was CRAZY against sugar of any kind (including natural sugars). Said I fed the kids too much fruit (we have 2 servings per day) and that it was making them hyper and causing bad behavior (evidence shows that sugar does NOT affect behavior-these kids had ODD, ADHD, and were being raised in a terrible home environment). She was constantly asking if I gave them candy, cookies or cake, because behavior was so bad (I didn't).

This mom would bring kids with chocolate on their faces, stuffing cookies in their faces on my front porch (I wouldn't let them bring in food). They went to McDonald's after daycare at least 2 times a week (DCM would announce it to them while trying to wrestle them into their coats).

Really not so out of the ordinary (I have seen lots of kids have candy for breakfast), but it burned me up how she would call me out and blame my healthy meals on their awful behavior-if she TRULY believed this was affecting behavior, why the h-e-double toothpicks was she feeding it to them before dropping them at my house?!

Tim bits (doughnut holes) are a common one here. They can't come in with food, but they sure do come in hollering when they have had one pried out of their hands so they can get dropped off in time.

I would have said, "Well I have to ask...if you think it negatively effects them then why are you feeding it to them before breakfast?"

Sugar. Geez. Mine come in eating Doritos, donuts with artificial dyes in te sprinkles (which TOTALLY alters their behavior for real!), chocolate, etc.

Where I live now, I had a couple of neighbor kids (11 years old) ask if I let my babies have pop... ummm, hell no and they asked why? They said their baby brother is allowed to drink it (he is 17 months) and so are a bunch of other littles in the neighborhood.

Just recently I had a mom tell me that the child cannot have RED DYE at all. I don't serve anything like that, so I said no problem. Guess what mom brought in for the child's birthday treat? Hawaiian punch. I had to call her out! "Oh no no dcm! This contains a LOT of red dye! See? Red dye #5, red dye #40....

Dcg started crying "it's my favorite!!! Mommy lets me have it!"

I just did the eyebrow raise as I handed it back.

It's ALWAYS donut crumbs for breakfast. Always, always, always. Then they won't eat plain Cheerios, are starving before 10. Vicious cycle!

Not to mention the overload of processed foods, added salt and sweeteners completely destroy a normal palette. When we did food taste testing, not a single fruit made it into the "sweet" category.

I don't allow food either & I also make the parent pry it from their hands when they bring it. If DCM tries to throw me under the bus saying mimi won't let you have this, I back that bus over mom. "Mommy has to follow the rules just like us!"

A couple weeks ago a 7 month old had a chocolate pop-tart. I must have had the look of WTF cuz the mom blurted out, "He's teething." O.M.G.

I started eating healthier a few years ago. I noticed my palette changed completely while DH doesn't like a lot of the stuff I now do. Now I can't stand dressings, ketchup, any sauce, etc. And I love things like dandelion root tea.

The very first child I watched was my niece, my husband's sisters child. My SIL is very confrontational and back then I was new to the family so I was afraid to speak up. I watched my niece for free 50 hours a week while I was pregnant and had another child of my own under a year.
Every day my niece walked in with a lollipop in her mouth and a candy bar in her hand.
That daycare arrangement did not end well. Haha. Nor did my relationship with my SIL.

Exactly!!! I eat pretty good and even a weekend with a few bad choices can mess up how things taste for a bit. I don't use dressing on salad, sauces and eat plain yogurt. Keeps the kids from begging for my food. LOL!

I had one DCM who just didn't get life. No matter how many times I talked to her about things she just couldn't catch on. I termed her a few weeks ago but she would always bring her kids with just anything to keep them quiet.

I knew she wouldn't step up and take the stuff away so I would make sure she was still standing there when I took it away and threw it in the trash. I also made it clear that any toy they brought into my house became mine.

She would send the kids with lollipops, gum, and entire bags of goldfish crackers. I had them 3rd shift for a while and she would bring them with happy meals at 9:30 at night. The flip side is that I got some cool toys for free.

So true. My dcks eat tart pie cherries straight from the tree, and the cherries taste sweet to them.

I can't think of an outrageous breakfast, but I had a SA child whose mother packed a lunch each day. No variety whatsoever, only these items:
P.b. sandwich
Corn chips (which she said provided him his vegetable)
Fruit rollup (which she said provided him his fruit)

Donuts or pop tarts are not unusual here, or should I say the remnants of donuts and pop tarts smeared all over face, hands and clothes since I don't allow food brought in. My all time worst was a four year old that on the second day brought in gummy bears and doritos and a quart of gatorade for lunch and dinner "because she doesn't eat the kind of food you serve".

She literally started screaming as we sat down to eat with a room removing tantrum if she didn't see her junk. Aunt Cheri don't play that game!

I told her I would feed her breakfast this one time but she is to never bring her unfed with junk again.
It is a big pet peeve of mine.It doesn't take any longer to grab a healthy granola bar and some fruit.Lazy!!!

I think the worst for me was actually something that I gave the kids.

last easter I gave the kids an easter basket and in it was a lolly.

the next day at 7am one of the DCKS shows up eating it. DCP explains she refused to leave it at home. I had no problem throwin it in the trash...

what is lard? I thought that was a bird?

I had a four year old I would watch from about 5-7:30 two times a week or so. Mom KNOWS we eat at 5:30, but to avoid making pookie cry, she would bring McD's "since she is the only dck here."
I rolled my eyes, tossed it in the trash and dcg had a lovely meal with us as a family. The third time she did this, the dcg walked straight through to the trash and dropped it all in with mom still standing there!

