When you're in the middle of an interview and the dcm looks at the pictures on the wall and exclaims "I know your husband! He's my cousin!"

I don't like to mix business with personal life...so we'll see if she even wants to enroll her kids since I don't offer after school care (too much hassle for me). Otherwise, I think it should work out as long as we can keep it professional.

Urgh...will have to remember to tell dh the names of potential clients before the interview next time...

She didn't realize it was the same last name before coming to inquire if you knew her cousin???!

Apparently not! I've never met her so it was awkward that we never met at a family event or something.

There are a lot of people with our last name in the area but yeah...kinda funny how she just realized it at the interview.

The same thing happened to my brother in law once. He was doing a roofing job and this other guy he was working with kept looking at him like he was trying to figure out where he knew him from. BIL realized who it was and said, "Hey! You're my uncle!"

I had one just today
A family friend picked up dcg today. Mentioned that she knew three of my former families, dating back over several decades Then said she lived next door to Becky and Mickey. I had to think
Oh My sister and brother-in-law
I was thinking daycare families and it didn't ring a bell

Oh dear. So sorry. I once was interviewing a young mom and within minutes realized she was my brother's girlfriend's sister (they lived in the same house). I finished the interview but did not enroll simply explaining it would be a conflict of interest.

Happened to my brother two weeks ago. He had a tree cut down in his back yard & this young guy kept staring at him. He finally said to my bro, "You look just like my g'pa to the point it's creepy." Turned out his g'pa was our uncle, our mom's brother.

My family didn't keep in touch with my father's side of the family except for his 2 sisters and their children which we only see every few years. He also has 2 step brothers and a step sister and of course a whole slew of cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. that we never even heard of. I was conducting an interview one day a couple of years ago and the man asked me to verify my last name. My last name is the same as his wife's maiden name. After going through the names in the family tree, we realized that she and I were cousins and their son that they hired me to watch was my cousin! I thought it was pretty neat to find long lost family members. However, we didn't really connect and I didn't meet any other family members through them. But it was neat to meet them and watch a cousin I never knew I had. I don't remember why, but he is no longer in my care. It is now just a cool story to tell.

This has happened to me before too. They ended up enrolling and stayed 3 years. It worked out perfectly!
Good Luck!

This one is not daycare related, but years ago, when I moved back to my home town and started my new high school, I was in the bathroom brushing my hair and two other girls and I started talking. Turned out that they were my cousins from my father's side. We didn't stay in touch after that either. But it's another neat little story.

I have two families that I've had in care for a long time. Just last month one of the DCM's happened to run into the other families dad at pick up. Turns out the families are cousins but neither dad did regular drop offs and/or pick ups so no one put two and two together...

I also have two children in care who's mom was my DH's girlfriend in Jr High...

Guess living in a small town has it's oddities..

Around here it seems everyone knows my dh since he was born and raised here.

I was raised in a small town (and by small I mean we had 2 bars side by side and 2 churches side by side and that's it). Not only did everyone know everything about everyone but my dad had a lot of family there. So, when I was in highschool, I had a guy ask me out on a date and while we were chatting, we realized we were distant cousins. Instantly, he was so freaked out that he asked a relative out that he avoided me like the plague. My dad said it was silly since we were very distant cousins but it was enough to scare the guy into never even making eye contact with me again.

I'm getting a good chuckle from all of this at least. Dh was amused that his cousin was interviewed...he hasn't heard much from his mom's side of the family lately...

When I first started, I had a mom come in and look at another daycare kiddo and say, Is her mom E? She's my stepsister. At one point, I had one kid from each of three sisters. It was fun. The only awkward part was when other family members would pick up and would not be speaking to each other. I keep telling them all they should have more kids so I can have job security.

I have a similar situation.
DCM1 is sisters with DCM2
DCM2 is sister in laws with DCM3
DCM4 is really good friends with DCM1

I still have one opening and there is a little talk that DCM 1 and 2 sister in law might also be interested in care.

I love the family and love having all the cousins!

Would that happen to be a WISCONSIN town?

It's definitely a small world - my hubby and I are always discovering that people we know for different reasons are connected somehow.
