Aw, I didn't know that. I love his books too, but avoid that one because it's too sad

I've been a mother for almost 21 years and have read this book countless times. I can not and have not ever made it through this book without crying. I'm teary eyed typing this just thinking of it.
I started tearing up as soon as I read the title of the thread!!
I've tried several times to read the book without crying but have never made it past the first couple of pages.
O.M.Geee..... I read it to my nephew when he was like 2 (he's now almost 23!!). I had never heard of it, and wasn't doing DC then. When it got to the end where the boy has now grown up and is taking care of the mom, I couldn't even speak - I was so choked up!!
I was thinking - how could they do this? How could they write a story that adults are obviously going to be reading
outloud, and make it so gosh-darn SAD??!!?? It just isn't fair!!!!!