Mom never brought McDonald's again.

Lollipop with a scorpion in it .....I kid you not. You know the ones they would have sitting on the counter at a gas station or something. Moms BF was dropping the kids off and said 'sorry, I can't get it away from her'. I held my hand out she gave to me. I gave it back to him and sorry, she will have to eat bugs at home.

Ok.... I might be a little off topic....but this is my favorite DS story......

I nursed for a long time. Till he was 2. We went through years of infertility and adopted my daughter who I tried to nurse.....it was a flop. So.....I wanted to nurse my son as long as I could....within reason.

When we was 2 he tried to nurse....then that boy looked at me and said.....there's none in there, I want a coke.....then he marched to the frig to try to get one.

My first client..the only one I've termed: Knowing it was on my contract for no outside food, dcm decided to push me and sent dcb 3 in with cheetos and pixy stix. For breakfast...she said he ate cereal at home. I later found out it was froot loops. She always liked to claim that she fed him healthy stuff. Dinner was frequently chicken nuggets or spaghettios.

There have been toddlers come in with pork skins, Cheetos, choc pudding, and earlier this week a toddler came in with a bag of starlight mints and sucking on one at the same time. I promptly removed it from his mouth and the bag from his hands and gave them back to mom. She was mad but who cares.

Steal a dozen of them tomorrow Jr and bring them to your fave Nan.

Nan sends Jr home an empty egg carton and tells Mom that he wanted it and I couldn't take it away from him or he would cry.

A 1.5 yo came in eating a Jolly Rancher, dcm let him eat it in the car! When they got here, she had to pry it out of his mouth and then she had the nerve to tell dcb to ask me if he could have it here..uh, no..He couldn't even talk yet.

Another one is a cake pop, a frosted cake pop. Dcm said that dcb had texture aversion issuss and that's one thing he would eat.

I have only had one child that brought their own food and that didn't last long. He would show up eating a cereal bar or pop tart for breakfast at a year old. I would wait until mom left, throw it away and let him eat whatever hot breakfast we were eating.

Two of the four that I have now have a huge cup of chocolate or strawberry milk every morning right before they get here. And for a while they would bring Little Debbies and tell me that daddy or mommy said that they could have it for breakfast. After me leaving it in the diaper bag a few times they stopped doing that. Last week one of them showed up with a kool-aid jug at 7am and chugged it down before I could get it away from her!

Meals are part of my daily fee and I don't really ever offer the option of them bringing their own. I do allow the kids a cookie or something at times but only for snack and only if they have eaten their meals that day. I serve kool-aid too during the day at times. Every single parent I have ever had has told me to give it to their kids. And we do a lot of ice water during the day.

I would have to say that the very worst thing was a child who came in on her very first day with me carrying a bag of Burger King (mom was a manager) and we had JUST the day before gone over the "no outside food" policy. Girl didn't even eat it but it tipped off a HUGE fuss with some of the other kids who saw it. A few days later the family got angry because I was taking my 1 week maternity leave (they signed up knowing full well that I was nine months pregnant and less than a week until my due date and that I would be closing for a week for leave--stupidest thing ever), pulled the girl, and stiffed me $50.

I too get grumpy when parents bring kids with food, first off if they want to feed them at home OK but when the bring a bag of cereal and a drink I tell the kid to give it to mom or dad, my wife who has the daycare tells the kid to go eat at the table. Then as I cook over a hot stove breakfast then I have to throw theirs away it makes me angry. I tell the kids that there are children in other country's with out food and had one DCK tell me to mail it to them, he was five.
God bless you ladies for what you do

Little off topic, As a foster parent, I had a child that would get the after school bagged meal. (some places do this to make sure kids have dinner) He had just came into care and the agency was bring him and his siblings home from school while they worked on getting busing set up.
Anyways, my dh and I got dinner ready as we were waiting (keeping dinner warm) for the kids to arrive. The worker was late and started to worry me. When the arrive the kids come in with McD bags (which they only ate half of, bc they were so hungry) and drinks (mtn dew). They were complaining that the were hungry, so I stopped and got them something (for the 30 min drive?). I picked up the meal bag from school and let her know that she was played (but not in those words). They had eaten the pudding and crackers out of the bag and tried to throw the rest away (fruit and sandwich).

I have had a kido with pixie sticks.. so sugar and food coloring but yes straight sugar in a bowl takes the cake... pixie sticks are more like convenience food, they had to make the bowl of sugar themselves.

I once had a 7 yr old that came in with a bottle of Mountain Dew every morning for breakfast for his migraines. I do live in Appalachia!

One DCM was more worried about the 2 HOURS it took to do her hair and makeup that she'd run out of time to get them ready and out the door. So when DCB(he was 2) would fight her on getting ready she'd give him suckers, cookies, or candy to bribe him out the door. I told her MULTIPLE times no outside food to which she responded with "I don't want him to fight with me so just take it away once I leave." Seriously?! This dcm also went to mcdonalds EVERY night to get him his chicken nuggets and fries. He refused to eat 95% of the food I served because they never made him try new things. If he wanted a bag of Cheetos for lunch, that's what they gave him. That little boy has so many issues and it will just get worse and worse with the way this mom let's him control their lives. She is also the mom who won't let them play and get dirty. I gave the kids playdoh once and he cried because he didn't want to touch it because mom would never let him do anything sensory or messy.
